2012 USF SOFTBALL
NEW LOOK COUGAR SQUAD LOOKS TO TURN HEADS IN 2012 The University of Sioux Falls is in its final year of NCAA D-II reclassification and will join the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference next fall. The Cougar softball program enters its provisional season with a new head coach at the helm and several new faces on the roster. Head coach Travis Lape served as an assistant coach for the 2011 squad that finished 10-22 overall and failed to qualify for the GPAC postseason tournament. The Cougars have put that tough season behind them and Coach Lape expects the team to be much more competitive in 2012. Stating his expectation quite clearly, Lape issued, “I am very excited and optimistic about this season. Our goal is to produce a winning season and to prepare for next year, when we join the NSIC, one of the top softball conferences in NCAA D-II.” “We have a great group of young ladies here at USF to lead us into this new era of softball and I’m excited to see what they can do on the field against NCAA competition.” In terms of offense, USF returns seven of nine everyday starters from the 2011 team, including junior first baseman and first team All-GPAC selection Naomi Tesar. In the midst of a disappointing 2011, the Lake Villa (Ill.) native had a breakthrough year. Tesar started all 32 games at first base and led the Cougars in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.386) on-base percentage (.486), slugging (.648), runs scored (22), walks (16) and home runs (4). Tesar was even better in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) games, where she tallied a GPAC slash line of .392/.508/.667. Tesar improved her GPAC batting average by 109 points between her freshman and sophomore seasons, the highest jump amongst all sophomores in the conference (Nebraska Wesleyan's Marcia Kennedy improved her batting average from .310 to .431 between her junior and senior seasons). Tesar was rewarded with first-team All-GPAC honors-the first Cougar to be named to the first team since Kristin Kono in 2006. “Norm (Naomi’s nickname) is going to be an anchor for us at the plate and I’m looking for her to build on her strong sophomore season,” Lape said. Senior outfielder Jenna Turner will also be a focal point of the USF offense. The Augustana College/Nebraska Wesleyan transfer earned honorable mention all-GPAC honors in her first season with

the Cougars. She started 29 games in the outfield and hit .353 (30-for-85) with 11 RBI, 4 triples and one home run. Turner also went 3-for-3 and fell a home run shy of the cycle in the 9-1 win over Briar Cliff (3/30). “Jenna Turner is my lone senior and I’m really looking for her to be a leader for our younger players,” Lape said. “She has had an interesting collegiate experience, playing for 4 coaches in 5 years, so she’s had to get used to new coaching styles each year. I am very proud of her to being open minded and excited about this year. She has a passion for the game and it’s really been fun to see the way she is taking it all in during her senior year. Nothing would be more enjoyable for me than to send her out on a high note this year.” Along with Tesar and Turner, Coach Lape will look to juniors Janni Brylla and Shae Reinke to provide veteran leadership and depth to a team that has “the potential to be competitive with every team on our schedule,” according to Lape. Brylla saw action in 19 games last season and batted .286 with 2 RBI and seven walks. Brylla has spent the offseason recovering from a lower back injury and is expected to be ready to play by spring break. Reinke made 18 starts and tallied three hits, two RBI and five walks. “Shae is very dependable and has the ability to play infield, catcher and even the outfield,” Lape said. “She plays the game with a lot of heart and I anticipate that she’ll do a lot of good things this season.” Sophomore Noelle Roden will continue to serve as a power presence in the lineup. She made 25 starts as a freshman, primarily from the designated hitter slot, and hit .271 with a team-high 20 RBI. “Noelle has really come a long with her hitting so far this season,” Lape said. “It will be fun to see her hard work start to pay off once we start playing games.” Sophomore Tori Maule batted .238 (19-for-80) as the Cougars' everyday leftfielder with seven RBI. Maule committed just three errors last season and was also 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts. Elliot Lenz will move to the backstop after playing shortstop her rookie season. The Lake Crystal, Minn., native batted .204 with five RBI and 10 hits, including a homer. “I see Elliott Lenz playing a big role for our team this year,” Lape said. “She is going to be our commander on the field and so right now we are working hard with her to be vocal from behind the plate.”

