Mass Cruisers Auto Club Crusin’ at the speed of fun
August was Showtime for the Mass Cruisers
It got crazy in August for our clubmembers this year with our events schedule filled with the annual Mass Cruisers invitation night at Seekonk Speedway on Saturday the 12th, our annual Goodie Bag Stuffing BBQ party on Sunday the 13th, monthly member meeting on the 15th, the Thursday Bass Pro Shops cruise on the 17th, the Wrentham Fairgrounds Show Field set up on Saturday the 19th, our 26th Annual AutoFest Car Show at the Wrentham Development Center Fairgrounds on the 20th and the rescheduled Bass Pro Shops Cruise on Thursday the 24th then helping the South Attleboro Lions Club with show car classing and judging for their 22nd Annual Car Show at the LaSalette Shrine. Hopefully the three week hiatus ahead of our September 14 Bass Pro Shops Cruise will allow us the time to restore and refresh and get back in full swing for the remaining two fall months of cruising before packing it in for our winter projects. A special four page supplement to this newsletter has the details and photos of our successful 26th Annual AutoFest Car Show. Since moving the car show to the Wrentham Development Center back in 2012, we experimented with different days, Saturday or Sunday, and formats to the point that our annual show has now differentiated itself from other car shows that makes it fun for the entire family to enjoy and participate in our hobby. If you are a regular attendee of our events, we want to thank you for participating with us in a hobby and pastime that preserves and encourages preservation of the automotive hobby.

I want to thank our Car Show Director Richie Armando for once again organizing and directing our 26th Annual AutoFest Car Show at the Wrentham Fairgrounds on Sunday August 20. Mother nature also cooperated by providing us delivering a nice warm summer day. We were stretched thin this year due to some unfortunate wounded key contributors, but when one member went down another stepped up to take on their job as when Zeke Sawayer, who designs and manages the show field layout for us each year, including coordinating the flea market vendors, tore the Achilles tendon on his already injured foot requiring surgery. Mark Creighton stepped up to fill his shoes to implement the new vendor layout that brings show cars and vendor displays closer together. Fortunately Mark has big feet. We also have a work Saturday BBQ the week before our show at Rick & Paula Lawlor’s Walpole home, well it’s actually in their garage and driveway, setting up a production line environment to fill all those Goodie Bags with more stuff than any other car show goodie bags typically provide. Our goodie bags are always bigger than every one else's thanks to Rick’s efforts that begin anew shortly after the car show ends each year. Rick & Paul also manage the special Goodie Bag drawings at the show. Other team captains include Bruce Berry’s team taking care of separating the show cars, vendors and spectators at the entrance gate and directing them to the registration table manned by former Club Treasurer Jean Waite’s team while current Treasurer Wayne Lestan keeps the cash flow straight. Show car drivers get their goodie bags and the ladies a fresh rose at the registration table. The show car parking, captained by Paul Worsley and his team, directed the cars to larger spaces which provided plenty of space between cars. Advanced reserved club parking spaces were also accommodated this year for the first time. The club information table where event tee shirts, 50-50 drawing tickets and event questions can be answered was captained by Holly Light with John handling the annual ticket sales for the September drawing . The food vendor coordination is handled by Bob Hines who also packs one of his Robert’s Automotive vans with all the show stuff we need to haul to the show and this year for the first time coordinated and led the judging for the new Vocational Trade School engine build competition. Mike and Lorna Rabbitt continue to set up, organize and run the ever popular valve cover racing competition. Lou Valentine coordinated the Antique Fire Apparatus parade and their show field display area with the Wrentham Fire Chief James McMorrow. And for all those “Lost in Space” TV fans, Zeke also invited the replica space chariot built by John Antonelli’s Elevator Interior Design team to do some planet roving at the show. The show car judging teams were led again by Mark Lite and for the first time I stepped in to identify my Presidential Picks to be parked in a special area from which many of the superlative awards, including the Best of Show and Top 100 Award selections were made. The RTS Expo Club along with Harry’s Hobbies & Collectables shop in Norton hosted a model car build table for kids attending our show. And, as always, the kids got a hot wheels collectable car and their own show ballots to vote for their favorite vehicle at the show. Frank Bryant coordinated the two 50-50 drawings, the proceeds of which go to support the Wrentham Development Center ’s resident programs not covered by State funding. I want to thank all of our club members who have worked very hard setting up, working the day of the show and then picking up and packing everything away