TASMIN LITTLE’S ELGAR

Thursday 9 February 7.30pm

Friday 3 February 7.30pm

Cherubini Overture, Démophoon Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 ‘Emperor’ Beethoven Symphony No.3 ‘Eroica’

Wallace Pelléas et Mélisande Suite R Strauss Don Juan Elgar Violin Concerto

Andrew Manze (Conductor) Llŷr Williams (Piano)

Sir Andrew Davis (Conductor) Tasmin Little (Violin)

Hear Beethoven alongside the contemporary he most admired (Cherubini’s Requiem was sung at Beethoven’s funeral), as the great man celebrates both an emperor and a revolutionary in the same evening. Llŷr Williams’ Beethoven is absolutely not to be missed. He recently completed his first full cycle of the piano sonatas to huge acclaim and brings immense authority and a fascinatingly unworldly quality to this music.

With a name like William Wallace you would expect his music to be stirring – but nothing prepares you for the sheer gorgeousness of this Scottish composer’s music. And that’s just the start of an evening filled with forbidden passions, as Sir Andrew Davis whirls the orchestra through Strauss’ portrait of a great seducer and joins national treasure Tasmin Little in Elgar’s rapturous love song, following their recent awardwinning recording of the concerto.

ROMANTIC VALENTINE’S Friday 10 February 7.30pm

Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet

Ravel La valse Mozart Piano Concerto No.21 ‘Elvira Madigan’ Mozart Overture to The Marriage of Figaro Puccini La bohème Fantasy Mascagni Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana R Strauss Suite from Der Rosenkavalier Christian Kluxen (Conductor) Simone Dinnerstein (Piano) This Valentine, give your special someone an unforgettable gift – a bouquet of romantic classics, wrapped in the luxurious sound of a full symphony orchestra and delivered with love by the charismatic Christian Kluxen. There’s operatic passion from Puccini and Strauss, Gallic glamour from Maurice Ravel, and – at the heart of it all – Mozart’s exquisite Twenty First Piano Concerto, probably the most romantic music he ever wrote, performed by American star Simone Dinnerstein. 44

Stéphane Denève (Conductor) Paul Rissmann (Presenter) In Stalin’s Russia, tragedy was banned. So how could a composer set Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to music? Luckily for us, Sergei Prokofiev knew a trick or two – and tonight, Paul Rissmann, the full RSNO and Music Director Stéphane Denève blow the gaff on one of the most passionate of all ballet scores. If you only know the piece as the theme tune to The Apprentice, trust us: you don’t know the half of it! £10 (limited concessions) Pre-concert talk (6.45pm) Duncan Swindells (RSNO Principal Bass Clarinet) £34/£25/£18.50/£14/£11 (limited concessions) 5

LISA MILNE SINGS SONGS OF THE AUVERGNE Friday 24 February 7.30pm Berlioz Rob Roy Overture Canteloube Songs of the Auvergne Franck Symphony in D minor Fabien Gabel (Conductor) Lisa Milne (Soprano) César Franck was a quiet man, but his grand, gothic spectacular of a symphony is crammed with the kind of tunes that you just can’t get out of your head. That goes double for Canteloube’s popular Songs of the Auvergne, especially when sung by the world-famous Scottish soprano Lisa Milne. And conductor Fabien Gabel continues our celebration of the Auld Alliance with Berlioz’ highland fling of an overture. Benedetti is exploring the Vivaldi repertoire at the moment, and here she juxtaposes his most famous set of concerti with a scintillating rarity of Il Grosso Mogul.
