THINK OUT OF THE BOX INTO THE PATH OF FREEDOM

2015 http://ushaprabhakar.com

THINKING OUT OF THE BOX generally implies being creative in making something that is other than that which is already accepted as the norm. Thinking out of the box makes room for possibilities of creating the impossible. Our mind also gets habituated to patterns of thinking. With keen observation if we utilize the mind in the process of discrimation, analysis and synthesis, we can sharpen the intellect like a sharp knife and realize the subtleties of the truth. Our human lives also seem full of limitations and impossibilities. Thinking out of the box gives us a glimpse of our true nature of immortality, love, joy and really our expansive nature and ‘oneness’. It may seem like an intelligent exercise in the beginning but when we are able to assimilate the uth and experience it, then we have definitely found our freedom.

INTRODUCTION In this remarkable E-Book, Usha Prabhakar records her journey to Self Realization compiled from blogs she wrote over many years. Usha Prabhakar, has had the great advantage being of easternly decent in that she was exposed to the teachings and literature of the great sages of India; which we in the western hemisphere try hard to understand, she brings us closer to understanding the essence of the great mystics and sages of her home land. It is a great read and provides a subtle and remarkable description of her personal journey touching the fringes of Cosmic Consciousness. I’m sure it will uplift the reader another step up the ladder to Self Realization and Universal Consciousness. Peter Graham MS,D. (Doctors Degree in Metaphysics)

THINK OUT OF THE BOX

Hoping to open up to greater states of Consciousness

PRAYER I ask not for Divine Providence for more riches but more wisdom with which to accept and use wisely the riches I received at birth in the form of the power to control and direct my mind to whatever I desire. I find the internet a fascinating world where I have made some interesting friends from different states and countries. It is also a place where I am always learning some thing or the other that is new. As a result my life has become very exciting and I am always thinking out of the box. Have you ever tried thinking out of the box? What exactly does it mean to think out of the box? To think of ideas that have never been thought before is thinking out of the box. I admire all those people who are trying to do internet and network marketing for example. When you step into any kind of sales I think you have stepped out of the regular run of the mill jobs and separated yourself from the herd mentality. For they set their own path. As I was thinking earlier today I now have tremendous respect for all sales people. In this book I have simply compiled some of the articles from my blog that I have collected over the past 3 years. These are just my inner conversations that I penned down in my blog which I am sharing in this ebook. So there is no continuity in the subject matter but there is an emphasis on Consciousness and Energy which I refer to as Self.

I can think of many ways that we live inside a box. Essentially a box is a set of our limitations that we live by. We confine our actions to the limitations of our cultural beliefs; our beliefs about our capabilities and possibilities set by our mind. Living in the confines of those beliefs, we restrict our intellect from rising to the infinite possibilities that we can explore. Once we break the barriers of those belief systems we can find our freedom not only from thinking of the impossible but we can also free ourselves from the limitations of the body, mind and intellect and realize our true essence which is infinite joy and bliss. Once you taste that, you will never forget it and you will want that freedom more permanently. We are made up of body, mind, intellect and spirit. The first 3 are only tools or instruments of the spirit and have their limitations but the spirit is limitless, unbounded and free. Such a spirit being free, limitless without boundaries can only be one as there is no scope for there being two. This is what is referred to as the Universal Soul, Paramatman in Sanskrit or Universal Consciousness and the spirit that identifies itself with a body, mind and intellect is the individual soul, Atman in Sanskrit or the individual Consciousness. Those who have realized this truth and experienced their freedom become ‘Master Servants’ because their purpose of life becomes to serve others who they see as their reflections.

Study of the Self is the Most Important The job of servicing others, of course, does not earn any interest or salary. But we have the honor to serve the sentient beings. The job itself means: The highest reward and honor

Every aspect of a Tree gives benefit to Others

Paro-pakaraya Phalanti Vrksa: Paro-pakaraya Vahanti Nadya: Paro-pakaraya Duhanti Gava: Paro-pakara-rtha-midam Sariram It is only to benefit others that trees bear fruits It is only for helping others that rivers flow It is only to benefit others that cows yield milk. It is only for helping others that you are given a body.

A Yogasana that strengthens the body and mind

Yoga helps us strengthen our body and mind in many different ways. While it helps us develop a strong physical body it also gives the mental attributes of courage, fortitude, patience, Flexibility and Concentration to name just a few. These are like the roots of a tree and the fruits that this tree yields are the achievements of success in our lives. While we lead a life of abundance and purposeful life, we become a source of inspiration to others and contribute to the benefit of others in many different ways.

Our scriptures state that the most important study in life is the study of the Self! The Universal Law of Use states that when you don’t use it, you lose it! So what is this Self? This Self refers to the “I” that we all identify ourselves with and therefore, it is the common factor. That “I” is also referred to as Consciousness. There is only one Consciousness and not multiple Consciousnesses. This Consciousness has no form and no Name. It is formless, nameless, attribute less, infinite, unbound and stainless. While we are all this one and the same Consciousness that we refer to as the Self, we are http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 8

all manifested as the embodied human beings in different forms with different names and attributes experiencing life in our own unique way. While it is difficult to understand this higher, intangible Truth, it is possible to understand it by starting with the known and tangible human body and the world we experience in our daily life.

There is a famous quote in Sanskrit, “Sharira madhyam khalu sadhanam! This body is only an instrument or medium to attain Self Realizaton In the Upanishads it has been stated that the body and mind are only tools we use in this process or sadhana, like a carpenter uses his tools to carve out various forms of wooden articles. If those tools are not used properly and frequently, they become rusted, dull and useless. They have to be maintained in good quality to give us good service. So it is with our body and mind. When maintained well they give us better mileage and service for a better quality and meaningful life. Life is only an experience and how we interpret it or what meaning we give to it is dependent entirely on us. Thus we are spiritual beings experiencing life thru our body and mind. I was always interested in the why and how of things happening in life. In 1983 I had a very dramatic and transformational spiritual experience. I became hungry to understand my spiritual experience and desired to delve into it more deeply for a better understanding of life. Consequently light started shining brightly on different aspects of life as my spiritual journey continued. We all can stay happy and healthy only when we engage in useful activities. Like everyone else I had a 9-5 job that kept me busy. But I was really not happy doing what I was doing as it did not feed my spiritual thirst. Finally, someone introduced me to Network Marketing and Internet Marketing which opened up the opportunity for me to work from home. It all began with someone showing me some health products for my health issues. I was diagnosed with Diabetes and started buying the health products that gave me energy and nutrition. http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 9

It was then that I decided I wanted to share those good things of life that helped me and that would empower the body, mind and spirit of those I shared it with. As I started exploring for products that would help me physically, mentally and spiritually, I decided to journal my reflections and findings on my blog.

