Konyn Awarded Collinsworth Award

Kylie Konyn, Escondido, Calif., has been named the top winner of the National Judi Collinsworth Outstanding Junior Exhibitor Memorial Scholarship awarded by Holstein Association USA.

A sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she will apply the $1,000 towards her studies in dairy science and agriculture business management.

She would like to continue her education to obtain an advanced degree in dairy genetics or nutrition.

At the UWMadison, she is involved in the Badger Dairy Club, Collegiate Farm Bureau, and the Association of Women in Agriculture. She also is an undergraduate research assistant.

Kylie is equally well known in Jersey junior circles. She was crowned National Jersey Queen in 2021 and attended Jersey Youth Academy. She placed 10th in the 2021 National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest. She is a nine-year junior member of the AJCA and has served as a president of the California Junior Jersey Cattle Association for three years.

USDA Extends Deadline for DMC

USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) has extended the registration and coverage deadline for the Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program to January 31, 2023. The previous deadline was December 9, 2022.

DMC payments are triggered when the difference between the all-milk price and the average feed price falls below the producer-selected margin trigger, ranging from $4.00 to $9.50 (Tier 1) and $4.00 to $8.00 (Tier 2), calculated monthly.

“With input costs at record highs and early projections showing possible DMC payments for the first eight months of 2023, it is imperative that producers have time to consider their coverage needs and make choices that best fit their operations and

risk-management plans,” noted National Milk Producers Federation President and CEO Jim Mulhern.

While DMC is designed to promote stable revenues and protect against financial catastrophe for small and medium-sized producers, other options including the Dairy Revenue Protection (DRP) program and the Livestock Gross Margin for Dairy Producers (LGM-Dairy). Both were revamped in the 2018 Farm Bill and provide important and effective risk management.

Dairy farmers who did not sign up for supplemental DMC coverage in 2022 (based on updated production levels) will have another opportunity to sign up this year. These producers should complete their supplemental DMC enrollment before enrolling in 2023 DMC.

Gifts Made to Support Research and Youth Funds

Gifts in support of Jersey-specific research and Jersey youth development funds have been received through November 22, 2022.

A donation to AJCC Research Foundation was made in memory of Duane Wickstrom by Richard and Sharon Clauss, Hilmar, Calif.

Contributions were made to the Russell-Malnati and the William A. Russell Memorial Scholarship funds by Marilyn L. Malnati, Deforest, Ga.

Flavor and Health Key to Dairy Brand Marketing in 2023

In its recent Flavor Flash bulletin, food and beverage flavor company T. Hasegawa reported on trends for flavors and ingredients for 2023.

The key takeaways for dairy were: cooking fatigue among consumers post pandemic will benefit flavored products, flavor adds emotional value during tough financial times, and dairy categories must emphasize their health advantage.

To compete with the increasing array of functional foods and drinks, the report notes dairy must reassert leadership and reclaim the “it does a body good” messaging from years past.

Dairy can also be an affordable moodboosting upgrade to meals and snacks. The report reminds brands the comfort found in accessible and small format indulgence should not be underestimated.

When it comes to flavored dairy products, creamers are taking the lead in fun flavors and innovation is moving into whimsy, seasonality and finished product varieties. The fastest growing flavors were caramel and coffee (macchiato), coffee (mocca/mocha/moka/mochaccino) and spice/pumpkin pie.

Specialty and flavored butters can turn a basic ingredient into an enjoyable and sharable treat. The leading flavors in 2022 were garlic, honey, lemon and herb.

Opportunities to grow flavor options in fluid milk, yogurt and cheese are wide open even though the basics dominate store shelves.

The bulletin reported that 98% of adults in this country consume some form of dairy, with cheese consumed by 84%, butter by 77% and milk by 62%. Though 57% consume dairy alternatives, a quarter are interested in hybrids that blend dairy with plant-based ingredients.

2022 Budget Includes Fee Adjustments

At its November meeting in Louisville, Ky., the AJCA and NAJ Board of Directors approved pricing changes as part of the 2023 operating budget, effective January 1.