after the show. We work hard to put on an event that show car owners, spectators and their families can enjoy. I hope that we have at least met everyone’s expectations and hopefully exceeded them this year with all the new additions and changes, many which were the result of club member and show car participant input. At the following Thursday August 24 cruise I along with other club members were getting rave reviews for this year’s AutoFest so all of your hard work has paid off with satisfied car owners and vendors. Last but not least are all our sponsors that advertise in the 36 Page Program booklet which allow us to provide this show each year. Our Major Sponsors, Central Group of Norwood & Taunton, Norfolk Power Equipment in Wrentham, Carver & Burrilville, RI, Pope Insurance in Plainville and Median Media that provides all our cruise and car show print media as always are the foundation for all of our sponsors that provide the awards distributed to the best show cars attending the AutoFest. Drop us a line with your comments, good or bad, about this year’s show. We listen and discuss all suggestions, looking for ways to improve our show each year. EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to the number of August club activities and event articles, this newsletter issue was increased by four pages to accommodate the AutoFest Car Show results & photos and the monthly Events & CRUIZN Massachusetts pages were not included. 1930 Ford 4 Window Coupe Street Rod The August 3 winner of the Vintage Motorsports sponsored cruise night award plaque is another example of a car that was almost picked once before, and in this case, it happened to be parked next to an equally nice 1936 Ford Convertible Coupe at the June 8 cruise that was selected. However car owner Biaggio Micheletti from Johnston, R.I. was spotted driving into the cruise with his “old school look” 1930 Ford street rod with the flat head V8 sporting polished H & H heads and Zoomie open headers. Recognizing and honoring the car by our judges would not be missed again. Of course, it might also help if you park next to a beater instead an equally high quality built or restored vehicle. What struck me about this particular ‘31 street rod was what happened to many of us old timers that wanted a Deuce Coupe or Roadster but couldn’t afford one at the time, was to get a Model A beater and work it until it looks like a Deuce Coupe. And that was accomplished by putting the body on a ’32 frame and attaching a ’32 radiator grill shell on the front. Only the purist would notice the subtle differences. That’s what was done last year when the original Model A frame was replaced with a 1932 frame lowering the body to give it a classic ‘32 Hi Boy stance. One big giveaway is the Model A doors overlap the body while the ‘32 doors are flush . None of that really takes away from the classic look of a period street rod, particularly when it has a
Henry Ford flathead motor with all the right goodies sitting in the open engine bay and red painted steely wheels carrying classic white wall tires. August 3 Cruise video: https://vimeo.com/249661028 (Vining)

Zip Trip to Norfolk, MA By Diane Thornton
Boston’s Fox 25 Morning Show has been visiting towns all over Massachusetts for years now. During the summer their Morning Team “zips” to a new Zip Code on Fridays doing their morning news broadcast from that town. The broadcasts typically are from a scenic center or point of interest. The morning duo usually have historical facts about the town that they share; or town departments (like Fire, Police or Recreation) come forward with news; or notable town individuals are interviewed – newsy, fun facts for the morning. Almost a dozen Mass Cruiser members rallied before 6:00 AM at our Norfolk clubhouse and cruised the half mile to the Town Hill and crash their party. The general thinking was “since our club is based in Norfolk, maybe we can park together at the broadcast area and catch some attention for the upcoming 26th Annual AutoFest Car Show.” After circling the Town Hill multiple times and being directed to “only park in marked spaces”, the efforts to maintain the cars in a group were abandoned. Plan B was an armada of Yellow Shirts carrying our Auto Show signs that converged upon the green – mostly looking for the free coffee at that point! As Fox 25 morning celebrities settled into their tented broadcast area, they chatted with several of the Cruisers and ended up talking up the AutoFest Car Show during the next broadcast! All the cruisers in attendance created a yellow shirted backdrop to the scene – holding the Auto Show signs – and one dog! Quite a show! In the end: lots of fun and MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Race of the Century in Stowe, MA
By Diane Thornton; Pics by Wayne Lestan