According to the Indian Scriptures this body is made up of five sheaths. 1. Annamaya Kosha – Food Sheath 2. Pranamaya Kosha – Vital Air Sheath 3. Manomaya Kosha – Mind Sheath 4. Vijnanamaya Kosha – Intellectual Sheath 5. Anandamaya Kosha – Bliss Sheath Annamaya Kosha and Pranamaya Kosha involve the physical body. Manomaya Kosha and Vijnanamaya Kosha pertain to the mental body and Anandamaya kosha addresses our spiritual essence. Having analyzed the human body to its most rudimentary level, the sages of old recommended a life style that was most conducive to all these koshas. However, due to the advances in Technology and ou modern thinking we have adopted a very complicated life style that is not really healthy neither for our body nor our mind. Having been exposed to the possibilities of scientific technology, it is difficult to go back to the olden life style. However, not all the http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 10

changes are bad. In fact, there are many good things that we have discovered that are empowering. It is my humble attempt to share the good things of life that have helped me with the hope that the information will empower the body, mind and spirit of those who need it. Please visit my blog frequently and if you have any questions or comments feel free to leave a comment.

LIFE IS A GAME

Life is a Game!

Recently I took part in a research study as a volunteer, which involved playing video games. The purpose of the research was to study the effect playing video games has on the brain of elderly people who might be going thru dementia, and to see if playing video games, delays dementia. I participated in the research, because I thought it would be fun to play the video games. I was amazed to see that it was not only sharpening my perceptions but also my strategic skills. The name of the video game was 'The Rise of Nations'. The game involved creating a nation, building Commerce, military, wonders and defending the city from attack or attacking the neighboring city to expand your empire. Just as I was reflecting on this experience of mine, I started feeling even more so, that life is a game, because whether it is on a micro cosmic level or macrocosmic level, or on an internal level or on an external level, the mind uses certain strategic skills, and just as the body needs exercise on the physical level, the mind needs exercise on the mental level to keep fit. http://ushaprabhakar.com

Ocean and Waves

It was mentioned in one of the Upanishads I was listening to, that the body and mind, are to the soul, like tools of a carpenter. You can create anything with the instruments of the body and mind. So, if they are the tools then what is the nature of the identity that uses these tools? That is the crux of the spiritual enquiry. When you start analyzing, the world and life, you come to a point where you start negating everything and when you do that, what remains after negating everything that belongs to the soul but is not the soul, then what remains is the true identity of the soul. There comes a point, that when you keep negating everything, you come to that core essence of oneself the I. This 'I' is nothing but pure Consciousness. A Consciousness that is aware of its own existence. And that in my opinion is the climax and the realization of the SElf. That is called Self-Realization. And this is an amazing experience because one comes to realize that the Self is everything and it requires no other material than its own Self to create everything. And the tools I talked about earlier are created by the Self. So, in essence it is like the ocean that brings up the waves that look different from the ocean but ultimately they all merge into the ocean. The water in the wave and the ocean is one and the same but when you see the waves dancing on the ocean you think they are separate.

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 12

so it is with the tools of the Self like the body and mind. When they dissolve, they merge back into the Self. AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING! Consciousness is the creator and the substance with which it creates! Life is a game. It appears like there is both creation and destruction but in reality nothing is created nor destroyed. Everything is Consciousness. It is all a play of Consciousness like the dance of the ocean. THE GROWTH OF A PERSONALITY SHOULD BE CAREFULLY NOURISHED AND CULTIVATED JUST LIKE A SMALL PLANT

Well, we are all raised with a decent amount of teachings on our moral obligations and good manners and general guidelines of correct living based on whatever religion we belong to. I personally think true personal growth begins only when we are faced with some personal problem we are trying to overcome and start questioning the why and how of life, or we are trying to make some kind of a meaning of the life we have. In other words, we have to think deeply and not superficially.

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 13

My own journey began when I started looking for a meaning for my own existence – the purpose of my life. What are my interests in life? What do I want to achieve? I really had no interest nor goal. I reached a point where I said to myself, “enough is enough! I don’t know the purpose of my existence. Then why bother to live?” A certain amount of detachment developed in my mind and I started thinking of existence on a global level and got involved in International politics and started wondering why even nations get into wars. It was at such a time that I had a wonderful experience when I realized I was an immortal soul and not this body. The body may die but the soul continues to live with or without it. This was the turning point in my life. It was just a realization and that is all it will ever be. This proof is not a tangible proof but only subjective evidence that is sufficient enough for the individual who experiences it. This is what SELF-REALIZATION is! Just a realization of the immortal souls that we are! The I AM! It was at this point that my own schooling of personal development began and still continues. This schooling is not restricted to any particular religion or philosophy but is a liberal study of all religions and philosophies which is very exciting because it brings out the common factor in all of them. Ofcourse there are differences in them too but the skill lies in focusing on the unifying commonality in them; in synthesizing the common into a beautiful and practical philosophy and living a harmonious life with a sense of oneness. The superior man perseveres long in his course, adapts to the times, but remains firm in his direction and correct in his goals."