This includes a new tier for REAP and Performance programs (TPE, STEP) of 1-50 cows. The new fees are as follows:

• Herd fee – $165;

Equity fees will increase to $3.80 ($3.75) per cow. Lifetime membership will also increase to $150 beginning January 1, 2023.

These changes will generate revenue to cover increased operating costs of REAP, TPE and STEP, plus provide for necessary investments in staffing, programming and computer technologies.

“As Jersey breeders we have come to expect a level of service that is second to none,” comments President Alan Chittenden, Schodack Landing, N.Y. “However, the cost of providing these services has increased significantly. In order to maintain a balanced budget and compensate our valued employees at an appropriate level, the board felt justified in taking action with fee increases. What other services can you name that have not increased in price over the last eight years?”

The history of REAP, which enrolls 97% of the cows on AJCA performance programs today, shows that while adding value to AJCA programs is a constant endeavor, fee adjustments are far from a common occurrence. The last update to cow costs was in January 2014.

When REAP was introduced in January of 1995, the annual herd enrollment fee was $50 and the per-cow fee started at $10.75 for the first 100 cows, with reductions for additional cows that reflected the economies of scale in providing service. For a single herd price,

all registrations under six months of age were processed; official performance records and genetic evaluations were delivered on schedule; type appraisal was done every 7 to 10 months; NAJ provided milk marketing advice and support through Equity; and the Jersey Journal was delivered every month for a full year.

Twenty-eight years later, fees have been changed just six times and always with an eye towards improving services and adding value to ones already included. For example, REAP herds now receive a tiered reduction of pricing for transfers within the calendar year.

Because of timely fee adjustments, the AJCA was able to build the industry’s first on-demand 24/7 customer service website at www.infoJersey.com. JerseyMate was introduced in late 2000 and because it was internetbased, herd owners could run it when and as often as they wanted to. Advanced programming led to the 2007 release of BullsEye, a tool that hit the bull’s eye with its easy-to-use search, sort and select capabilities. Product discounts have been included in REAP, for JerseyTags, genotyping, ownership transfers and no-charge male transfers, and the $100 credit on advertising space of onehalf page or larger in this magazine.

Increased demand for REAP services followed, as planned, in the wake of the implementation of MCP in most federal milk marketing orders on January 1, 2000. Since then, Jerseys have surged from less than 4% of the U.S. milk cow population to nearly 15%, domestic semen sales have increased 245%, and REAP cow enrollment has more than doubled. It has taken more people, more travel and more equipment and information processing capacity to deliver expanded services in a timely manner.

Every decision to increase fees is evaluated carefully by the Association’s directors, and not taken lightly because they too operate their own dairies. The growth of REAP since its debut in 1995 is a powerful statement about the commitment the USJersey organizations have made to developing and delivering a service that makes you money, and that works best for you. Sheesleys Reap Rewards of Decades of Breeding at Cowbell Acres

If you travel the tanbark trail, you have likely noticed the name “Cowbell” appearing more and more often in the winner’s circle. Cowbell Acres is reaping the rewards of decades of selective breeding by Tracy and Carol Sheesley and their daughter, Christine Sheesley-Rozler. Christine’s 15-year-old twins, Graham and Chase, also help to operate the 110-acre, 20-cow Registered Jersey farm in the northwest corner of the state, 65 miles south of Ottawa.

The Sheesleys have set their hearts on an even loftier prize: breeding a National Jersey Jug Winner and a National Grand Champion. The aspiration is certainly within their grasp. Cowbell Shoes Cleopatra was just named Reserve Winner of the 2022 National Jersey Jug Futurity. Last year, Chase brought home the Premier Breeder banner from the All American Junior Jersey Show. And, in 2015, Cowbell Guapo Ricochet was Junior National Grand Champion for Ben Sauder of Tremont, Ill.

Though the herd is small, it is mighty, with a solid base on which to breed. The

Excellent-94% and another five are Excellent-93%, including “Cleopatra.” Most are backed by multiple generations of Excellent or Very Good dams.