Race of the Century! That was the cry from the grass air field in Stow, MA owned by the Collings Foundation. Transportation technologies from the last 100 years were promised to be presented in an extraordinary line up of races. A last-minute jaunt out to Stow became a wonderful day exploring the collections at the Collings Foundation and watching the races for the afternoon! Despite this event being mentioned at earlier Mass Cruiser meetings, a cruise out to Stow was not taken up and was considered dropped. Then, a flurry of emails began and a few earlybirds who read the insanely early group email jumped in their cars and drove together down Route 27 to the intended destination! Arrival of the three classic cars garnered some primo parking – as the ticket-takers immediately appreciated the older era of the Cruiser’s cars…(let’s not forget they’re working at a hidden jewel of historical preservation). The first order of business for Wayne Lestan, John Ricker, and Diane Thornton was to find out what all the noise was about from behind the buildings! Up above there was a plane doing loops over us! Behind the building was an air field with two biplanes revving up. Parked along the air field were several very old cars and a stagecoach! At that level the field entrance to a monstrous “hanger” with aircraft and various military equipment loomed large. Other levels of the hanger were displaying coaches, carriages, race cars and Al Capone’s Cadillac! Another smaller building offered a chance to look at some beautifully restored vintage automobiles along with hats and dresses from “back in the day”. At 1 PM the races started up. The idea behind the weekend long event at the Collings Foundation, was to offer a live experience of the evolution of automobiles/transportation from the early 1900s, mostly. The speaker, Hunter Chaney, was engaging, and the excitement around the race line-ups was fanned with lighthearted instigation until the races were started. The opportunity was unforgettable: to see first-hand a stagecoach racing a bicycle and a man on foot; or a horse and rider racing a Stanley Steamer; or a biplane racing a homemade sprint car! History in action! After the races, the Cruiser group managed to get their picture taken with a vintage race car! The subsequent conversation with an aircraft restoration expert, Joe, was also memorable. A wealth of knowledge, mostly dealing with aircraft, he answered questions and chatted for almost an hour. At the end of the day, these three Cruisers met another Cruiser who had been there all day – Bob Okerholm! A picture was taken to commemorate the foursome at an event that will likely be repeated next year! The Collings Foundation is open again in October for a “living history” portrayal using military equipment of all kinds. On October 7 @ 8:30 am - October 8 @ 4:30 pm a Battle for The Airfield WWII Re enactment will engage whoever attends. Visit collingsfoundation.org for more information. Anyone interested in an October cruise to Stow?

NSRA Nationals in Louisville My Bucket List loomed large when Bruce Berry, who had attended the NSRA Nationals previously, asked if any club members were interested in attending the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in August 2017. I was in so I registered my ’31 Dodge Street Rod April shortly after having surgery. Mike Rabbitt & co-pilot Rick Lawlor also signed. Jack Lane signed on as my co-pilot and friend of the club Joe Ouellette and his girlfriend Carol signed on so we had four cars that would cruise down to Louisville and back. Hotel reservations were made at the Hilton Garden Inn Northeast in Louisville. The #1 piston in my ‘31’s 360 V8 burned out scoring the cylinder wall with two weeks to goo so my plan B ‘61 Impala was put into service then Jack Lane called and said he was having some health issue with his meds and had to back out, so we were all set with seven in four cars . Bruce had Rose Sawayer plot the drive to Louisville via a northern route and the return drive back via a Southern Route with AAA Trip Tik maps. This included a side trip to the National Corvette Museum on the last day. The drive to Louisville was not uneventful when one of Joe Ouellette's rear Coker radial tire steel belts started to come apart on the New York Thruway resulting in an emergency stop and swapping with the spare. We made our first night stopover in Ohio and then made the run to the Kentucky Fairgrounds It was my first trip to the Nationals and I was blown away by the participation of all the vendors that for years would tempt my spending when thumbing through their ads in Street Rodder and Hot Rod magazines. Being able to see first hand the differences of Dakota Digitals analog dash lighting displays, as an example, persuaded me to change my mind about which color I want to order for my annual Christmas gift to my ’61 Impala, “Judy’s Dream” I didn’t forget the ’31 Dodge “Diamond Lil” either, She’ll be getting a new Jasper performance 360 V8 after going over the build detail with their sales tech at the show and I found a pair of fog light brackets from Affordable Street Rods for her. Bruce Berry bought a center console for his ‘54 Chevy Sedan Delivery and Joe Ouellette ordered a set of new wide whites from Diamondback to be delivered to his front door. Oh yes, then there’s the 11,000 hot rods & customs to drool over when roaming through the Fairgrounds. A side trip south to see the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green on Sunday turned out to be a bonus. They have turned the 2014 “Sinkhole Disaster” that swallowed up 8 of their vintage Corvettes into one of the most interesting displays and educational programs on how sinkholes form that make that make the visit worthwhile.