Page 14

Words Matter Self development involves taking responsibility for one's life in a conscious manner. On the recommendation of my mentor Janet legere, I found a very interesting personal development site that is interactive. Actually self development is an eternal 'work in progress', I think. I took some courses in 2010 on the internet given by Bob Proctor thru 'six minutes to success' and Vic Johnson's 'As A Man Thinketh'. It helped me to improve my self confidence and self esteem and develop a very enthusiastic and positive attitude. The courses were very expensive and so I terminated my membership in those two programs in 2011. However, with time I found that I was falling back into my old pattern of thinking. So when Janet Legere suggested tools to life, I enrolled in it two days ago. Not only is the program unique in its interactive nature and daily bites of lessons on self improvement and life coping skills, it is also a FREE program for the time being. So take advantage of it and try it out. The first thing I have learned so far is taking control by developing a positive attitude. Taking that attitude spreads that control into all areas of our lives. The first days excercise was to wake up saying 'I am having a great day!' Bad things do happen but why is the day great? A famous quote from I ching, states that the event is not important but the response to the event is important. We can always respond to the event in such a way as to make the day better regardless of the event. This simple morning routine makes a tremendous impact on our attitude in our lives. I am currently writing this while in India and it reminds me of my childhood days. Life starts pretty early here with people coming to your door early in the morning and ringing the bell. We keep our doors and windows open most of the day and as a result dust accumulates in the house pretty fast and it needs to be cleaned every single day. So the maid comes early in the morning and rings the bell so she can complete her job of cleaning the house and move on to the next house. Next comes the garbage man who picks up the garbage every day. Then comes the milk man to deliver milk at your doorstep. So you see you cannot over sleep even if you wanted to. But as a child with not much responsibilities, I remember having a hard time to wake up early and all the http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 15

surrounding noises from these visitors would make it difficult to continue to sleep. I would still postpone my waking up as long as I could. Doing so would make me feel very lazy and unfocused on the chores of the day for the rest of the day. So what I am trying to say is that in tools to life what is being emphasized is that it is important to start the day with the right attitude so you have a productive day. We can choose our attitude by using the right words and focusing on the positive aspects of our lives. Words we speak are definitely powerful and have an impact not only on others but on ourselves too. In tools to life you will find exercises to develop a practical philosophy. So go ahead and check it out.

THE HIGHEST FORM OF LOVE

Last night I was invited to my daughter's friend’s house for a birthday party. I love to go to parties. I like the energy there. Everybody looks happy and the person whose birthday it is, gets a lot of positive attention. PURE UNCONDITONAL LOVE Well I saw a couple there who were doting on their six month old baby and naturally every one else was also praising the baby and showering him with lots of compliments and love. He was handsome and alert and playful. It was a nice scene. Suddenly, I noticed that as the mother and father were sitting together on the floor playing with their son entertaining him and their guests, there was THAT PURE UNCONDITIONAL LOVE in their EYES as they looked at their son. There is no love on this earth like that of a mother or father toward their child. It was so pure and unconditional. The child looks

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 16

so innocent while bathing in that pure and unconditional love. The mother and father radiate that love so naturally without making any effort. What is so special about this love of the parent, mother or father, toward their child? When they look at their child this love flows so naturally. It is because they identify the child as 'my' child. When you analyze this on a more subtle level, it is this 'my' factor that gives them joy. We all love for the sake of the self. It is a reflection of our selves. I love my mother, father, husband, wife, daughter, son or friend, brother or sister - no matter what relationship- because first and fore most thing is that it is the 'I' that gets the joy of loving them. Everything starts with the "I". Love starts with the love of the self first. When you connect with yourself, then you connect with everyone else. THAT ONE CONSCIOUSNESS IS IN EVERYBODY When you understand yourself as the one Consciousness that is in everybody, you naturally start loving every body because you see them as a reflection of yourself, a reflection of your Consciousness. However, we are all not so in tune with ourselves and not all the time. Mystics on the other hand, have experienced the joy of that 'pure Consciousness' and that is why they radiate that unconditional love toward a sinner and meritorious person alike, because they recognize that true essence of every living creature and resonate with it. This kind of love is the highest form of love and of a high frequency that radiates far and wide in the universe. Everything in the universe is energy and that energy is either potential or kinetic energy manifest or un-manifest. The kinetic energy is measured in frequency. Everything vibrates at a certain frequency. The frequency of that state of unconditional love vibrates at a very high frequency which can attract thousands of people. That is why you find that 'elevated soul's' attract thousands of souls who can bathe in that unconditional love. It is a boon to be present in the mere presence of such souls for they are very rarely found.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT LEADS TO YOUR FREEDOM

It is interesting to note that true desire to change begins only when we want to change our current situation. As long as we are happy with the way things are going, we won't even think of changing our situation or ourselves. It is only when we want to change something about our external situation that we tread the path of personal development. Truly speaking personal development occurs on the different levels of our body, mind, intellect and spirit. So we really need to orchestrate the changes on these levels simultaneously because on the whole we are made up of all these aspects of our being. This can be quite overwhelming and requires tremendous amount of discipline and will power. We human beings are really creatures of habit in terms of both body and mind. When I repeatedly do things in a certain way, after a while I do it without even thinking. For instance, if I walked to the station every day on a certain path and suddenly one day if I had to detour to pick up something a little out of my usual way, I easily forget that I have to detour and realize it only later that I had been walking mechanically the same path I always did even that day totally forgetting that I had to detour. Being a little inattentive I have forgotten my goal. I soon realized that even my thinking pattern was set out of my habitual thinking.

The only way we can pull ourselves out of this rut of a mechanical way of living is to learn new things all the time and engage in creative ideas. http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 18

While Personal development brings about change in us, it is spirituality that brings about a transformation in us; a sort of overhaul of personality to something better than before. This transformation happens like that of a caterpillar turning into a beautiful butterfly as it is released from its chrysalis. It happens in its own schedule. First comes the desire for change through personal development and then comes the quest for something more substantial and meaningful leading to spirituality. The path of personal development is called ‘sadhana’ in Sanskrit and the transformation that is liberating is called, ‘moksha’ in Sanskrit – finding the wings to freedom, just like the caterpillar that flies away after transforming into a beautiful butterfly .

