Most area cruises wrap up their cruise dates in September but we still have our Oct. 11 & 25 cruises to look forward to before we wrap up another successful run for 2018. There are still plenty of weekend events to put on your show calendars for October too. Locally, one of our cruise sponsors, Briggs Nursery on Rte. 152 in North Attleborough has their annual Octoberfest Car Show on Saturday Oct. 7 which is the Columbus Day Weekend this year. For our weekend cruisers there is the annual multi-club US Route 6 Cruise weekend to Provincetown. This year the cruise destination is back to the original Province Lands Visitor Center right off Route 6 and a new host hotel, the Surfside Inn for the overnighters. The following weekend there is the Gathering of the Faithful in Middleboro on October 20 and the CT Ty-Rods annual swap meet at the Stafford Springs speedway. We will be joining with all the other Southern New England Car Clubs for an end of season cruise to the Wright’s Chicken Farm gathering in Harrisville, R.I. before we turn back our clocks an hour. A 12:30 PM seating is schedules. There is a group reservation limit of 36 so Diane Thorton needs the headcount. As we head into the fall and winter season, we are in need of guest speakers for our monthly general meetings at the Bass Pro Shops. Let me know if you have someone in mind so we can put them on the calendar.

CRUISE AWARD PLAQUE SPONSOR: Vintage Motorsports; 86 Washington St. (Rte. 16) in Holliston, MA (Neil Childress & Greg Pellegrino) CRUISE WINNER GIFT CERTIFICATES: 1. Patriot Place PLAY ACTION PASS – 2 adult admissions ($44 value) Your choice of the following entertainment venues: · The Hall at Patriot Place · Patriot Place Showcase Cinema · Patriot Place Splitsville Luxury Lanes · 5 WITS Immersive Adventure @ Patriot Place 2. Blue Fin Lounge in Bass Pro Shops – Entrees for 2 (excludes alcohol) 3. Uncle Buck’s Fudge Shop in Bass Pro Shops – Fudge Sampler 4 Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt @ Patriot Place – Frozen Yogurt Cake ($30 value) VEHICLE: 1957 Ford Custom Business Coupe OWNER: John Viera, Taunton, MA John spent 3 ½ years personally restoring his rare plain-Jane looking factory correct Flame Red 1957 Ford Custom Business Coupe. Its original owner was a Dutch Master salesman in Oregon and his ’57 was one of 500 hundred original business coupes ordered by the Harvester Cigar Company. The unique featured option which makes this particular Ford rare is the 312 cu. in. 285 HP Power Kit dealer optioned power plant. This hot Ford was built with and Iski cam, dual Holley 4000’s and Thunderbird valve covers, a $312 option in 1957 that will cost you $12,000 today if you can find one. It also has the Borg Warner T-85 3 speed tranny with overdrive and 3:70 rear end ratio for those fast long haul Oregon road trips between cigar emporiums. Of the total number of 6,888 business coupes built in 1957, 1,646 were with V8’s and John’s coupe is one of 50 known survivors. With no rear seat, no rear window regulators and normally deleted items like the radio, we suspect these sparsely optioned hot V8 coupes were coveted by drag and circle track racers back in the day which would account for their rarity. They were also popular with the Alabama State Police and Cape Cod stationed State Police. John’s plan is to begin displaying the coupe at major Ford events and we were happy to have a first peek at this beautifully restored example of what salesmen of the 1940’s and 50’s were given to sell their wares from store to store back in the day, unlike today when the Postal, UPS, Fed Ex, or Amazon trucks are making overnight deliveries to your front steps, soon to be replaced by delivery drones..

Steve Paul bought his 1969 Camaro RS-SS as a birthday present for himself back in 2013. He then began an intensive rebuild transforming this one year sporty styled performance redesign of the first generation Camaro’s into a more stylish recreational auto cross performer that he completed on his 2015 birthday, exactly two years to the day. From the carbon fiber ground effects front lip to the shaved and welded rear bumper, there isn’t an area that escape Steve’s performance and styling makeover. The engine is a Chevy Performance LS376/525 HP 6.2L with aluminum heads backed up with a Borg-Warner T56 six speed tranny and Ford 9 inch rear sporting 3:90 gears. The wheels are ForgeLine ZX3 custom three-piece forged aluminum alloy street version race wheels; front, 18” x 9”; 19” x 12” rear shod with Toyo PROXES 4 Plus all-weather performance tires. The exterior body was shaved all around then covered in a TungstenTitanium Metallic finish sporting ghost SS stripes in the rear. The interior cabin includes Dakota Digital instruments and seating includes GTO buckets seat in the rear and ”Ricaro style” buckets up front all covered in charcoal leather sewn with striking red that makes it stand out. Steve made the custom side panels to match. We’ve seen and photographed Steve’s Camaro a number of times at our cruise and previously escaped being picked for the Vintage Motorsports sponsored cruise award. Not tonight. Our judging panel caught up with him and was also able to present Steve with the complimentary gift certificate pack that includes a pair of adult Patriot Place Play Action Passes, two entrees at the Blue Fin Lounge, a Menchie’s Patriot Place frozen yogurt cake and fudge sampler from Uncle Buck’s inside the Bass Pro Shops.

The 25th Annual Old Orchard Beach Car Show on Sept. 14 – 16 enjoyed the largest turnout ever thanks to perfect weather and Dennis Gage’s presence filming upcoming episodes for his weekly My Classic Car programs on Velocity. We again headquartered at the Edgewater hotel and enjoyed the Friday afternoon lunch at the Brunswick and Saturday night dinner with 26 members and guests at the Boardwalk Grille in nearby Ocean Park. As far as trophy winners this year, only John Buchanan’s ’61 Impala took home a 2nd place in the GM Cars of the “60’s class. Of course there is the return cruise home down historic U.S. Route 1 on Sunday to Motorland and the Arundel Flea Market, ice cream at Big Daddy’s and When Pig’s Fly Pizzeria & bakery in Kittery to stock up on artisan breads. Thanks to Lou Valentine and Steve Huntington for pulling off another great weekend event. The September 22/23 car show scene for club members was split between the 3rd Annual Red Devils Throw Down at the American Legion in Wrentham and the Middletown Rotary car show at Fort Adams in Newport where Steve Vining reported that Daz Alberty took a first in Class with his ’55 Chevy while he brought home a 2nd place trophy in his Class.
