Irish pub near campus offers specials for students ●

By Nicole Bambach C O R R E S P O N D E N T

PJ Dolan’s Irish Pub and Grille at the corner Bearss Avenue and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard offers deals and special events for students throughout the week. Monday is half off all drinks if you work in hospitality, Tuesday is free bingo with a free appetizer and drinks from 8-10 p.m., Wednesday is karaoke from 8-10 p.m., Thursday is a sorority/fraternity social and Friday’s there’s a live band. Danielle Buxbaum, a senior majoring in marketing, has gone to the pub several times for sorority/fraternity socials. “Every Thursday they have socials there,” she said. “My sorority has gone and we enjoy it. They have everything you would expect such as food, dancing and people just hanging out.” Tatiana Morales, a senior majoring in psychology and gender studies, said she goes Thursday nights and enjoys the socials because she can

hang out with friends. “I like going because of how convenient and close the pub is to campus,” she said. Morales also said she enjoys playing with the giant Jenga set there with her sorority sisters. Mondays include industry night and an open mic, which tends to be the pub’s busier night of the week, according to manager Christine Meehan. Tuesday’s have started to pick up since the pub hosts have bingo — winners get prizes such as gift certificates for the pub, free drinks or shots and free appetizers. “Thursday’s we also have good time trivia which is general knowledge and they give out music clues that supplies the answer in it,” Meehan said. “The prizes include first place a $50 gift certificate to the bar as well as second and third place which get $30 and $20.” The usual demographic for the pub includes regulars who range from 20-40 years of age, as well as USF students. They come in mostly for the

karaoke on Wednesday nights, according to Meehan. Mark Birkin, owner of PJ Dolan’s, grew up in Tampa, but did not attend the university. His dad was the chairman of the college of business who actually took over when Bob Anderson became the dean of the college of business at USF Sarasota-Manatee. Birkin’s father worked at the university until he was around the age of 70. Birkin has lived in Tampa for 19 years, he said the city has always been his home, although he did travel to Colorado and Arizona for a while. He decided to open the pub in May 2011. He named it after his Uncle Patty, Patrick John Dolan whose picture can be seen on the front of the menu. He is shown wearing a 4-piece suit outside the building. Birkin’s uncle is from Dublin and has been visiting here for the past five months. Birkin’s grandparents, being from Ireland, were another key factor in calling it an Irish pub.

Tampa Bay Lightning offers students discounted tickets By Josh Fiallo S P O R T S

E D I T O R

For a USF student, finding something to do that fits the trifecta of being entertaining, new and — most importantly — cheap can be a difficult task. With Student Rush from the Tampa Bay Lightning, however, USF students can purchase bestavailable tickets for Lightning home games for as low as $20 in 2017. With the average ticket price for a regular season Lightning game at $80 last season, according to vividseats.com, $20 seats are a steal for students who are fans of the game or just want to try something new. “I’ve only done it (Student Rush) five times but it’s been a great experience every time,” Lindsey Knowlton, a senior majoring in marine biology at USF, said. “I got seats right behind the players bench one time and that was probably one of the best experiences I’ve ever had at a hockey game.” The program, which has been offered since the 2014-2015 season, will increase prices for

sold-out games and throughout the playoffs, but there will always be seats or standing room available in some capacity. This holds true even if the Lightning make it into the Stanley Cup, which the team did in 2015, when Student Rush tickets

were $50. The first step for a student to obtain a discounted ticket is to text “RUSH” to 61873, which will enter the student into the Student Rush Text Club. Then, on game days, students

who are in the text club will receive a text with a keyword that will be used to obtain a wristband, which will later be used to buy the best available ticket at a discounted price right before puck drop. Students may get their wristband

from the McDonald’s Ticket Office at Amalie Arena during regular business hours (9-5) on the day of the game. Wristbands will be given out all day during business hours, opposed to years past when they were only distributed two hours prior to puck drop. If a student cannot make it to the ticket office during office hours, then they can wait in a line in front of the stadium, behind Thunder Alley’s stage, for a wristband. Wristbands will be distributed 30 minutes before game time for high school and college students in Bolts gear and 15 minutes before the game time for all others. Only one ticket is allotted per student and students with no ID will not be issued a wristband. The Lightning, who barely missed the playoffs last season, will begin their season that includes 41 home games on Friday, Oct. 6 against the Florida Panthers at 7:30 p.m. According to the ESPN.com, the Lightning has the third highest chance of winning the Stanley Cup.
