University of Southern Indiana Foundation Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2012 We are pleased to present the 2012 Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors. This year we continue our format with stories and photos of incredible individuals associated with the University. Some are recipients of your generosity and others, by their gifts, participate in the University of Southern Indiana Foundation’s mission of support. These compelling stories depict only a fraction of the people supported through the generosity of those who make gifts to the University of Southern Indiana Foundation, but dramatically illustrate the profound benefit private gifts provide. We hope you enjoy this year’s edition.
A complete list of donors to Foundation programs can be found at www.usi.edu/giving. Click on the Honor Roll of Donors link. If you do not want your name to appear in the online listing, notify the Foundation office at 812/464-1918. On the cover After 21 years the University of Southern Indiana Spring Commencement was held, once again, on campus. Spring 2012 Commencement took place over two days in April with five ceremonies in the Physical Activities Center. More than 900 students participated. “Since we have held the fall Commencement on campus, graduates and their families have responded enthusiastically to being at USI for degree conferral,” said President Linda L. M. Bennett. “With spring Commencement now on campus, more families will experience a memorable connection to the University at the time of great achievement for our graduates.”
Dear Friends: Around this time of year, I’m often reminded of all that we have to be thankful for. This year, I’ve been reflecting on the variety of opportunities our students and faculty have in the areas of study and research—opportunities that help us become a stronger and more vibrant community, and create a positive footprint in the region and around the world. Many opportunities wouldn’t be possible without the support of friends like you. Your gifts to the USI Foundation make you part of a silent partnership with the University. Behind the scenes, your support is helping to pave the way for new and exciting opportunities. Over the past year, scholarships made it possible for a number of our students to study and take part in internships overseas. I’m particularly excited about these expanded global offerings. In the latest issue of USI Magazine, we reported on Jessica Durkin, a student who is cataloging all of the religious architecture in Evansville. Jessica is able to do this because a bequest years ago from a thoughtful University friend provides support for USI students now and will do so in perpetuity. This fall, with the help of another benefactor, our new Applied Engineering Center will be completed and our students will begin using it in the spring. Through the Center, we’ll be partnering with local industry in groundbreaking ways. We have stories like this across our campus. Private gifts for the College of Liberal Arts help underwrite resources and provide funds for faculty research and development. Donors to our College of Nursing and Health Professions make possible a faculty enhancement fund for ongoing education, as well as opportunities for students, research, and community health programs. Gifts to the Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education make it possible for students and faculty to take part in research and attend conferences. Investments in sports programs help underwrite scholarships for our athletes on 13 varsity teams. Your support also provides financial assistance and merit awards. More than 1,043 scholarships are awarded each year from private scholarship funds— a total value of more than $1.3 million. Without your help, and that of other friends like you, none of this would be possible. Our students and faculty are reaching new levels of excellence. Thank you for all you do to continue to make USI a success.

Dear Alumni and Friends of USI, This year, the morning of October 10 was sunny and crisp. Surrounded by brilliant foliage of maple, birch, and elm trees, officials from Vanderburgh County, USI, and Burdette Park gathered on campus with students, faculty, and interested citizens to formally open the USI-Burdette Trail. This three-mile paved greenway is a point of pride, not only for the University and Burdette Park, but for all of Evansville and the entire county. One of the speakers at the ribbon-cutting ceremony called to mind the memory of Shirley W. James, another, that of the late Judge William H. Miller. Both of these individuals adopted Evansville as their home, were activists for positive change in this community, always advocated for good, and were staunch supporters of USI and of the partnership to build the USI-Burdette Trail. I knew Mrs. James and Judge Miller well. Their efforts on behalf of this project, and for so many others, can be summed up in a quote by the American psychologist and philosopher, William James (1842– 1910), “The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.” It was over 20 years ago when the trail was first envisioned. In the ensuing years, people like James and Miller and a host of others kept advancing the idea. After years of committee work and collaboration between city, county, University, and the state of Indiana, it came to fruition. Without those early leaders, however, this new walking and biking trail which “flows like a ribbon across the natural landscape between the University campus and Burdette Park” would not exist. Those of you reading this report follow in that tradition. Your gifts to benefit the University of Southern Indiana ensure its future. Because of your generosity, I am pleased to report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012, gifts to the USI Foundation totaled $7,026,906. The assets of the Foundation grew by $6.1 million to a record $83.6 million. Your belief in USI has led to your support for this great institution. We remain grateful for your continuing conviction that higher education changes lives for the better and that USI provides the high-quality education required in today’s competitive world. Mindful of those who have given in the past, and confident about all who will give in the future, I thank you for your generous gifts this past fiscal year. It is a privilege to serve you in your efforts to benefit our students, faculty, and community. Sincerely,
David A. Bower, CFRE Director of University Development President, USI Foundation Enjoying the USI-Burdette Trail

