USF music department

Music is a fair and glorious gift of God...I am strongly persuaded that after theology, there is no art that can be placed on a level with music.

The longer I am in the music department at USF, the more I appreciate our outstanding faculty. They are invested in making our ensembles the best they can possibly be. Their dedication is humbling and brings out the best in their students.

It’s hard not to get involved at USF. For me, it’s music. Whether swing dancing to the Jazz Band, rehearsing classics with the strings ensemble or singing Gospel or German with the choir, music will always be part of my life. This unique community welcomes one and all to participate in and find a home within the Music Department.

USF CONCERT CHORALE EUROPEAN TOUR 2012 From the Eiffel Tower to the windmills of the Netherlands, the USF Concert Chorale enjoyed the sights, people and cuisine of the unique cultures they encountered on their January 2012 European tour. The Chorale members sang, served and shared God’s love with the people of France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Tour Highlights: • Viewing the city of Paris at night from the Eiffel Tower • Providing worship music for Mass at Notre Dame de Paris • Seeing the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo at the Louvre • Delivering collected winter clothing, sharing a meal and singing for guests at the St. Magdelana Parish Homeless Shelter in Bruges, Belgium • Visiting the Anne Frank House • Partnering in ministry with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in Amsterdam • Sharing traditional Dutch pancakes and singing for residents at a nursing home outside of Amsterdam • Singing in the Chartres Cathedral in Chartres, France; the Church of St. Germain de Pres in Paris, France; St. Salvator’s Cathedral in Bruges, Beligum; and the English Church in Amsterdam, the Netherlands Student Reflections: The European tour was an unbelievable experience, thanks to our amazing guide and the tour planning of our director. Meeting the people of France, Belgium and the Netherlands opened my eyes to different views, all the while reminding me that we are connected through Christ. -Jake Versteeg, ‘12 The magnitude of the European choir tour experience was far greater than any other musical event in which I have participated. Using our voices to sing in reverence and praise to God, no matter if we were in the Cathedral of Notre Dame or on a side street of Bruges, made me recognize the unity that our choir members have with one another. What a special opportunity I had to share my abilities with others like me, in a place so foreign to us. -Davee Johnson, ‘13 The European choir tour taught me that we, as a country, are far younger and smaller than we tend to think. Visiting the many cathedrals and buildings that have been standing for hundreds of years in Europe, one begins to feel small and insignificant. But we are not insignificant in God’s sight. -Rachel Gould, ‘13

Join the

Madrigal tradition

at USF

An annual series of Renaissance-themed Christmas dinner theatre performances, the Madrigals became a University of Sioux Falls tradition when established in 1963 by Professor Emeritus Lois Harchanko. One of the longest-standing and strongest traditions associated with USF, the Madrigal performances feature the strengths of the Singing Camerata and the talents of numerous instrumentalists. Madrigal guests are treated to a delicious four-course meal and entertained with jokes, dramatic sketches, songs, solos, instrumental music, dances and a court jester. Held in the Ward Lobby of the McDonald University Center, the evening begins with a musical reception, after which students, in elegant Renaissance costumes, escort dinner guests to the festively decorated Salsbury Dining Hall for a Christmas feast. It’s a USF holiday experience to remember! Nathan Schlatter, Hopkins, Minn. Theology/Youth Ministry Major

I came to USF because of my family — my mom went here. I’ve stayed because of the community and friends I’ve made and because of how this school has provided a place where I’ve been challenged and have grown in my faith. God is moving at USF, and I am thankful God called me to be here.

Katelynn Peterson, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Music Education/Vocal Performance Major What makes music at USF so special to me is that the members involved never forget the real reason we make music: As praise for God. It’s the heart we put into everything, both musical and non-musical, that makes the department so important.