Junior Shelby Thompson is redshirting after batting .276 last year and earning All-GPAC honorable mention honors. Other additions to the 2012 roster include two freshmen, four junior college transfers and a transfer from Dakota Wesleyan University. Shelby Stewart comes to the Cougars after a stellar prep career at Holden High School (Mo.). The versatile infielder earned four softball letters and was a three-time member of the MRVC East and alldistrict first teams. She was also a two-time second team all-region selection and a three-time team MVP for the Lady Eagles. Elaina Deadrick was a three sport athlete at Platte-Geddes who can play a variety of infield positions. Sophomore transfer Kellen Dewey is expected to make an immediate impact. The shortstop turned heads in one season at Grand Rapids Community College, where she tallied a slash line of .439/.482/.690 in 44 games for the Raiders. Dewey recorded seven doubles, six home runs, scored 34 runs and had a stolen base success rate of .923 (24-of-26). She was a member of the 2011 MCCAA AllDistrict tournament team, 2011 Louisville Slugger NFCA NJCAA Division II All Region squad. Her .439 batting average stands as the best regular season average in the history of GRCC softball. Junior infielders Katie Larson and Priscilla Quintana arrived in Sioux Falls by way of Iowa Lakes Community College. Larson provided a consistent presence at the plate for the Lakers, batting .400 with 42 hits (10 doubles), six home runs and 30 RBI. Quintana batted .470 in 2011 with three home runs for a Lakers squad that went 27-12 in 2011. She was named second team ICCAC All-Region as a sophomore and first team as a freshman. Iowa Lakes went 61-11 in 2010 and was the 2010 ICCAC, Region XI and District F champions. Newcomer Ariel Sanders played two seasons at Fort Scott Community College (Kan.). The outfielder earned six varsity letters at Baldwin High School (Kan.) USF returns a pair of arms that recorded 65 percent of the 196.2 innings pitched in 2011. Sophomore ace Bailey Bouman will join the team at the conclusion of the USF basketball season and big things are expected from the powerful righty. Bouman served as the Cougars’ workhorse in 2011, placing in the top-5 in the GPAC with 117.1 innings pitched. She went 6-12 on the year and notched 61 of the Cougars’ 81 strikeouts (.753).
2012 USF SOFTBALL
“Bailey Bouman is going to be key for us this year,” Lape said. “This being her second year at USF, we are really looking for her to push our pitching staff to new limits.” Joining Bouman on the staff this year will be Janni Brylla, Kellen Dewey and Amanda Walters. Brylla made six appearances last year, posting two strikeouts in 10 innings of work. Dewey has high school and junior college pitching experience. Walters joined the Cougars after a year of play with Dakota Wesleyan University. As a freshman, she hit .244 (21-for-86) with four doubles and 16 RBI. She also hit two home runs. “I only have one senior this year, so we’re young, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing,” Lape said. “The majority of this team will learn and play together for a full year before we are NSIC members and can participate in the conference tournament. I think that’s really going to help us next season when we play tough NSIC teams week in and week out.” The 2012 Schedule (=opponents’ 2011 overall record) Similar to the other USF athletic teams, Cougar softball will endure a grueling road schedule this season. The squad will play 36 of its 42 games away from Sioux Falls and open the 2012 campaign with 22 straight on the road. “I am excited about our schedule; it is going to allow us right away to see how we match up in the NCAA D-II rankings against some of the top programs in the NSIC,” Lape said. “We have some great competition that will allow us to evaluate the team and what it is going to take to make this step.” USF opens its season on February 24 when its travels to Rochester, Minn., for single games against Wisconsin-Parkside (13-31) and no. 23 Winona State (37-13). The Cougars then head to Fayette, Iowa for a twinbill at Upper Iowa (6-41). The Cougars will travel to Florida for the annual spring break trip. USF will play ten games in the Sunshine State, starting with a 1 p.m. tilt against Indiana Tech (38-16) followed by a 3 p.m. matchup versus Hillsdale College (16-31) on March 19. New York Institute of Technology (5-35), Franklin Pierce (10-31), Oklahoma Christian (40-14), Midland University (17-32), Taylor University (19-22) and Mount Mercy (22-24) fill out the Cougars’ spring break slate. Upon return from spring break, the Cougars travel to Wayne, Neb., for a doubledip versus the Wildcats (37-17) on March 27. Two days later, USF visits crosstown rival Augustana College (50-11). The Cougars then hit the road for a pair of twinbills against former NAIA foes; Dakota State on April 3 (14-25) and Northwestern College on April 6 (16-22). USF will make its home debut on April 7, when the Cougars will host former GPAC opponent Dakota Wesleyan (12-23). Following that, the Cougars’ bus will head to Aberdeen on April 10 for two games versus Northern State (14-29).
2012 USF SOFTBALL
On April 11, USF will host NCAA D-I University of Nebraska-Omaha (47-11). The Cougars play the next eight on the road; versus UNO (April 14), three-time defending GPAC champion Morningside College (46-11) on April 15, Northwest Missouri State (25-19) on April 21 and Truman State (20-28) on April 22. The Cougars’ final home stand will be against Dakota State (14-25) on April 24. It will also serve as Senior Day. USF will close out its 2012 campaign with a four game series at Minot State (30-12) on April 28-29. As the softball team continues to make the transition to Division II, Coach Lape has a fresh outlook on what lies ahead for the program. Invested in a new culture, with a nice balance of veteran leadership and young talent the Cougars are prepared to make some noise in 2012. “I believe after watching this team play this fall and in practice that we have potential this year to really change perceptions about the USF softball program,” Lape added. “Our team expectations are set high and the girls come into practice every day trying to achieve the challenges we lay out in front of them.”

Travis Lape Head Coach 1st Season at USF 1st Season Overall
Travis Lape has accepted the head softball coaching position at the University of Sioux Falls, athletics director Willie Sanchez announced on May 12, 2011. "I am extremely excited and honored to be blessed with the opportunity to lead the Cougar softball program," Lape said. "The University of Sioux Falls represents a standard of academic and athletic excellence that is second to none and I am excited to get the opportunity to continue to build on the foundation of the softball program." Lape is no stranger to the USF softball program, having served as an assistant coach for the Cougars the past three seasons. Lape began his coaching career in 2005, spending three years as a Little League baseball coach. In 2008, he made the switch to softball and led the Salem (S.D.) junior high team to a second-place finish in the state. He then coached the West Central High School junior varsity squad for two seasons. The Trojans placed fifth in the state in 2009 and improved to third place in 2010. Last summer, Lape coached the Midwest Dirt Devils; a travel softball team for players that aspire to compete at the collegiate level. From 2008-2010, Lape was the head coach for the South Dakota Dynamite, a U-16 summer team in the Sioux Empire Fastpitch League, accumulating an overall record of 74-32. The Dynamite notched a top-6 finish in the state ASA tournament in 2009. In 2010, the Dynamite finished as a top-5 team in South Dakota and earned a berth to the USSSA U16 World Series in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A native of Marion, S.D., Lape holds a degree in elementary education from the University of Sioux Falls. Lape is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. In his spare time, he enjoys golf, baseball and working in sports video production.
