Past Presidential Emissions By Ed Beatty At the December 18 Monthly Meeting clubmembers voted in a new slate of officers for 2019. The term for officers is for 2 years with the President & Vice President being limited to two consecutive terms. Mark Crichton takes over as President on January 1, 2019 with Larry Nyborn as his Vice President, a position Larry has held before including also three stints as club President. Kevin Rushlow has moved up from his Assistant Treasurer role to become the club Treasurer with Rich Armando becoming his Assistant. Meanwhile former Treasurer Wayne Lestan will become care taker and administrator of the club’s by-laws after handling the club’s financial matters for the past six years and bringing the club’s ledger book onto the Quick Books platform. Secretary Patrick Touhey, who has transitioned the Secretary’s job from notebook and pen to laptop has resigned that position he has held for the past four years and former Assistant Secretary Lesley Corda is coming back to take on that job. These two vital positions, Treasurer and Secretary, have become more complex as the club has grown and with computerized data bases now the norm for handling our club business and communications it becomes important to have coverage and backup when needed with capable assistants which will be appointed at the January 8, 2019 business meeting. With my tenure as President for this past year ending, I’m sure administering the club will be in capable hands in 2019. I have to thank my Vice President who has had to step in and take over for me these past two months and she has done an admirable job. Zeke Sawayer volunteered to become the New Member coordinator, a role that Don Cole has assumed for over 10 years. And Wayne, who has not lost one penny of club money for that past six years, thank you for ushering the club’s ledger into the computer age along with your diligent service throughout. We look forward to your next role, shepherding the club’s By-Laws that Roy Rossman has carefully and diligently handled for more than 10 years. Thank you Patrick for also bringing the Secretary’s job into the computer age as well and by keeping club members notified of upcoming events using the Wild Apricot platform. As for me, I plan to become more active in the motorcycle racing circuit in 2019.

Daytona Turkey Run By John Buchanan

The 45th Annual Daytona Turkey Run has become an annual ritual for club members that do not have any Thanksgiving week plans or are snow birds in Florida during that weekend. Bob and June Smith who have been attending the Turkey Run for twenty years when they had a winter home in Daytona, and who would make arrangements for these past annual Thursday Thanksgiving dinner gatherings, sold their Daytona digs last year and stayed back home in Massachusetts for the first time this year. That didn’t stop the rest of us though from attending what is arguable one of the biggest combined car show & swap meets in the country. Ralph Chadsey & Bob Wood drove Bill Ruel’s Corvette down to St. Petersburg where he winters, normally a two day drive that took three this year due to tire problems. Jack Lane drives over from his Bonita Springs condo and I fly down from Providence. We all met for Thanksgiving dinner at Duff’s Buffet in Belaire Plaza this year enjoying the Thursday through Saturday Turkey Run and following cruise nights at the new Daytona One parking lots across from the Speedway and their new Bass Pro Shops. Police were enforcing the NO CRUISE parking at Belaire Plaza for the first time in over forty years. However I think new location is actually better because it can accommodate over a thousand cruise cars as well as spectator parking. Fred Tierney drove up from his Deland winter digs on Saturday, the heaviest attendance day at the Turkey Run which sees more than 6,000, classic, vintage, muscle, hot rods and race cars for show and sale in addition to a massive swap meet that attracts over 15,000 spectators. If any club members want to attend the 2019 Fall Turkey Run, contact any of the club regulars for suggestions on travel or accommodations planning.

December Monthly Meeting By John Buchanan

Year End January 18 Member: The 2018 year end monthly meeting on January 18 at the Bass Pro Shops Conservation Room had four notable action items on outgoing Vice President Diane Thornton’s agenda: 1. V.P. Diane Thornton presented a check for $2,500 to Tony Marano, Director of Volunteer Services at the Wrentham Development Center. Tony noted that 100% of this donation funds the needs of the 250 residents with additional items and activities not provided by state funding. The proceeds are from the 50-50 drawings held at our club’s Bass Pro Shops cruises coordinated by Frank Bryant. 2. Massachusetts Association of Auto (MAAC) Club President William Ellis was the meeting guest speaker who reviewed the legislative efforts that MAAC has been actively pursuing during the 190th General Court which ends December 31. William also filled out a 2019 Mass Cruisers member application while at the meeting.

3. The MAIN EVENT, voting for the 2019 slate of officers was unanimous; President - Mark Crichton, Vice President - Larry Nyborn, Treasurer – Kevin Rushlow, Secretary – Lesley Corda-Majeski.

4. Fred Tierney floated two suggested annual club events for April 27 Beach Boys Tribute – SAIL ON at the Norwood Theater preceded with a buffet at the Hibachi Steak House. The Olde Colonial Café adjacent to the Norwood Theater was booked for a wedding on that date which is why the Hibachi Steak House was looked into. The other proposal was to have a catered weekend afternoon cruise event at the Newport Car Museum in Portsmouth, R.I.. A show of hands favored doing the Newport Car Museum and will be further discussed and decided at the January Business Meeting.

CRUZIN Around By John Buchanan

Past President Ed Beatty brought back some pictures that he took at the Volvo Museum in Goteborg Sweden. This museum is not typically found on our bucket lists let alone getting the opportunity to visit Sweden, but where Ed’s wife Marie still has family in Sweden, the Beatty’s are frequent fliers to the land of the Vikings when vacation time rolls around. . What makes this museum worthwhile visiting is that it is not just about the familiar Volvo cars from the 50’s and ‘60’s that we see on our U.S.A. roads and which can date back to the late 1920’s, it also is home to displays of Volvo construction equipment, buses, Penta marine and ocean racing. Of the more than dozen photos Ed provided, there are four notable ones worth posting here; the first 1 0f 10 prototypes model 1926 Volvo O V4, the King of Sweden’s 1937 Volvo PV52, the Prototype sporty P1800, the same model which Don Cole owns and drives to our cruise nights, and a full scale sized Lego Volvo XC90. A little bit of trivia: The name Volvo is from the Latin verb volvere which means to roll. The name VOLVO (I roll) was trademarked in 1915 by SKF bearings for their new series of ball bearings to be produced for the automotive industry. Although VOLVO bearings never went into full production, the SKF Board approved using the VOLVO tradename in 1926 for their new financially supported venture to manufacture automobiles.

Christmas, Hanukkah. Kwanza Party By John Buchanan

Mark Crichton decided to hold off heading down to Florida in his motor home early this year and was able to host the club’s annual Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza Holiday Party at his Foxboro home again after a two year hiatus. And a great time it was. Mark prepared the turkey and roast beast while members contributed appetizers, side dishes and desserts, and there was a ton of food for everyone to enjoy. Mark really got into the Christmas spirit this year by greeting everyone in his new dapper Santa Claus suit. Not the traditional red outfit associated those mall Santa’s wear, but one that looks like it was custom tailored at Men’s Warehouse. Mark also wanted to reinstitute the Yankee Gift Swap this year and it was also a hit. John Nunez drew the highest number and had the pick of the gifts at the end, while Wendy Wilhelm drew the biggest laughs when she unwrapped and displayed “Jingle Jugs”, the singing musical rack you can hang in your man cave or garage. Needless to say, Wendy didn’t keep that awesome gift and promptly swapped it for something a bit more, shall we say, less man cave-ish. It was great to get together and celebrate the holiday season with some good food, conversation and catching up on everyone’s winter projects and plans as well as having a few laughs in the process.