De ’96 and Tim ’82 Brown
Student athletes stir couple to support scholarships A
passion for their alma mater, a desire to help student athletes beyond the basketball court, and a company matching gift program kindled an interest in Tim and De Brown to offer financial support to the University of Southern Indiana. The Browns have been basketball season ticket holders for 18 years. The Browns met while students at USI, and their paths crossed during student events. Tim was a member of Student Union Board (now Activities Programming Board (APB), Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and served as a Big Brother to Sigma Kappa sorority. De was a Sigma Kappa and a Little Sister to Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Tim graduated in 1982. De worked full-time, continued with classes, and graduated in 1996. She worked in the Registrar’s Office and then transferred to Human Resources.
We agreed that assisting them through a scholarship would be something that could benefit them the rest of their lives.” Tim was working at GE Plastics at that time and the company offered a matching program for gifts to nonprofit organizations. “The matching gift program was another incentive to give to the Varsity Club,” they said. Tim is the Americas product coordinator for SABIC Engineering Resins (formerly GE Plastics). He interacts daily with people on every continent to meet the needs of the customers. “I returned to USI and completed courses which helped me reach my current position,” he said.
De volunteered to take tickets at USI basketball games, and Tim joined her. He followed USI basketball as a student when games were played at the gym of the original YMCA and then at the Physical Activities Center. “I’m not sure if there were more students in attendance then, but I can tell you we were loud and a force to be reckoned with.”
De is the site employee relations manager for the Nuclear Engineering Group of the Babcock and Wilcox Company. She directs on-site employees in all areas of their employment, from recruitment to retirement. She also is a member of the advisory board for the Ivy Tech Corporate College. The board encourages students to look at two-year degrees in a technical area. She promotes the two-year degree, knowing it can lead to a four-year degree, possibly at USI.
“We joined the Varsity Club, whose membership fees go to scholarship support,” De said. “While attending games, we learned the personal history of the players and some of their struggles.
Their daughters, Allison Brown ’09 and Chelsea West ’07, are enrolled in graduate programs at USI, observing a Brown family tradition of college degrees from USI.
Glorisel Cruz
Inspiring others to do more than they ever thought they could G
lorisel Cruz was born in Jalisco, Mexico. She arrived in the United States in 2000 at the age of eight when her family moved to Chicago, Illinois, and later to Logansport, Indiana. A high school education was out of reach for her parents. Her siblings completed high school and entered the workforce. Cruz is the first in her family to attend college. Cruz is a junior at the University of Southern Indiana. She pursues a double major, studying Spanish and health services, and is regularly on the honors list. The dean of the College of Liberal Arts recognized her academic work and presented her with one of two of the college’s $1,000 USI Foundation Excellence in Learning awards. “It represents my sacrifices to get where I am, but it also is recognition for my family’s sacrifices,” said Cruz. “I hope other minority students see me as an example, so they will believe they can achieve more than they think.” “Glorisel is one of the most committed students with a Hispanic heritage we have at USI,” said Dr. Manuel Apodaca-Valdez, assistant professor of Spanish. He and his wife Dr. Norma Rosas Mayen, also an assistant professor of Spanish, led a two-week global engagement research program this past summer, and Cruz was one of eight students who conducted interviews and immersed herself in cultural aspects of Dominican life. As a first-generation college student, Cruz often relies on support from other students and administrators in the academic world.

“My parents only finished third grade,” she said. “They’re supportive, but don’t always understand the demands on a college student.” Cruz turned to the Student Support Services (SSS) program in University Division for assistance. SSS is one of eight grantfunded TRIO programs offered through the U.S. Department of Education. The USI SSS program helps to motivate 140 eligible students to successfully complete their college degrees. “Student Support Services is more than a program, it’s a family,” said Cruz. “They care about your academic success and your personal wellness. Once, I had a family emergency and had to go home. The next day, the director called me to see if everything was alright. That meant a lot to me.” In the spring she received a Student of the Year award from the program. Student of the Year winners are entrusted to serve as ambassadors for the SSS program and encourage fellow SSS students to achieve their goals. Cruz fills her days helping other students. She is enrolled in the Honors Program, serves as historian of the Hispanic Student Union, participates in programs through USI’s Multicultural Center, and, as a resident assistant, is a mentor for students who live on campus. Cruz also holds the Gordon and Gail Kelley Health Professions Award, the Indiana Higher Education Award, and a departmental scholarship.

