Once a year the City of Tampa dyes the Hillsborough River that runs by downtown green to celebrate the Irish holiday. SPECIAL TO THE ORACLE

Students can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day all over Tampa Bay. Whether you prefer celebrating during the day with friends and family or drinking the night away in an Irish bar, Tampa offers unique and affordable options for merrymaking. River O’Green The celebrations begin Friday morning at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park with the Mayor’s River O’Green fest. At 11 a.m. the Hillsborough River will be dyed a bright green to celebrate one of the city’s favorite holidays. The festival will last until 4 p.m. will live music, games, local restaurants creating their favorite irish foods and, of course, an abundance of beer. Anyone who brings three nonperishable food items for the Salvation Army food drive will be given a green “St. Patrick’s Army”
t-shirt. Admission is free and attendees are encouraged to bring their four legged friends as well. In the Bay A Clearwater gem, O’Keefe’s, is hosting a two day St. Patty’s Day event. The festivities begin at the Irish Eve pre-party on March 16 at 4 p.m. There is free parking, no cover, and live music ranging from the Irish Buskers to bagpipers and an Irish dance show. Irish puffs, Chicago Beef Dipped sandwiches and a seven course Irish dinner can all be consumed at the establishment along with other traditional Irish meals. The tent re-opens on St. Patty’s Day at noon with a $5 cover after 3 p.m. Parking remains free and a shuttle is offered after 4 p.m. There will be a variety of live music as well as arts and craft vendors, face painting and beer tasting on top of the multiple drink specials designed for the big day.
The Salty Shamrock in Apollo Beach is also having a two-day celebration. The party begins on St. Patrick’s Day with a $5 cover after 3 p.m. Live entertainment begins at 11 a.m. and goes until “the wee hours.” Music like the Irish Ramblers and bagpipers will be offered along with drink specials and traditional irish food like shamrock fries, cottage pies and a rustic reuben. The party continues the next day for its “National Hangover Day” celebration. Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s will be 2-for-1 from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. and a live band will play at 6 p.m. By campus Two prominent Irish pubs can be found near USF. Both are within a mile of campus, though they each offer a unique atmosphere for guests. Paddywagon Irish Pub is found on University Square Drive. While the establishment does not offer food, it does give a variety of drink deals and offers a discount to customers who
utilize an Uber to get to and from the establishment. Uber Eats can easily drop off some burgers while you play corn hole in the parking lot. Customers can spend the day with great cocktails and beers, a pool table, a karaoke machine and the legendary Terminator arcade game. PJ Dolan’s Irish Pub and Grille, located on Bearss Avenue, is a traditional, laid back pub. The beer, ciders and full liquor bar are each showcased with the daily drink specials and the kitchen whips up some of the best Irish food in town. The Jameson burger is legendary, as is its fish and chips and bangers and mash. Giant Jenga, live music, pool, trivia and open mic nights make this dimly lit pub a perfect escape destination. Two countdown clocks to St. Patrick’s Day are found by the bar and the pub will be filled with a sea of patrons donning green and a few brave souls in kilts to celebrate the day.

