Welcome to the new Spring season The Usher Hall is at the centre of musical life in Edinburgh and in our Spring guide you’ll find a host of concerts and event experiences that will make for a great night out. On offer are a wealth of classical favourites, international bands and stars that are not to be missed.

Andrew Lawrence St Petersburg Philharmonic

Following on from a great concert with the Moscow Philharmonic last October, this season’s classical highlight is another allRussian extravaganza. Enjoy an evening with Russia’s oldest orchestra, complete with a superb programme drawing from St Petersburg Philharmonic’s incredible repertoire (29 March).

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s 11:12 Season continues featuring superb soloists such as the Scottish soprano Lisa Milne and a concert with their favourite Conductor Laureate, Neemi Järvi, as they continue to explore the Auld Alliance; virtuoso Nicola Benedetti and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra explore Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and other Italian gems; and Donald Runnicles conducting Brahms are another winning combination for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, featuring soprano Sarah Connolly. Revel too in a rare all-Russian treat and enjoy the superlative sound of one of Russia’s oldest orchestras, the St Petersburg Philharmonic. In the world of rock, pop and blues, The Hollies are marking their amazing fiftieth touring year in 2012; Joe Bonamassa, praised by none other than the ‘Godfather’ of blues himself BB King, brings the blues big time in March; Chris Rea will perform his chart-topping favourites and tracks from newer projects; and that international mega-star band of brothers, The Osmonds, visit Edinburgh on their last ever tour. With superb acoustics and a fabulous atmosphere there really is no better place to hear live music than in the Usher Hall.

Hear Beethoven alongside the contemporary he most admired (Cherubini’s Requiem was sung at Beethoven’s funeral), as the great man celebrates both an emperor and a revolutionary in the same evening. Llŷr Williams’ Beethoven is absolutely not to be missed. He recently completed his first full cycle of the piano sonatas to huge acclaim and brings immense authority and a fascinatingly unworldly quality to this music.

With a name like William Wallace you would expect his music to be stirring – but nothing prepares you for the sheer gorgeousness of this Scottish composer’s music. And that’s just the start of an evening filled with forbidden passions, as Sir Andrew Davis whirls the orchestra through Strauss’ portrait of a great seducer and joins national treasure Tasmin Little in Elgar’s rapturous love song, following their recent awardwinning recording of the concerto.

As Music Director and Principal Conductor of the St Petersburg Philharmonic since 1988, Yuri Temirkanov and his orchestra regularly undertake major international tours. Their performances have secured a legendary reputation and they have been lauded as ‘probably the world’s greatest orchestra’ by the Guardian. They have an incredibly rich historical heritage and two of the symphonies on their programme are testament to earlier troubled times. Glasgow-born conductor Douglas Boyd brings his trademark verve to our latest musical salute to the Auld Alliance, and ends the night with Beethoven’s firecracker of a symphony. First, though, there’s the pure romance of Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto with the sensational Ingrid Fliter and Fauré’s enchanting Pavane.

Benedetti is exploring the Vivaldi repertoire at the moment, and here she juxtaposes his most famous set of concerti with a scintillating rarity of Il Grosso Mogul. No-one knows where the nickname comes from but its suggestion of oriental brilliance is picked up in the rest of this colourful programme with Rameau’s sensational dances from Les Paladins.

Sunday 29 April 8.00pm Since 2003, City Praise has drawn capacity audiences from churches all over Edinburgh and the Lothians. The event is a non-denominational service of Christian worship, led by the Exile Band, Choir and Chamber Orchestra. In 2010 the event also went to Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, and now returns to Edinburgh for 2012. Join with a couple of thousand Christians from all over Edinburgh to praise and worship the King. HOW TO FIND US

The Usher Hall is located on Lothian Road, at the west end of Edinburgh, between the Royal Lyceum Theatre and the Traverse Theatre. The Usher Hall is close to Haymarket and Waverley train stations (a walk of about 15 minutes to each station). A taxi rank is situated opposite the Hall by the Sheraton Hotel.