or 17 years Robert “Bob” and Gayle Jeffers have been members of the President’s Associates, the most prestigious giving society of the University of Southern Indiana Foundation. Both are in education fields. Bob is an instructor in advertising at USI and Gayle is a psychologist for the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation. They hope their giving serves as a model for friends, colleagues, and students.
pound for the tabs. She had enlisted USI employees to help her. The money received supported the local RMH.
“I remember how important scholarships were for me as a student,” Bob said. “My family didn’t have a lot of money.
“The reaction from my students when we presented Jenny with the tabs was wonderful,” he said. “Having the ability to give to someone in their community without getting anything in return is a valuable lesson. That selfless generosity made the students feel good, and the project was arguably the highlight of my 20 years at the University.”
“I admire the people who fund substantial scholarships at USI, and I’m sure they’ve been told a number of times how much they positively affect a student’s life. But I also believe even the smallest scholarship helps.” Last year, Bob witnessed how students react when they are inspired to give. Jenny Medcraft, a colleague of Bob’s who retired recently from USI as a computer systems analyst, benefitted from the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) during her son’s five-year battle with cancer. She supported a RMH campaign by collecting pull tabs from beverage cans, and a recycling company agreed to pay a premium rate per

When Bob heard about her effort, he challenged the students in his Introduction to Advertising class to collect pull tabs. In eight weeks, the USI students collected 57,000 pull tabs. They brought them to class in bags, jars, boxes, and tubs—30 containers in all.
Knowing they are making a positive difference in the lives of young people drew both Gayle and Bob to the education field. “Bob and I feel lucky to work in an environment where we watch students develop the skills to become successful adults,” she said. “It’s rewarding to see students accomplish goals and improve their lives.” Members of the President’s Associates make annual gifts of $1,000 or more.

any alumni and friends of the University of Southern Indiana multiply their annual support by taking advantage of employers’ matching gifts programs. Old National Bank supports their employees’ interests by matching up to $250 of their charitable gifts annually to the USI Foundation. “Giving back is an essential corporate value, woven into the very fabric of our business model—a way of ensuring our own success and the success of our communities and our community partners,” notes Danyelle Granger M’06, Old National Bank Foundation program officer. More than 100 employees of Old National Bank support scholarship endowments, Athletics, the Alumni Association, the College of Business, Historic New Harmony, and the USI Annual Fund, among others. As friends of the University, donors who are Old National Bank employees understand how important higher education is to our community.
contributions to educational institutions,” said Old National Bank Foundation President Janet Heldt Baas ’86. “Old National Bank believes strongly in the power of education to help provide the resources for individuals to strengthen and enrich their lives as well as those in the communities of which they’re a part,” Granger said. More than 230 companies offer matching gift programs that benefit the USI Foundation. To find out if your company matches gifts to the University, visit www.matchinggifts.com/usi. In some cases, companies may match gifts of a retiree or spouse of an employee. Take this opportunity to increase your gift to USI. You will receive full credit for a matching gift.

private donations, including from the Bakers, and given to the Foundation in 1983.
Bruce, who owns and operates Newburgh Healthcare and Residential Center, is chair of the USI Foundation Board of Directors. It could be said that the Bakers are the first, or near the first donors to give at a high level to any new initiative from the USI Foundation. They are one of five members who give at the Varsity Club’s Platinum Eagle level, a new level of giving started in 2011.
In addition to their own generosity, the Bakers have introduced many others to USI, including many who have become loyal supporters. “We just take great pride in the University. It’s been a cooperative group of people working together,” said Bruce.
“Our lives would not have been the same without the opportunity to be involved with USI,” said Bruce. “We’ve been given so much by this University. It’s truly our responsibility to give back. We’ve worked very hard at it and it’s been fun.” He has given more than 18 years of service to USI’s Board of Trustees—the longest tenure of any trustee. As a trustee, Bruce has seen the beginning of many building projects at USI, the latest being the new Teaching Theatre which broke ground in fall 2012. “We’ve seen this place grow and we’ve been very proud to be a part of that,” he said. The Bakers have served the University through all three of its presidents. “We’ve had three wonderful presidents,” said Carol. “Each one was the right person at the right time.” Carol has given an equal share of time and talent as a champion of University activities, particularly her involvement as chair of the committee for the University Home, which was built through
10
In 2008, both Bruce and Carol were awarded honorary Doctor of Law degrees for their volunteer leadership, philanthropy, and friendship to the University. They are perpetual members of the USI Foundation President’s Associates and supporters of the Varsity Club and Historic New Harmony. In 2007, they were chosen as the USI Foundation’s first recipients of the Suzanne A. Nicholson Leadership Award. The USI Alumni Association also presented the Bakers with the Special Recognition Award for volunteer service in 1998. They are both active in the community. Bruce is a charter member of the Newburgh Historical Society, a life member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, and serves on the board of WNIN Channel 9. He also served as a lieutenant in the United States Army. Carol graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan University and is a retired kindergarten teacher. She is a longtime member and life director of the USI Foundation Board of Directors and serves on the board of the USI Society for Arts and Humanities.