Music Dr. David DeHoogh-Kliewer Director of Choral Activities Associate Professor of Music (605) 331-6629 dave.dk@usiouxfalls.edu Dr. David DeHoogh-Kliewer is a baritone himself, but what he relishes more than a solo is a chance to bring together an entire choir. That is what makes him an ideal director of choral activities and associate professor of music, a position he has held at USF since 2006. DeHoogh-Kliewer’s leadership of USF’s flagship choir, the Concert Chorale, and its elite counterpart, the Singing Camerata, combines his love of vocal music with his enthusiasm for travel. The associate professor has led the Concert Chorale on tours nationally, and, thanks to his direction, the group had the opportunity to perform in early 2010 throughout Italy, including performances in Venice’s St. Mark’s Cathedral and singing for the Pope in Vatican City. In 2012, the choir toured France, including a performance at Notre Dame de Paris, with additional stops in Belgium and the Netherlands. Likewise, DeHoogh-Kliewer has secured attractive opportunities for the Singing Camerata, taking this group on a tour of Budapest, Vienna and Prague in 2008. In March 2013, the Concert Chorale and Singing Camerata embarked on a West Coast tour, singing and serving in the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego. The choir will tour Italy again in 2014 with performances in Rome, Florence, Venice and several smaller villages. He is also responsible for directing the Madrigal Dinner performances that are a hallmark of the holidays at USF. DeHoogh-Kliewer is just as at ease in the classroom, where he is well-served by a doctoral degree in choral conducting from the University of Kansas, a master’s degree in vocal music education from the University of South Dakota and a bachelor’s degree in music education from Bethel College in North Newton, Kan. Before making the switch to higher education, the associate professor accrued 11 years of experience teaching in the public school system. At USF, DeHoogh-Kliewer teaches courses in music education, music theory and conducting. DeHoogh-Kliewer’s commitment to his profession goes beyond campus. He is a member of the American Choral Director’s Association, enjoys conducting choral festivals and facilitates the college chapter for the National Association for Music Education. DeHoogh-Kliewer and wife Michelle have two daughters, Hannah and Emma.

Faculty Nancy Wilcoxson Director of Vocal Music Assistant Professor of Music

(605) 331-6668 nancy.wilcoxson@usiouxfalls.edu There is no fooling the well-trained ear of Nancy Wilcoxson—it only takes a few notes for her to distinguish a superior singing voice from one that needs her help. A seasoned vocal and ensemble clinician, Wilcoxson is sought for her expertise as a voice teacher, and she has served countless times as a judge for contests across South Dakota, including those for the state’s highly-regarded honor choir and the Music Teachers National Association. Wilcoxson is a long-standing member of USF’s faculty, joining its ranks on a part-time basis in 1988. She accepted her current full-time role as assistant professor of vocal music in 2006. Wilcoxson traces her professional roots back to the University and the program she now helps guide. She received her undergraduate degree from USF before going on to earn her master’s degree from the University of South Dakota. Wilcoxson is ABD (All But Dissertation) from the University of Northern Colorado. Wilcoxson directs the mixed chorus Cantare and teaches a variety of courses that capitalize on her proficiency in vocal music, vocal diction, vocal pedagogy and music history. Wilcoxson has a long-held interest in opera, another skill she brings to USF as she teaches students to perform and direct her favorite genre. The assistant professor serves as vice president of Sounds of South Dakota, an organization committed to promoting opera within the state and the region, and is an active member of both the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the Music Teachers National Association. Wilcoxson has been married to husband Kirby for more than 30 years. They have two daughters, Nicole and Danielle.

Music Faculty Dr. Jonathan Neiderhiser Director of Instrumental Music Associate Professor of Music

(605) 331-6667 jonathan.neiderhiser@usiouxfalls.edu Whether he is shaping a delicate woodwind or brass melody, providing the toe-tapping beats for a student swing dance night, evoking just the right musical mood for a theatrical scene or teaching the finer points of the German augmented sixth chord, Dr. Jonathan Neiderhiser is passionate about making great music. Neiderhiser came to USF in 2007, bringing with him a wealth of experience as a conductor and teacher. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University where he went on to become an adjunct professor and assistant conductor of instrumental ensembles. Neiderhiser earned his doctorate in conducting from West Virginia University, and, while studying there, he became the founding director and kappelmeister of the Schola Cantorum at the Lutheran campus chapel. Neiderhiser also worked as director of bands at Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va. As an associate professor of music and director of instrumental music at USF, Neiderhiser has plenty of opportunities to share his love of conducting. He leads the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra and has directed the pit ensembles for USF theatre productions, including The Producers, Guys and Dolls and The Fantasticks. He teaches courses in music theory, conducting and American music, and serves as Area Chair for the Visual and Performing Arts. Neiderhiser is dedicated to professional development. He is a former assistant editor of Music Theory: Explorations and Applications, an academic journal that includes an article he authored. Locally, he is a member of the Sioux Falls Municipal Band and a substitute hornist with the Dakota Wind Ensemble and the South Dakota Symphony. Neiderhiser is married to Dr. Jenny Bangsund, and they have one daughter, Johanna.
