The May 2, 2013 Cruise winner selection, sponsored by Accurate Automotive & Performance of Hyde Park, Boston was made by Cindy Chisholm from the Bass Pro Shops Receiving Dept. She loves Corvettes and cruise night regular Gordon White’s sharp looking 1958 silver model that was sporting contrasting white bodyside coves really hit the mark. These cove styled Corvettes, which debuted in 1956 and continued through 1963, are distinctive and highly prized collector models. 1958 was the first year for the four headlight version of this classic body style. Seekonk Speedway Show and Go The 3rd Annual Seekonk Speedway Show & Go Car Show enjoyed a beautiful sunny but chilly Saturday ahead of its opening race season that began on Sunday. John Buchanan’s video of the show: http://vimeo.com/65986923
Over 200 show cars registered for the car show portion of the day-long events that included free spectator admission to the car show, test & tune races on the Speedway track during the car show and the show car 100 foot burnout drag races at 1 pm ahead of the 2:00 PM. award presentations by D.J.
Bruce Palmer. The Mass Cruisers handled the setup for show car parking and judging for the Top 16 Awards with the Best of Show Award was presented to Al G.’s 1970 Shelby GT 500.

Pronyne Motorsports Museum Tour In a bit of reverse order happening, our May general meeting guest speakers, Ric Mariscal, Curator of the Pronyne Motorsports Museum in Pawtucket, R.I. and his coconspirator in this venture, R.A. Silvia, Auto Racing Historian, came after our club’s Saturday May 18 tour of their museum which is the repository of Rhode Island and southern New England circle track racing historical artifacts, memorabilia, race cars and documents including rare videotaped footage of races taken at many of the now defunct race tracks. Ric, who was a former race car driver, builder and car owner noted in his talk that he became committed to saving these fast disappearing race history’s artifacts that families of former New England race legends had no place to keep them. Ater Bugs Stevens let him get behind the wheel to drive Lenny Boehler’s #3 “Ole Blue” that saw many winning drivers behind the wheel including Fred DeSarro, Bugs Stevens, Leo Cleary and Ron Bouchard, preserving these cars and memorabilia became his life’s mission. That led him to join with R.A. “Bob” Silvia to create a private museum to house their growing collections. Ric described how the museum evolved and its mission, “Where Racing History Repeats Itself” and what it houses while Bob gave us the history of the 31 race tracks that existed in our local area conducting auto race events of all types in past years. Today, Seekonk Speedway, the Action Track of the East”, is the last remaining local track that continues to provide weekend thrills for families and racers alike. The Saturday tour of the museum’s two story building at 8 Cleveland St. saw a half dozen Mass Cruisers cruise cars meet at the I-95 weigh station area in South Attleboro to cruise over to the museum and park in the Doherty’s Irish Pub parking lot, a stone’s throw off U.S. Route 1 in Pawtucket, where we were warmly greeted by the Pub’s staff. The short walk over to the museum for a two hour tour of the two story building’s display rooms was followed by an excellent burger & beer lunch back at R.I.’s Best Pub. Following lunch, it was back to our cars and a photo shoot of our cars individually parked in front of the iconic 1941 Modern Diner a half block away on East. St. Touring the museum is by appointment only or when Ric or Bob are there during their regularly scheduled maintenance and archiving times; Mon. & Wed. 6-9 pm and on weekends 11 am – 3 pm when they are not attending races or scheduled shows and events like the upcoming 9 th Annual Norwood Arena Reunion on Sunday June 2 at Bezema Motors on U.S. Route 1. Call ahead 401-447-4202 to be sure they will be open. Ric & Bob made an open invitation for members to come over to hang out and enjoy the collections or view their extensive video library. The club made a donation to the museum which is a 501c-3 charity and they appreciate any donations that are made to help pay the expenses for maintaining the building and collections until a patron angel comes along to provide a more secure and better facility that can be open more accessible to the general public. They are also looking for volunteer plumbing and electrician trade labor to help them upgrade these services.

May 16, 2013 Cruise Winner Our Thursday May 16 Cruise was this spring’s weather winner with bright sunshine, temperatures in the low 80’s and, with the sun shining on the bright Lamborghini orange paint and ghost flames of Daniel Disco’s 1951 Mercury four door lead sled, the Bass Pro Shops picked it to receive the Accurate Automotive & Performance sponsored cruise night plaque. This Florida based car was a previous winner in June of 2011 and we usually try to avoid repeat selections by trying to follow a minimum two-year gap for repeat selections, but with over 1500 cars to choose from, this particular car always turns heads and is hard to resist not putting it on their favorite cruiser. This Mercury is also very unique being a four door model with the rear doors opening suicide style. The tan leather interior seating was custom fitted and restored from two different 1964 Thunderbirds. Its original flathead engine was blown shortly after the previous owner bought it in Florida and the next owner started new engine and drive train modifications around a limited edition Edelbrock signature series 460 HP GM “ZZ383” engine (99 of 250) connected to a 700 R4 overdrive tranny. The Merc also sports period classic custom features like the ’55 DeSoto grille, ’57 Packard Taillights, ’57 Buick hubcaps in the rear, ’57 Cadillac caps up front and polished stainless side lake pipes. Ridetech air ride suspension and a unique a/c setup directing cold air through roof vents make this one cool riding cruiser on those hot summer days. Unfortunately, this is not Dan’s favorite among his many Ford classic automobiles he owns in Florida, so there was a reasonably priced $60,000 FOR SALE sign inside the car with his cell number which allowed me to track him and his family down riding the shuttle over to Skipjack’s in the North Marketplace for dinner to tell him his car was selected as the cruise night winner, but too late for him to take advantage of the Blue Fin Lounge free dinner that was included along with winning plaque.