PRACTICE POSITIVE THINKING

Everything in life we do becomes a habit, knowingly or unknowingly. Therefore, it is no surprise that even the way we think becomes a habit. There was a time when I used to say “I don’t like to be ritualistic”. Ritual actually http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 19

means an “observance of set forms in public worship. First of all, if you observe Nature, there seems to be an order and system in life. However, compared to other living forms, as human beings of the highest order of living forms, we are endowed with an intelligence that gives us a FREEDOM OF CHOICE to live our lives in a divine way. It requires us to think positively to live a divine life which means making a conscious choice. Once we have determined our choice it still requires a lot of practice to make it a habit. Forgiveness is an important virtue to inculcate in our self development. As I was listening carefully to Louise L. Hay on the topic of Forgiveness I was so impressed I decided to share it verbatim here in my blog. I had to write down the affirmations on Forgiveness she suggests 24:24 mins into the audio book. Louise L.Hay - I Can Do It - The Power of Thoughts and Affirmations Louise Hay [Full Audiobook]

The concept of forgiveness looked so practical in terms of living a joyous fulfilling life. Keeping a positive mind is like having a pure mind where the thoughts are flowing freely in all serenity and purity. Thoughts are energy and a mind that is polluted with negativity prevents the flow of that energy and gets us stuck in our thinking creatively and makes us stagnant. You can create your own list of affirmations that you could practice on forgiveness but I liked the ones Louise L. Hay said that I decided to share it here on my blog. So here is the transcript of what she said in her audio book on Forgiveness:

FORGIVENESS You can never be free of bitterness as long as you hold unforgiving thoughts. How can you be happy in this moment if you continue to choose to think angry and resentful thoughts? Thoughts of bitterness cannot create JOY, no matter how justified you feel you are, no matter what they did, if you insist on holding on to the past, then you will never be free. Forgiveness of yourself and of others will release you from the prison of the past. When you feel that you are stuck in some situation, or when your http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 20

affirmations are not working, it usually means there is some more forgiving to be done. When you do not flow freely with life in the present moment it usually means you are holding on to a past moment. It can be regret, sadness, hurt, fear, guilt, blame , anger, resentment and sometimes a desire for revenge. Each one of these states comes from a space of unforgiveness, a refusal to let go and to come into the present moment. ONLY IN THE PRESENT MOMENT CAN YOU CREATE YOUR FUTURE If you are holding on to the past, you cannot BE IN THE PRESENT. It is only in this NOW MOMENT that your thoughts and words are POWERFUL, so you really don’t want to waste your current thoughts to continue to create your FUTURE from the garbage of the past. When you blame another, you give your own power away because you are placing the responsibility for your feelings on someone else. People in our lives behave in ways that trigger uncomfortable responses in us. However, they did not get into our minds to create the buttons that have been pushed. Taking responsibility for our own feelings and reactions is mastering our ability to respond. In other words we learn to consciously choose rather than to simply react. Forgiveness is usually a tricky and confusing concept for many people.

There is a difference between forgiveness and acceptance. Forgiveness does not mean that you condone their behavior and the act of forgiveness really takes place in your own mind. The reality of the act of forgiveness has nothing to do with the other person. It has to do with setting ourselves free from holding on to the pain. It is simply an act of releasing yourself from the negative energy. Forgiveness also does not mean allowing the painful actions and hurtful behaviors from the other person to continue in your life. Sometimes forgiveness means “letting go”.

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 21

You forgive them and release them. Taking a stand and setting a healthy boundary is often the most loving thing you can do not only for yourself but for the other person as well. You only live in the “NOW and you can choose to think thoughts that make you feel good RIGHT NOW. You can choose to practice to thinking thoughts that create a positive today and a positive tomorrow. KNOW You are creating positive thinking habits that will serve you well FOREVER. POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS FOR ACHIEVING FORGIVENESS

Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other. As I was reading this bullet point in Dalai Lama’s 18 rules of Life, I couldn’t help think about the difference between ‘your love for each other and the love that exceeds your need for each other’. Contemplating on this point brings into focus that True love begins with the discovery of self love. Love of self almost implies selfishness but really we are not talking about our love for our self identity or the ego self. When we identify our existence as an entity with a form, name and situation then we are constantly looking for validation from others. True Self Love begins with the realization that my true existence is not dependent on anything external to me, because I AM EXISTENCE itself. On exploring this Self through the path of enquiry as to who I AM, we can realize that we are Consciousness & Energy full of knowledge, love and joy. The very fact that you exist makes you loveable. Love is your birthright and the fountain of love is within you. You need not go beg anybody for love. You don’t have to feel the need for love from some one. So what is this ‘need for each other’? It is a love based on ‘conditional love’. I love you because you make me happy, you make me smile, you buy me gifts, etc. etc. That is a “need based love” to put it very simply. Love that is unconditional is non dependent; it just is – it is a feeling of contentment that comes from loving who you are.

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 24

Essentially we humans are social beings. We like drama, and are born to realize our dreams. But only those who are tired of the drama and the never ending dreams that are waiting to be realized, can embark on the path of enquiry. That identification with your true Self through Cosmic Consciousness gives you the real freedom to love yourself for who you are and love others as well for who they are.

I AM A RADIANT BEING OF LOVE

At the core of my heart I am like the Sun radiating with love and knowledge. Knowing this and meditating on it helps us connect with our inner resource to these 2 attributes that are absolutely essential for us to be in the light, for the sun has no partiality and shines on everybody that opens their window to its rays, and we are in infinite supply. It is inexhaustible! We hold that fountain of love and knowledge as that is what we are!! Yet God speaks to us through any means possible to be heard by us even if it has to be through dreams or through other people. Our effort only lies in tuning in to our inner Self and to do so I feel inspired by Og Mandino’s scrolls on love which is worth reading every day. “I WILL GREET THIS DAY WITH LOVE IN MY HEART” https://youtu.be/AU-3lCRcOm0 http://ushaprabhakar.com

