2011-2012 marks the Cougars’ final year in the DIi transition The University of Sioux Falls is now in its third and final year of NCAA DII classification and will compete as a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference beginning in the 2012-13 academic year. As part of the transition process, no USF athletic teams will be eligible for post season play during the 2011-12 academic year. As a NCAA DII provisional member, USF will now be required to be in full compliance with Division II rules for scheduling, recruiting, scholarships and eligibility under the guidance of Director of Athletics, Senior Woman Administrator and Assistant Athletic Director for compliance. The university will also take part in a compliance blue print review this fall, which will serve as a follow-up to the NCAA membership Committee site visit that took place in January of 2011.

The Team USF’s leader in each of the following categories is anticipated to return for the 2011 season: points, goals, game winning goals, shot percentage and shots on goal. Coaches Mekonnen Afa Head Coach 5th Season Mekonnen Afa will enter his eighth season at the University of Sioux Falls, fifth as the head Women’s soccer coach. Prior to the 2011 season, Afa served as the University of Sioux Falls men’s head coach as well. Afa is coming off of a 2010 campaign which he coached the lady Cougars to a 7-9-3 overall record. USF finished sixth in the conference with a 5-4-2 regular season record and qualified for the GPAC tournament. The Cougars season ended with a tough 2-1 loss in the first round of the GPAC playoffs. Afa mentored five USF players to all-conference honorable mention honors. In his final season at helm for the men’s team, Afa led the Cougars to an overall record of 10-8-1 and 9-3-1 record in conference play. The Cougar’s finished the year strong, winning nine of their last 10 regular season matches, including eight straight. The surge allowed USF to finish second in the conference standings and earn the No. 2 seed in the GPAC tournament. The conference record and standing is the best ever under Afa. During his seven year tenure Afa has coached 49 all-conference selections, including nine first-team players. Afa holds a 88-84-16 overall record as the men and women’s head soccer coach. In 2009, Afa led the Cougars women to set a school record for wins in a season, posting a 10-8-1 overall record. USF finished fifth in the conference with a 7-4-1 regular season record and qualified for the GPAC playoffs. Sophomore forward Tasia Murray earned first team all-GPAC selection, with four other Cougars earning all-conference recongition on either the second team or honorable mention. The 2008 women’s squad won four of their last five conference games to finish 5-5-2 in the GPAC and earn a spot in the GPAC tournament. Overall, the women finished 6-11-2 and had three players recognized by the conference for their outstanding play. Afa has been involved with soccer for many years. Afa has served as an assistant coach for the Augustana University women’s soccer team. In August of 2001, he took over as the head girls’ soccer coach of Roosevelt High School (Sioux Falls, S.D.). Under Afa’s guidance, Roosevelt posted a 40-2-8 record. In 2002, Afa led Roosevelt to a state title and was named High School Coach of the Year. Afa played with nationally ranked National American University for four years. Afa earned a B.S. in Business Administration from NAU in May 2000 and received a Masters of Business Administration at USF. Afa and his wife, Jessica, have two daughters, Mineya and Syda.

Coaches Angie Nearman Assistant Coach 8th Season Angie Nearman enters her eighth year as the women’s assistant soccer coach at the University of Sioux Falls. Nearman joined the program as a coach in 2004 after playing as a Cougar from 1995-2000. She was a part of the original USF women’s soccer team in 1996 and has been with the program for 13 of the 16 year’s it has been in existence. Nearman has coached youth soccer the past five years and spent time with the Dakota Gold Club. She holds a National D license. Nearman is a native of Harrisburg, S.D. and also a USF alumni. She has three children, Harper, Kameron and Tryg. Nearman works full-time as the owner of Truks-N-Trykes Daycare Center in Sioux Falls.

Becca Matthews Graduate Assistant 2nd Season Becca Mathews enters her second year as a graduate assistant for the USF women’s soccer program. Mathews is a 2009 graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University where she started for the Wildcats women’s soccer team for four seasons. While at IWU she was named a team captain as a senior, helped the Wildcats to two NAIA National Tournament appearances and two appearances at the NCCAA national tournament where IWU won a national title in 2007. While at IWU, Mathews created a mentoring program that bridged the gap between the IWU women’s soccer team and an area high school team called A2A (Athlete to Athlete).Mathews graduated with honors from IWU with a double major in Business Administration and Adolescent Ministries. Becca has been a coach for several different sports in her past but most recently served as the Sports Coordinator for Camp Timberline, Inc. located in Estes Park, Colo. Mathews is a native of Spring Arbor, Mich. She has one sister, a varsity member of Huntington University soccer team, and one brother, who works as a English teacher in China.

High School: Varsity letter-winner for the Bulldogs in soccer…also played volleyball…active in DECA and student government…. member of the national Honor Society…Honor Roll. Personal: Has one sister, Jordyn…Business Administration major with Entrepreneurial Studies and Spanish double-minors…professional goal is become a business owner.

O’Gorman High School: Four year varsity soccer player... member of two state championship teams at O’Gorman and a First Team South Dakota All-State selection in 2010. She was a member of the National Honor Society. Personal: daughter of Kevin and Cindy Olson and has one brother, Thomas, and one sister, Taylor, who is a midfielder for USF...intends on playing either defense or midfield at USF and will major in Biology.

In 2009, she was first-team all-state after receiving all-state honorable mention honors in 2008. She was also a member of the Dakota Gold Club team that won six consecutive state championships. Grogan was a four-year letterwinner in basketball and earned the National Women in Athletics Award.

High School: four year varsity player... named to the All-Excalibur Tournament Team, an all-conference honorable mention selection and team captain. She was also a member of the 2010 Cal South National Cup semi-finalist team, the Socal Blues Club...the team was nationally ranked top 10 by got soccer and top drawer. Also a four time Presidents Academic Award recipient. Personal: daughter of Todd and Cyndi Parmenter... intends to major in Special Education at USF. Professional goal is to become a Applied Behavior Analysis.

Personal:Has two brothers...excercise science major...professional goal is to become a Dermatologist.

Frontier High School: First team all-league selection and seconde team all-area selection... also has nine years of club experience. Also a state qualifier in track and field. Halle was also a place kicker on the varsity football team.

Katie played club ball for the TRSA Legacy, who were State Cup finalist and tied for the league championship in 2010. Personal: daughter of Jeff and Kim O’Neill and has two brothers, Dan and Tom.