August 17 Cruise Winner 1950 Ford F1 Pickup Truck
Bob Riddoch's father Bill, who was a mechanic at Rodman Ford, found a 1950 Ford pickup truck in a New Hampshire barn 14 years ago and brought it back home to Norfolk to restore it. He built a barn and put in a lift to do the restoration. Bill completed the restoration in 2008 then unfortunately passed in 2010. Bob said no one else in the family wanted the truck so he took out to California with him for four years before returning back home in Norfolk. Except for the Corvette Torch Red paint and brown Naugahyde upholstered interior, the truck was restored to original condition retaining the original Ford 60 V8, non-synchromesh tranny, vacuum wipers and 6-volt electrical system. Well almost original. California required the truck have two windshield wipers and not the single wiper it originally came with so Bob had to add a second wiper to pass the CA inspection. Vintage pickup trucks are a popular and practical way to get back into the old car hobby when you consider that a new 2017 Ford F150 costs north of $35,000 and late model used trucks about half that and more. That is how I got back into the hobby and the wife didn’t object at the time because it didn’t cost as much as a late model used truck and it still had practical uses. Of course, turning an antique beater into a show room condition cruiser like Bob’s 1950 F1 can put a big dent in your wallet and the practical use excuse disappears when Antique plates are attached and that now perfect truck bed needs to be protected and not abused like most trucks are. But, try it, you might like it.

Annual Seekonk Speedway VIP Nite By John Buchanan
Our Mass Cruisers Auto Club hosts Seekonk Speedway’s car show portion of their popular opening weekend Show & Go Saturday event in April We’ve been fortunate with enjoying good weather since these events started in . This year it rained on Saturday and the event was cancelled. However, the tradition of inviting our club members for a VIP nite at the track was not and Saturday August 12 we were feted during the opening “salute to the flag” and the previous week’s class winners ceremonies by driving our cars through the pit area and onto the track for a few laps, followed by reserved seating in the VIP pavilion between turns 1 & 2 to enjoy an evening of racing and food. The Mass Cruisers are happy to be a part of helping Ed St. Germain keep the “Action Track of the East” racing tradition alive and want to thank him for his continuing hospitality to our club and its members with this annual VIP invitation.

1967 Plymouth Satellite Pro Street Matt Lewis from East Bridgewater has owned his 1967 Plymouth Satellite for 20 years that was a 10 year restoration and build to bring it to its current Pro Street level. The 1967 Mopar B bodied Plymouth Belvedere GTX along with its cousin Dodge Coronet R/T was in its final design year cycle at Chrysler in 1967 due to slowing sales against the Pontiac GTO & Firebirds, Buick Grand Sport, Chevy Super Sport & Camaros and Ford Mustangs. But they were still popular with drag racers with their big block 440 cu. in. V8 engines. Although Matt’s Satellite was built with a Chassis Engineering Roll Cage and tubbed for those meaty 28 x 12.00 R15 LT Mickey
Thompson Sportsman S/R radials riding on Center Line wheels, he doesn’t hit the drag strip but cruises with her regularly. I did find a picture of him driving into our Bass Pro Shops cruise back in April 2015 so he, along
with his other Lug Nuts Car Club buddies are regular cruise attendees at Patriot Place. This Mopar 440 V8 was bored 0.030 over and topped with two 4 bbl carbs. The 727 tranny is equipped with a Gear Vendors Overdrive unit and B & M floor shifter all linked to a strong Mopar 8 ¾ rear end which helps for cruising. Although not original to 1967, the Metallic Bright Platinum paint is a Chrysler color and the front bucket seats are from a 1965 Dodge, substitutions done in typical Mopar hot rodding fashion. Matt’s selection at this 2017 cruise is another example where picking the Bass Pro Shops cruiser of the night from the many very nice show and performance vehicles that attend every other week can take several years before getting this deserved recognition.