INDIFFERENCE AND NEGLIGENCE DOES THE GREATEST HARM

I have been thinking of Masaru Emoto’s Water Document and experiment very deeply ever since I saw it a few weeks ago. In this experiment Masuro experimented with Rice grains in 3 different beakers. He spoke to the rice grains in the first beaker saying “Thank you.” To the rice in the 2nd beaker he said, “You are an idiot”’ and he completely ignored the rice in the 3rd beaker. The results he found was that after a month the rice in the first beaker fermented well giving off a strong pleasant aroma, the rice in the 2nd beaker turned black and the rice in the 3rd beaker that was ignored began to rot. Dr. Emoto that this experiment gives important lesson in life especially regards to how we treat children. We should take care of them and give them attention and converse with them. Indifference does the greatest harm. http://ushaprabhakar.com

The dictionary defines the word indifference as 1. lack of interest or concern as in ‘We were shocked by their indifference toward poverty.’ 2. unimportance; little or no concern as in ‘Whether or not to attend the party is a matter of indifference to him.’ Negligence is defined as – Law. the failure to exercise that degree of care that, in the circumstances, the law requires for the protection of other persons or those interests of other persons that may be injuriously affected by the want of such care. Lack of attention and concern does the greatest harm especially in case of children and we should pay attention to them and converse with them. I remember when my daughter was first born, her grand parents lived with us to help out. When her grand father would enter her room, he would first greet her, even though she was only a new born of 3 months old. Her face would immediately light up. Her grandmother commented that even though she was a tiny baby she would feel neglected if she was not greeted when they came into her presence. I can never forget that comment for some reason. It didn’t matter how small or big she was, children need attention. Attention is something we continue to desire even as adults. It is something that validates our existence, I guess. Many a relationships have been under stress or broken due to the lack of attention or concern by one party or the other in the relationship.

My Power Comes Through The Use Of My Mind

What We See In Our World Is A Mirror Of What We Have In Our Minds. MY POWER COMES THRU THE USE OF MY MIND I am Pure Consciousness! I can use this Consciousness in any way I desire. Page 29

Last year I attended a workshop on “Heal Your Life” based on the teachings of Louise L. Hay. The teachings resonated very well for me because I am all for love. For a long time I thought loving others was more important but when I had my spiritual experience the first thing I realized was that we treat others the way we treat ourselves. If we are too critical of ourselves we will be too critical of others as well. Perhaps in trying to efface my ego I was giving more importance to others and was never kind to myself. It was only when I felt that oneness with the Universal Consciousness I felt the unconditional love for all beings in whom the same Consciousness radiated. In Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, there is an interesting and famous conversation between the wise sage Yajnavalkya and his wife Maitreyi where in Maitreyi asks him if she can get immortality through wealth. He says no and then she asks, “what is the use of wealth, if it does not give me immortality? What is this love for wealth for?” And then Yajnavalkya says, “Nobody loves anything for its own sake. All love is for the love of the Self, in the pure spiritual sense.” We love other things and others because it gives us pleasure and therefore, we love ourselves more than anything else. And we are nothing but a part of that Universal Consciousness that is like a sea of Consciousness. So I do believe that everything starts with the love of Self and it is healing.

What kind of Fruit Are You? Great Lessons In Life

There are many great Lessons in Life that you can Learn from James Allen’s book, As A Man Thinketh. He says, “Men do not attract that which they want, but that which they are. Their whims, fancies, and ambitions are thwarted at every step but their inmost thoughts and desires are fed with their own food, be it foul or clean. Man is manacled only by himself; thought and action are the jailors of Fate – they imprison, being base; they are also the angels of Freedom – they liberate, being noble.” There are many great lessons in life we learn as we ripen to an old age. What kind of a fruit are you? Are you a sweet one or a sour one? If you are a sweet one, no matter what pressures you may have you would only react in a positive way. If you are a sour fruit, then You would react in a sour and negative way. Being in touch with our emotions and having control over them thru Self Mastery gives great joy and happiness in the long run. It also speaks of our healthy Emotional Quotient, EQ, when we take responsibility for our lives. It brings harmony and peace at the individual level and eventually at the universal level when those vibrations spread. Thus we can create a beautiful world – a heaven on Earth! As I read the following message in my email, the above quote from James Allen’s “As A Man Thinketh” came to my mind. http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 31

“‘If I were to squeeze this orange as hard as I could, what would come out?’ I asked him. He looked at me like I was a little crazy and said, ‘Juice, of course.’ ‘Do you think apple juice could come out of it?’ ‘No!’ he laughed. ‘What about grapefruit juice?’ ‘No!’ ‘What would come out of it?’ ‘Orange juice, of course.’ ‘Why? Why when you squeeze an orange does orange juice come out?’ He may have been getting a little exasperated with me at this point. ‘Well, it’s an orange and that’s what’s inside.” I nodded. ‘Let’s assume that this orange isn’t an orange, but it’s you. And someone squeezes you, puts pressure on you, says something you don’t like, offends you. And out of you comes anger, hatred, bitterness, fear. Why? The answer, as our young friend has told us, is because that’s what’s inside.’ It’s one of the great lessons of life. What comes out when life squeezes you? When someone hurts or offends you? If anger, pain and fear come out of you, it’s because that’s what’s inside. It doesn’t matter who does the squeezing: your mother, your brother, your children, your boss, the government. If someone says something about you that you don’t like, what comes out of you is what’s inside. And what’s inside is up to you, it’s your choice. When someone puts the pressure on you and out of you comes anything other than love, it’s because that’s what you’ve allowed to be inside. Once you take

away all those negative things you don’t want in your life and replace them with love, you’ll find yourself living a highly functioning life. How we react to different situations in life depends on the great lessons in life. A cultured soul is one who has refined his/her emotions to express his/her feelings with tenderness and love.

What are the Benefits of Mantra Chanting

What are the benefits of Mantra Chanting?

I recently joined a mantra chanting group and the question was raised as to the benefit of Mantra chanting and I started contemplating and researching on this question and the following are my thoughts on the gathered information.