Many long for the chance to get away from campus over bpring break, but travel can be hard on a college student’s budget. Luckily, there’s plenty of under-explored treasures within Florida that are easy to take a day trip to.
Wolf’s Museum of Mystery
Naples Zoo
Distance from campus: 189 miles
Distance from campus: 170 miles
Housed in the heart of old St. Augustine, Wolf’s Museum of Mystery is reminiscent of a time when people embraced freak shows. The museum, which doubles as a shop with most items available for purchase, features bizarre sculptures made by local artists, original circus banners and performances by a local “mermaid.” The $5 admission to the museum also goes toward any item if you choose to make a purchase. At a three hour drive from campus, it’s a must-go spot for anyone interested in visiting somewhere a little strange.
Looking for something more adventurous? Just two and a half hours away is the Naples Zoo. The Zoo features a series of paths that takes you past animal habitats. The Zoo includes classic animals like lions, giraffes and pythons along with rarer animals such as fosas of Madagascar. It doesn’t receive funding from the city, county or state, which means it functions completely through admissions. Admission costs $23 that goes toward supporting the wildlife.
Webb’s Antique Mall Lake City Distance from campus: 152 miles
Ulumay Wildlife Sanctuary on Merritt Island
For those interested in shopping, a jaunty two-hour drive will get you right to Webb’s Antique Mall in Lake City. The large flea-market style shopping center features over 300 venders. The store opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. It’s impossible to know what you’ll find there and every corner could hold an unexpected treasure.
NAPLES ZOO
Distance from campus: 125 miles The space coast is full of places to visit, but one of the less well-known locations is the Ulumay Wildlife Sanctuary. A two-hour drive allows you to spend time among the natural wildlife the Sanctuary offers. Additionally, there’s canoeing, fishing and trails both in the water and on land. The area used to be a village of the Ais native Americans who disappeared around 1720. If you’re interested in something a little more longterm, the Sanctuary also offers campgrounds.

Floridians are lucky as they live in a state that is considered by all Americans to have perfect beach weather during the entire year. Students who want to save money don’t have to leave the Bay area for spring break, but this doesn’t mean that they have to give up that spring break feeling. The shore is never too far away. Here are some local eateries that won’t let people stray too far from coast if they want to grab a bite. Beach Bar This tiki-style eatery features three bars and patrons can book a cabana for their evening

of fun. A menu favorite is the donut burger, which features two beignet style buns with a caramel sauce and bits of applewood smoked bacon. Whiskey Joe’s Bar and Grill
One of two locations in Florida, Whiskey Joe’s Tampa makes every visit feel like summer. Patrons are invited to get a drink and bury their toes in the sand. Whiskey Joe’s flaunts an extensive menu, with selections including coconutrum chicken, strawberry guava ribs and Joe’s gator bowl salad. Students who decide to give Whiskey Joe’s a try over spring break can also gear themselves

up for entertainment, as it is slated to have live music every night from March 13 to 20. The Sail Pavilion More of a bar and hangout spot than a full restaurant, The Sail Pavilion in downtown Tampa is a must-visit spot. While it’s not on a beach, its location on the Riverwalk still allows people a beautiful view as they eat. The Sail’s menu consists of appetizers, like calamari and Cuban nachos, salads, sandwiches and even a kid’s menu. It was voted as the 2016 Readers’ Choice most dogfriendly restaurant in the U.S. in a poll ran by USA Today. They offer ice cream and complimentary water bowls and treats for man’s best friend.
The Brown Boxer Pub and Grille Named after a dog named Hoot, The Brown Boxer in Clearwater Beach has a lot to offer patrons. There is live music every night, daily drink and lunch specials, pet-friendly dining seating and four locations, three in Clearwater and one in Madeira Beach. The eatery boasts unique items such as its Blarney Stone sliced ribs (sliced ribs with a Guinness glaze), South Philly Quesadilla (a cheesesteak inside a quesadilla) and mango habanero Mahi. Students should make sure not to skip dessert, as Key lime pie, a Floridian favorite, and alcoholinfused hard moose are both on the menu, but one must be of legal drinking age to order the latter. Like most bars, The Brown Boxer closes at 3 a.m., but
the kitchen closes an hour earlier, so students planning on checking out this restaurant should plan accordingly. Sea Critters Cafe
For the students that choose to spend spring break in St. Petersburg this year, Sea Critters Cafe is a possible option if they’re fans of seafood. It’s right on the water as well, and known for being a great spot to watch catfish. Crab cakes, lobster pasta and scallops are some of the cafe’s most popular menu items, as the establishment’s proximity to the water allows for only the freshest ingredients. Sea Critters Cafe also provides free Wi-Fi, so students can get started on that extra spring break homework with a view slightly better than the one from the library’s third floor windows.
