2011-2012 marks the Cougars’ final year in DII transition The University of Sioux Falls is now in its third and final year of NCAA DII classification and will compete as a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference beginning in the 2012-13 academic year. As part of the transition process, no USF athletic teams will be eligible for post season play during the 2011-12 academic year. As a NCAA DII provisional member, USF will now be required to be in full compliance with Division II rules for scheduling, recruiting, scholarships and eligibility under the guidance of Director of Athletics, Senior Woman Administrator and Assistant Athletic Director for compliance. The university will also take part in a compliance blue print review this fall, which will serve as a follow-up to the NCAA membership Committee site visit that took place in January of 2011.

Head Coach Paul Bennett Head Coach 1st Season Paul Bennett will enter his first season as head coach of the University of Sioux Falls men’s soccer team, following six years as an assistant under director of soccer Meknonnen Afa. As the top men’s assistant at USF, Bennett helped lead the Cougars to a 61-41-9 overall record. Over the span of Bennett’s time at USF, he has been an integral part of the Cougars growth into a GPAC contender. The Cougars finished ninth in the final GPAC regular season standings in 2005 and 2006 and have had top three finishes in the final standings each of the last three seasons. USF has posted four straight 10 win seasons, including a school-record 13 wins last season that ended in the GPAC Championship match. Prior to coming to USF in 2005, Bennett spent four years as a player and another two years as an assistant coach with the Sioux Falls Spitfire of the United Soccer League Premier Development League (PDL). He grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Roosevelt HS. He started college career at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., before finishing at Morningside College, where he was a team captain. Bennett graduated with a bachelor of science degree in Human Resource Management. Bennett has also completed his USSF National “C” Coaching License. He is married to wife Stacie and has three children a daughter Xara and two sons Javi, and Xuvo.

Connor Mckee Graduate Assistant 1st Season Connor McKee will enter his first season as a member of the University of Sioux Falls men’s soccer team coaching staff following two and a half years of playing for the Cougars. As a player, McKee was a defender for USF and a two year starter at center back, where he led the Cougars to back-to-back Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Tournaments, including the GPAC championship game in 2010. McKee was a two time GPAC all-conference honorable mention selection and voted team captain his senior season. He also received the Daktronics-NAIA Men’s Soccer Scholar Athlete award his Senior year. Before playing for USF, McKee was a two year starting defender for the reserve side at Elmhurst College (Ill.) and a member of the ’07 Bluejays team that reached as high as a No.16 national ranking and made its first CCIW tournament championship appearance in school history. McKee has served as a head and assistant coach for various amateur soccer clubs including Dakota Alliance Soccer Club, Rushmore Soccer Club, the Downer’s Grove Roadrunners, as well as coaching stints with the South Dakota Olympic Development Program. McKee graduated in the summer of 2011 from the University of Sioux Falls with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration. McKee has also received USSF National “C,D,E and F” Coaching Licenses, as well as NSCAA State and Regional Goalkeeping licenses.

Director of Soccer Mekonnen Afa Director of Soccer 7th Season Mekonnen Afa will enter his eigth season as the University of Sioux Falls Director of Soccer operations. This season also marks his 5th season as the head coach of USF’s women’s soccer team. Prior to the 2011 season, Afa served as the University of Sioux Falls men’s head coach as well. Afa is coming off of a 2010 campaign which he coached the lady Cougars to a 7-9-3 overall record. USF finished sixth in the conference with a 5-4-2 regular season record and qualified for a the GPAC tournament. The Cougars season ended with a tough 2-1 loss in the first round of the GPAC playoffs. Afa mentored five USF players to all-conference honorable mention honors. In his final season at helm for the men’s team, Afa led the Cougars to an overall record of 10-8-1 and 9-3-1 record in conference play. The Cougar’s finished the year strong, winning nine of their last 10 regular season matches, including eight straight. The surge allowed USF to finish second in the conference standings and earn the No. 2 seed in the GPAC tournament. The conference record and standing is the best ever under Afa. During his seven year tenure Afa has coached 49 all-conference selections, including nine first-team players. Afa holds a 88-84-16 overall record as the men and women’s head soccer coach. Afa has been involved with soccer for many years. Afa has served as an assistant coach for the Augustana University women’s soccer team. In August of 2001, he took over as the head girls’ soccer coach of Roosevelt High School (Sioux Falls, S.D.). Under Afa’s guidance, Roosevelt posted a 40-2-8 record. In 2002, Afa led Roosevelt to a state title and was named High School Coach of the Year. Afa played with nationally ranked National American University for four years. Afa earned a B.S. in Business Administration from NAU in May 2000. He is also currently pursuing a Masters of Business Administration at USF. Afa and his wife, Jessica, have two daughters, Mineya and Syda.