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 33

“Mananaat traayate iti Mantraha” is a saying in Sanskrit which means that a mantra is that which protects (traayate) when constantly chanted in the mind. Mantras are really not man-made and have come from the Vedas. Veda means knowledge. The ancient Rishis and some modern day Rishis as well, who were inspired in their meditations, heard these sounds when they were in deeper levels of their Consciousness. These mantras were made up of Sanskrit letters. Therefore, Sanskrit is also considered the language of the Gods! The word ‘sanskrit’ actually means culture. The dictionary defines the word literally as perfected, from sam together + karoti he makes – one who refines oneself thru doing. We are all striving for perfection when we are on the spiritual path to make ourselves not only better persons but realize the divinity within us, of which we are ‘heirs’. We have the potential to evolve from the beast to human to divine beings. These divine qualities have been beautifully described in Chapter 16 of the Bhagavad Gita, wherein Lord Krishna gives solace to his disciple, Arjuna when he says, “The divine nature is deemed for liberation, the demoniac for bondage. Grieve not, O Pandava, you are born for a divine lot.” Having said so, how do we benefit from these mantras? Although it seems like a mindless exercise, to those not initiated on the subject, mantra chanting has a profound effect not only on us but also on the environment. Here’s a copy of an illustration of the effect of bijaksharas or seed letters on the body, from the book, Gayatri Mahavijnan, written by Vedamurti, Taponishtha, Pundit Shri Rama Acharya: Om is the seed or bija mantra of all mantras

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 34

The Rishis realized this Cosmic Om in the very highest planes of Consciousness, in the state of Self-realization or Atma Sakshatkar. All the mantras in existence have come from Om. It is composed of three sounds – A, U, and M. Om is found in all societies and all religions, in one form or another. Om is the foremost of mantras. Taking the example of the 24-syllabled Gayatri Mantra, first comes Om and after it the mantras of Gayatri. The twenty-four syllables of Gayatri along with Om should be considered the original Gayatri mantra. The above illustration shows the effect of these syllables on different parts of the body. Besides the popularly known 7 main chakras, there are several other smaller chakras or energy centers in the body that have been described by various names such as Tapini, Saphala, Vishwa, Tushti, Sukshma, etc. There have been described 24 such energy knots or granthis that are stimulated by these seed letters and have corresponding benefits. The bija mantras or seed letters are like little bombs that explode just at the right moment. Just as you plant a seed in the earth and from that a giant tree grows up to give thousands of fruits, the bija mantras contain similar power. With the practice of anushthana (a disciplined practice), prolonged mantra repetition for a fixed period of time and a specific number and regular sadhana, the power of the mantra is awakened. When that power is awakened, the Consciousness takes the form of the mantra. That’s when the real work of the mantra begins.

Page 35

“Sudbudhi” or “Right Thinking” is the benefit of chanting the Gayatri. The name comes from “Gayantam iti trayate Gayatri,” meaning “that mantra which protects the one who sings it or chants it”. The meaning of the mantra is as follows: “We meditate on the glorious effulgence of the resplendent Sun who is the creator and sustainer of the three worlds of bhu, bhuvah and suvah. May he kindle our intellect and illumine our wisdom for the good of all living beings” Here’s another spiritual principle stated in the following Sanskrit aphorism: Tam yatha yatha upasate, sa tathaiva bhavati. (An excerpt from “An Analysis of the Brahma Sutras” by Swami Krishnananda) “As one adores one, so does one become.” Who will not adore from the deepest recesses of the heart the best of things conceivable, which goes deep into the feelings, on which one broods forever and ever? That brooding, that deep thinking creates an impress on the mind, like a groove on the gramophone plate; we can sing the same song again and again by replaying it. This impression created by continuous thinking, wanting and adoring whatever objective may be in one’s mind – that concretizes itself into a form and presents itself before oneself, which is what we attain through meditation on anything. Upasana literally means ‘staying close’. By the practice of Upasana, one can always stay close to divinity. Through Upasana, one can control the wavering mind and concentrate on one goal. The practice of Upasana of Sri Saraswati Devi Mantra means – concentrating your mind on the Maha Saraswati Mantra through memorizing the mantra, and worshipping and seeking the grace of Sri Maha Saraswathi Devi. By meditating upon the Sri Saraswati mantra, Sri Saraswathi Devi confers Mantra Devata, that is the qualities of Herself such as knowledge, splendor and complete peace. By conferring total self-knowledge, like divine medicine, She destroys our ignorance and helps us go beyond this ‘bhava vyadhi’ the disease of taking birth again and again in this materialistic world. The moment the heart is lit up with the glow of knowledge by Devi, selfish qualities shall vanish. Gradually good qualities will arise. Anger, impatience and ego, etc. will go away. In the pond of your mind, lotuses like mercy, truth, forgiveness, tolerance, valor, charity, love, inspiration and equanimity – these divine qualities will sprout. There is no other wealth greater than the blossoming of these virtuous qualities in your heart. Meditators of this mantra can certainly control the mind and the horses of of desires. They will shine with integrity, warmth, mental purity and love. No bad thoughts come to their minds even by http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 36

mistake. They will have genuine love towards all and will be merciful towards the suffering of others. The meaning of another mantra which is a peace mantra “Bhadram karnebhihi shrunuyama Devaha..” is “May we all hear auspicious things through our ears; see sacred things with our eyes. May we all enjoy the sattvic contentment with strong and steady limbs and may we all, by the deva’s benevolence, obtain good weather and bumper harvest and gain robust health during this life span. May the devatas..Indra (the elderly learned one), Pusha (the knower of the Universe), Garuda ( the one who keeps the inner enemies at the periphery) and Brhaspati (the Creator) bestow svasti (goodness and auspiciousness) on us and give us environs conducive to protect us in our holy efforts.” Through mantra chanting not only do we evoke certain divine energies in our bodies but also in the universe, both of which are made up of the 5 elements – Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. What brings to mind is the results of Masaru Emoto’s experiments on water. If the sounds of words and music can have such a profound effect on water, what wonder is it that it can have a profound effect on our mind and body?

