“CRUISIN’ AT THE SPEED OF FUN” Volume 23 Issue 4
Record snow slowed us down but didn’t stop our planned activities. Inside, Cruiser Sarojit Malik showed us the simple life in India in the picture above, attended the dinner social, below, and hosted the club for desert afterwards. Brian Soares spoke of his passion for restoring pinball machines, right, at the members meeting, and John Buchanan can hardly control his delight as he sits in a Factory five chassis at their “Moochfest”, rescheduled due to the blizzard of 2013.

Guest Speaker Brian Soares
Don Cole invited a fellow co-worker Brian Soares from Norton, MA who has an interesting hobby and sideline business restoring, refurbishing and repurposing those great old electro-mechanical pinball machines from the 1950’s through mid-1970’s, you know, the ones we used to play way back when. No electronics or computers on these machines just the original relays, switches, solenoids, springs, flippers, lights, bells and heavy polished steel balls in machines you can shake until they tilt. In addition to the slide show presentation showing all the different restoration styles he has restored over the years, he brought along a recent acquisition that was cleaned up and in working condition but not yet restored for everyone to try their hand playing after the presentation. What made Brian’s presentation most interesting than what was expected was the extent he has modified some of these machines with custom graphics for some of his customers. He had pictures of car themed machine that he repurposed for customers; a 1957 Chevy Bel Air custom design built using a 1958 Williams Satellite donor machine and a 24 Hours Le Mans Porsche race cars custom design pinball built using an original 1968 Williams Hayburners 2 as the donor machine. In this case the original miniature horses used to race one another in the original Hayburner themed machine were replaced with miniature Le Mans Porsche race cars racing at the 24 Heures du Mans. After the presentation, everyone was invited to play the working original machine he brought with him. It really brought back memories of when we were kids playing these machines in the amusement park arcades. Bobby C’s ten year old grandson Sean Bordenca, who was very interactive with Sean during his presentation, put down his own electronic gamer to try his hand at tilting one of these great old machines from the past. You can log onto Brian’s website www.gameroompinball.com to see all the different custom pinball machines and cabinet repaints he has done. We want to thank Brian for awakening the child within all of us and I’d be willing to bet there will be a few members that will be contacting him about possibly having a custom designed car themed pinball machine built for their game room. I’m thinking a Happy Days drive-in themed custom pinball machine with hot rods and custom cars.

I drove this Fab 1928 Rolls Royce Phantom 1. A 7.5 liter engine monster. It was earlier the winner of the Cartier show in Delhi and an almost identical car got the best of show in Pebble Beach. You will need to double de clutch to change gears but it can be easily be put on 4 th gear at 10 Mph and pick up without protest.
This 1940 Buick is a right hand drive limo with jump seats made for India. Only 7 are known to survive. My brother restored the car and drove it from Delhi to Mumbai for the Cartier show a distance of 1200 miles with just one stop in Udaipur. He got the prize for the car that came the longest distance on its own power for the show. The flag it is flying is the flag of the high school we both went to in Delhi just for old times sake.

Factory Five Winter Open House “Moochfest” By John Buchanan. At the last moment a quick decision was made to catch the 2013 annual Factory Five Racing Winter Open House, a.k.a. “Moochfest” that was rescheduled to Saturday morning February 16 because of the Blizzard of 2013. When my son Jim and I walked in, the show room was packed while F5R President Dave Smith was describing their latest creation Project 818. Designed to be affordable to build, right or left-hand drive capable, and with components that are readily available in other countries because of the single donor platform used is the 2nd generation Subaru Impreza/WRX product line, wagon and sedan, model years 2002-2007. The 818 is Factory Five’s first “World Car” and, although scheduled availability is mid-June delivery of the under $10,000 kits, 2013 production is already sold out. At 1800 lbs. and using the 2.0 & 2.5 liter WRX Boxer turbo charged flat-four engine in its F5R rear mounted configuration this looks like it will be a blast on the autocross and they believe the hobbyist will be able to build one complete for under $15,000.

Although my prime interest was seeing the 818 up close, the factory tour was filled with all their current product lines, the MK-4 Roadster, ’33 Hot Rod, Type 65 Coupe, GTM Supercar, and the Challenge Car, a competition version of their iconic MK-4 Roadster. Dave was also demonstrating their new laser machining center and the huge robotic CNC fiberglass panel machining center. And at the end of the tour, the boxes of pizza started filling up the tables set up among the factory parts racks, hence earning the tag “Moochfest”.

Dinner Social at the Eagle Brook Restaurant,
Page 11 PP11
by Pat Touhey
On Sunday February 16th, Kumkum and Sarojit Malik hosted 20 + club members at the Eagle Brook Restaurant for some dinner and lively chat. This was their first dinner/social as club members. Despite the slightly bad weather we had a full room. The anticipation of the upcoming cruise night season was evident. All members are itching to break out their rides and do some cruising. I know I can’t wait to take a top down ride, but with recent large snow storms, my late winter rides are nixed. Roads are too wet and too many large craters in the roads this year. After dinner many of us took the short ride back to the Malik’s lovely home. They have some very beautiful and unusual decorative art and furniture pieces from India. They have a lovely billiards room. I didn’t get a chance to play. Sarojit had a very nice little Men Den in his lower level with great pictures of some classic automobiles in India that he had a hand restoring and great stories that go with them (see page 5). At the end of the evening, State Rep and good friend and neighbor of the Maliks, Daniel Winslow, stopped by for a quick drink and give a little campaign speech to the members that were still there. Dan Winslow is running in the special election to replace Sen. John Kerry. Thank you for a great evening.
