Events to explore during the break By Miki Shine E D I T O R

While for many spring break is about having a good time, there’s an array of festivities going on around Tampa Bay to tap into anybody’s interests. From fundraising for a cause to traveling back in time, there’s plenty of things to look out for and explore.
The Fight for Air Climb The American Lung Association hosts nation events around the country that are geared toward illustrating what it feels like to deal with lung disease by having people climb the stairs of a skyscraper, stadium or other tall building. The Tampa Fight for Air Climb will be held on March 10 at the Bank of America Plaza. The climb can be taken alone or with a group to raise funds for lung disease
research. The local chapter has raised over $106.7 thousand of its $200 thousand goal.
Busch Gardens Food & Wine Festival The Food & Wine Festival runs on weekends until April 29 and focuses on dishes and alcohol from around the world. Additionally, it will feature a list of concerts including the Goo Goo Dolls and The Fray. The food includes plant based, vegetarian and gluten free options. Prices range from $30 to $55 based the number of samplers. This is in addition to the cost of park admission.
Gasparilla Music Festival The Gasparilla Music Festival in downtown Tampa is a continuation of the Gasparilla festivities. The
music festival is March 10-11. General admission for two days is $60 while individually Saturday is $40 and Sunday is $30. This year’s lineup includes The Roots, Nikki Lane and Hard Working Americans.
Bay Area Renaissance Festival The Tampa renaissance Festival, located near the Museum of Science and Industry across the street from campus, is geared toward sending visitors back to the 16th century. Events include armored jousting, concerts and shopping. The festival is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. March 10-11 is Barbarian Brew Fest, which includes an archery competition and March 17-18 is Shamrocks & Shenanigans, which includes Highland Games.

The central location of Tampa affords occupants with endless possibilities for a day of fun. SPECIAL TO THE ORACLE By Jesse Stokes M A N A G I N G
E D I T O R
Having experienced life as a Tampanian for all of my nearly twenty years of life, I have come to know and love the city that I call home for many of reasons. However the primary reason is the accessibility that the crowned jewel of central Florida provides for various adventures and day trips. The following are my five most recommended and easy spring break options for students in the Tampa area, that are just roughly an hour or so away.
5. Airboat rides in
Inverness Inverness, Fl is a small town with an “Old Florida” feel, as veteran Floridians would say. The town, just about an hour north of Tampa, has much to offer for a quiet day trip. With lakes galore, Inverness provides a multitude of fresh water activities including fishing, tubing and the most exciting option, Air Boat riding. What differentiates an Air Boat from other ways of aquatic travel is the giant propeller above water that powers the boat to move, instead of an underwater motor. This provides the excitement of
feeling like you are flying, because with high enough speeds, the boat is actually able to skid across the top of the water, without any part remaining submerged. These vessels are widely used in the Everglades, however taking a tour on one through the lakes of Inverness provide a more accessible for of enjoyment.
4. Dinosaur World Move aside Disney and Legoland! The unsung hero of central Florida theme parks is undoubtedly, Dinosaur World. Located

just off of I-4 headed towards Orlando, this Jurassic adventure welcomes you with life-sized versions of the extinct creatures. Once inside, you will not find your traditional theme park feel. The sound system is not playing upbeat and excited sings, but rather the screeches of Pterodactyls and scream of Triceratops. Inside this local version of “Jurassic Park”, visitors will be afforded the opportunity to excavate their own fossils and learn about the creatures that roamed in the land before time.
3. Parksdale Farm Market With the start of Spring Break, also comes the full takeover of strawberry season. With the Strawberry Festival already in full force bringing in country legends such as, Reba McEntire and Brad Paisley, Parkesdale Farm Market

can easily become overshadowed by the star power that the festival brings. However, one thing that will never be overshadowed is the power of a Parkesdale strawberry milkshake. The traditional, strawberry shortcake and chocolate-dipped strawberries are a nice option as well. But it is the milkshake that will keep you making the drive to State Road 92 for weekends to come.
2. Weeki Watchee Springs Where else in the world will you be able to watch, meet and take pictures with reallife mermaids, other than the historical Weeki Watchee Springs? However, if you plan to make a showtime, you first need to check the weather, because the outdoor venue will close at the earliest sign of a lightning strike and also plan to be there ahead of time, because the 400 seat auditorium will fill up fast.

1. Madeira Beach/John’s Pass Home to the legendary Candy Kitchen and neighbor of the tourists dream, John’s Pass, Madeira beach is a quiet, yet equally lively vacation spot that is a great destination for students who are looking for a quick day trip or week long retreat. With dive bars and dolphin tours galore, “mad Beach”, as the locals call it, provides a plethora of exciting opportunities for those who visit. Accompanied by John’s Pass within walking distance, the options for shopping and eating local are endless. The clean white sand of the beach makes for a comfortable spot to lounge, and with the Gulf of Mexico only a few yards away, Madeira provides an experience unlike no other, “day at the beach.”