EVERYTHING IS CONSCIOUSNESS Today I received an email in which was discussed the effect we human beings have over water and how positive visualization can purify water. It was very interesting to me as just yesterday I was wondering in amazement of the rejuvenating nature of water. I call water “elixir” because water is cleansing and rejuvenating! It takes the shape of everything it embraces. In this video you see that speaking positive or negative words to it affects its molecular structure; when spoken to in a positive way the molecules organize themselves in a beautiful geometrical symmetry. However, speaking negative words disperses the molecules in a haphazard way that looks like they are distressed. That being said, imagine the effect positivity

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 37

or negativity on our body, mind and spirit could have on us. Very powerful indeed and so difficult to express it and appreciate it in words! In this next video you see the effect of your thought, both positive and negative on water. I like the example he is giving about drinking sweet water and if 70% of your body contains water, won't you be so much sweeter? Something to think about....We create our external reality by the thoughts we entertain. Positive thoughts give us strength and help us grow and expand in our consciousness but negative thoughts make the mind weak and contract.

Anguish

Fear

Wonder

Sorrow

Joy

My question to you is "Are you the thoughts or are they coming from you? If they do, where are they coming from? Our thoughts are like waves coming from the sea of Consciousness. Consciousness is knowledge because when we are conscious, we are aware beings. It is our Consciousness that expresses itself in name and form.

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 38

The wave that is nothing but water in essence, springs from the ocean which is also water in essence. When the wave recedes into the ocean it loses it's form and dissolves into its source, the ocean. It is the same with our thoughts. When we calm our minds and let the thoughts recede , we experience our true nature of pure, unconditional Consciousness that is full of bliss, joy and love. Mantra chanting is not a pass time nor futile exercise but a very beneficial tool to direct our lives to a positive, happy and organized life. Our thoughts are inevitable. The function of the mind is to be constantly thinking. Therefore, the mind is also called a ‘monkey’ mind. When it is not directed properly it takes up a lot of our energy in mindless thinking. The mind is very powerful when used properly. To make this point a story is told that the mind is like a Genie. It can grant anything when commanded but the one condition it has is that if it is not given a useful work, it can destroy the Master. Whenever the given task is completed it is ready for another task. So the Master gave it the task of climbing up and down the ladder till he could think of giving the Genie another task. So it is like that with chanting mantras. Instead of entertaining any negative thoughts, keep chanting powerful mantras that give power to the mind to do more useful tasks when necessary.

SRI RUDRAM 9th Anuvaaka

Today as I was reading the 9 th Anuvaka of the Namakam in the Sri Rudram chanting I was impressed with the following words that came up in the chant. PAAM SAVYA AND RAJAH (According to Maunishbhai’s translation from the Rudra Tattva) Paam-savya = minute particles which are invisible to the naked eye.

(My comment: If we say particles invisible to the naked eye it would mean they are beyond the measure of our eyes. Maybe there is no instrument known to man which can measure its size but it IS a minute particle.)

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 40

Maunishbhai further states the word stands for the subtle and abstract; spiritual secrets. RajaH: bigger, visible dust particles. Both complement each other. It is only

through this gross vehicle (human body) that one can reach out and experience the subtle. NamaH, Salutations to both the subtle and the gross. The gross is with form and therefore it is the saakaara, which means with form; the invisible is the niraakaara, or without form.

Upon further contemplation, if we looked at the root cause of all that is in existence, we can trace it to the five elements. Upon even further analysis, the root cause of even the 5 elements is Consciousness. If the root cause of Earth is water, and the root cause of water is fire, and the root cause of fire is air, the root cause of air is space; If the question arises as to what is the root cause of space, one has to say Consciousness; because space by itself cannot say it exists. It is only Consciousness or the “I AM” principle that proclaims that space exists. Therefore, the root cause of even the five elements is the ‘I AM’ principle. Consciousness has no shape i.e. no form and as a result it is infinite with no limits or boundaries. It is boundless. If you looked at the minutest particle also, Science has now come to the conclusion that if you analyzed the particles to their last core, it is nothing but Energy and that too which is not diminished for even though the forms keep changing, there is no loss in Energy. There cannot be two formless substances and therefore Consciousness and Energy or Shakti are one and the same. The visible particles have form and are called saakaara, with form. They can be many and varied. We human beings who are with Consciousness that is formless and a human body that has form are both niraakaara and saakaara.

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 41

The only way we can know our subtle nature is thru the known saakaara form. That which has no form or limits or boundaries is necessarily subtle and therefore all pervading. That is what Maunishbhai means when he says “ Both complement each other. It is only through this gross vehicle (human body) that one can reach out and experience the subtle. NamaH to both the subtle and the gross.” Both have their due respectful places and therefore, we say NamaH to both the subtle and the Gross! Shushka = parched, dry, robbed of moisture. Harita = green, moist “Any hypothesis or discussion or action devoid of the rasa (=essence) of prema-love arising from the atma is said to be shushka (dry) and vice versa. At times one can feel the dryness even in a classical music recital by a maestro, when it is felt ‘too technical’ or ‘too dry’; whereas a simple bhajan rendered by an ordinary singer who pours his heart out can move one to tears because of its ‘bhakti-rasa’ devotional content. NamaH to the shuShka and namaH to the harita. When we are happy our inner state feels like there is spring in the air. When we are sad, our inner heart feels like a desert – parched and dry.” Just like the seasons in the world outside, we experience seasons in the world inside. We go through different moods and this is what is described in the above 2 words – shuShka and harita. What are the emotions of the nava rasas that cause these different moods? Here’s a reference I found on the internet. Positive emotions or states like love, humour, compassion, chivalry and wonder can create a positive field and put you in a happy and enthusiastic state of mind. This state fills your blood with the chemicals of happiness and well-being and is conducive to the building or rebuilding of a healthy body and mind. The negative rasas like anger, fear and abhorrence, frustration create a state of mind which create a negative field through filling your blood with the chemicals of unrest and unhappiness.

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 42

Here’s another excerpt from “As A Man Thinketh” by James Allen – “Clean thoughts make clean habits. The so-called saint who does not wash his body is not a saint. He who has strengthened and purified his thoughts does not need to consider the malevolent. If you would perfect your body, guard your mind. Thoughts of malice, envy and disappointment, despondency, rob the body of its health and grace. A sour face does not come by chance; it is made by sour thoughts. Wrinkles that mar are drawn by folly, passion, pride. I know a woman of ninety-six who has the bright, innocent face of a girl. I know a man well under middle age whose face is drawn into inharmonious contours. The one is the result of a sweet and sunny disposition; the other is the outcome of passion and discontent. As you cannot have a sweet and wholesome abode unless you admit the air and sunshine freely into your rooms, so a strong body and a right, happy, or serene countenance can only result from the free admittance into the mind of thoughts of joy and goodwill and serenity. On the faces of the aged there are wrinkles made by sympathy others by strong and pure thought and others are carved by passion; who cannot distinguish them? With those who have lived righteously, age is calm, peaceful, and softly mellowed, like the setting sun. I have recently seen a philosopher on his death-bed. He was not old except in years. He died as sweetly and peacefully as he had lived.” It is easier to keep filling the garden with good seeds rather than pulling out weeds. It is better to keep planting good seeds till there is no room for the weeds to fall and grow. It is better to allow the free admittance into the mind of thoughts of joy and goodwill and serenity than always trying to make an effort not to fall into prey of the arishadvargas, the six enemies. Amma Karunamayi, my Guru and Divine Mother, had the insight into my ‘dry’ heart when she asked me how to make halva. I was surprised at her question and http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 43

quite surprised at her describing the attitude I needed to develop in my every action, as an offering to God and seeing His presence in everyone around me. She told me I should add more ingredients in the Halva, like cardemoms, nuts and saffron and decorate it making it appetizing as well, feeling that I am serving the God residing in those that I served. As is often said, “Attitude is everything in life!” That determines the weather in the inner space, antar akasha and how we face the challenges of the weather. Thoughts are called vrittis. Thoughts take form in our expressions as seen in the expressions of the dancer in the above video clips. Brahmaakara vritti (Thoughts of Brahman) is what gives us joy, happiness, peace and love. The real fountain of love is within. The path of devotion gives us the right attitude for receiving the grace of the Lord. Meditating on the ocean and the sky helps us realize our true nature which is like that of the ocean and the sky – a true representation of the nature of Pure Consciousness that is infinite, formless, divisionless, and untainted; a true representation of the nature of Pure Knowledge with infinite potential of everything that IS and can be.

Bh. Gita Ch. 15, shloka 15: Sarvasya chaaham hrdi sannivishtaH MattaH smritirjnamapohanamcha Vedaishcha sarvairahameva vedyaH Vedaantakrd Veda videva chaaham Meaning: I alone reside in the hearts of all beings and from Me emanate memory, wisdom and also their loss; I am verily that which is to be known by the Vedas; I am the author of the Vedanta and I am the knower of the Vedas. This world is the stage where we enact the drama of life. I asked my friend, who was an actress, why she accepted the role of a villainess as it made her look ugly whereas in reality she is very beautiful because of her clean heart. She explained to me that ‘acting’ was a form of art and it was a challenge to also do the part of a villainess. http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 44

She said that once she was going out with her friends to have some fun but she had to complete a shooting before she went with them. They decided to go and watch her. She acted the role of a very distressed wife who was holding her dead husband in her arms and wailed loudly in sorrow. After a few minutes the producer said, ‘cut’, and the scene ended there. Immediately she wiped her real tears and smiled to her friends and said, okay now we can go on our way as planned. They were surprised at the changes in her emotions and said, “wow, your acting was so good, it moved us to tears when we saw you crying and we really thought you were affected by the death of your spouse. But you turned it into a completely different person once the scene was shot.” She told me she never carries the emotions of the scene to her home. She can switch on and off the emotions and simply forgets whatever emotions she acted. She was pretty ‘spiritual’ in that she is always talking about God when we are together and finds her happiness only in that. Knowing our true nature, it would be great if we could realize that we are also in life playing our different roles as in different relationships of Mother, Wife, Daughter, Sister or friend, etc. At the end of the day we should switch off these emotions and get immersed in ‘Brahmaakaara vritti”. I am often reminded of this particular shloka from the

Bhagavad Gita. Ch. 3 Shloka: 17 Yastvaatmaratirevasyaat Atma triptashcha maanavaH Atmanyeva cha santushThaH Tasya kaaryam na vidyate Meaning: He who takes delight in the Self alone and is satisfied with the Self and is contented in the Self, Has no duty. In conclusion I wanted to share this scroll from Og Mandino’s best selling book, “The world’s greatest salesman”. Here is some more food for thought! Og Mandino writes

http://ushaprabhakar.com

Page 45

“I will greet this day with love in my heart. For this is the greatest secret of success in all ventures. Muscle can split a shield and even destroy life but only the unseen power of love can open the hearts of men and until I master this art I will remain no more than a peddler in the marketplace. I will make love my greatest weapon and none on whom I call can defend its force.” “And how will I speak? I will laugh mine enemies and they will become friends; I will encourage my friends and they will become brothers. Always will I dig for reasons to applaud; never will I scratch for excuses to gossip. When I am tempted to criticize I will bite on my tongue; when I am moved to praise I will shout from the roofs.”“And how will I act? I will love all manners of men for each has qualities to be admired even though they may be hidden. With love I will tear down the wall of suspicion and hate which they have built around their hearts and in its place will I build bridges so that my love may enter their souls.” I hope you have enjoyed my collection of articles which are really my ruminations over a period of 3 years. As I was compiling these articles I observed that there seems to be a running theme to these contemplations and that is my belief of our true essence being ‘Consciousness and Energy.’ This belief has come about as a result of my spiritual experience and contemplations which have concretized this belief. Our belief system is like our GPS. We cannot function without a belief in place, for all our actions are prompted by our belief system. Fortunately, the nature of our true essence is Consciousness which is formless, infinite, boundless, indivisible and untainted akin to the sky or ether. The sky is not tainted by the clouds or the rain or the pollution and anything else it holds. So we can easily change our belief system to give us the desired results. What are your core beliefs? I hope I have touched your heart enough to investigate your own belief system and find inspiration from my articles. I hope it has given you some food for thought as I share the good things of life.