“Though we want cows that look good in the show ring, they also need to do their jobs at home—put milk in the tank,” noted

Christine. Fortunately, this task has been easier in recent years, according to Christine. “The Jersey breed has made tremendous strides for both type and production. In the modern Jersey cow, the two go hand in hand. If a cow isn’t dairy and doesn’t have a quality udder, she isn’t going to do well in the show ring or on the farm.”

The Sheesleys use REAP to manage the herd. Cowbell Acres has a 2021 lactation average of 18,995 lbs. milk, 859 lbs. fat and 664 lbs. protein.

In the Beginning

Like many who are milking Jerseys today, the brown cow got her step in the door as a 4-H project for a Holstein kid. In this case, it was Carol, who grew up caring for her family’s grade Holstein herd but chose to show a Jersey at the county fair.

The Jersey won her heart, so when she and Tracy purchased a 23-acre farm in 1970, they established the dairy herd at Cowbell Acres with Jerseys. Both held full-time jobs off the farm—she as a legal secretary and he as a state trooper—but

worked diligently to grow their “hobby” in their free time. They started shipping milk in 1983 and expanded the barn and installed a pipeline in 1986. At that point, they were milking 24 cows and getting a hand with chores and the show string from their children, Timothy and Christine, who was crowned National Jersey Queen in 1989.

The first day of March 1996 was an eventful one for Cowbell Acres. The barn caught fire during chores and burned to the ground. Fortunately, most of the herd escaped and was milked and housed for four months at a nearby facility that lay empty. The Sheesleys moved the herd to the current farm in Canton, previously owned by Carol’s aunt and uncle, in July 1996. They renovated the existing barn and now house cows in 32 tie stalls and milk with a pipeline system. They raise calves in a barn with 10 individual pens of varying sizes that can be adjusted by moving their hog panel sides.

“Though I went to college, helped Piedmont Jerseys in Quebec with their show string, and graduated from the police academy in Albany, I never really left home, and the cows always came first,” said Christine.

She attended college at the Morrisville and Potsdam locations for the State University of New York, where she earned an associate degree in animal science, and then got an undergraduate degree in English literature from St. Lawrence University in 1995. She graduated from the police academy in January 1996 and followed in

the footsteps of her father as a state trooper, first stationed in Stormville and then in Canton. She retired with 20 years of service in May 2016 and then began working full time at Cowbell Acres.

Until recently, Christine and Carol teamed to milk, feed, and care for the cows, heifers, and two head of Jersey-Wagyu crosses raised for beef. With Carol’s spinal surgery in November, Christine now handles the bulk of the cattle chores with some hired help. Since he retired in 1991 (with 23 years of service), Tracy does most of the outside tractor work.

Four Foundation Purchases

Every animal in the Cowbell Acres herd traces to one of four foundation cows. The first was Masterman Jester Sabrina, purchased as a four-year-old in 1976 for $675 from Heaven Hill Farm of Lake Placid, N.Y. She had six daughters and a son and was appraised Very Good-86%.

“Sabrina” is in both the maternal and paternal lineage of the futurity standout, “Cleopatra,” who is sired by Cowbell Blue Suede Shoes, a homebred bull sired by Arethusa Verbatim Response-ET and out of Cowbell Guapo Sneakers, Excellent-91%. “Sabrina” is the eighth dam of “Cleopatra” and the ninth dam of “Sneakers.”

“Sneakers” is a show standout in her own right. She was Reserve All American Milking Yearling in 2010 and Grand Champion of the New York State Fair—a first for the family—in 2011.

The Sheesley family brought home their

second Grand Champion banner from the New York State Fair the next year, in 2012, with “Cleopatra’s” grandam, Cowbell Redwood Charity, who is also the family’s first homebred cow to be appraised Excellent-94%.

The second foundation purchase was Faithful Dee-Ann of SSF, from the Luchsingers of Silver Spring Farm, Syracuse, N.Y., in 1985.

“Though it is really hard to pick an alltime favorite, ‘Dee-Ann’ is right up there,” noted Christine. “I won Junior National Junior Champion honors with her in 1985 and took third in the Jug in 1988.”

“On top of that, she may have had the best personality of any cow we’ve owned. Mom remembers the day the barn caught fire and she saw ‘Dee-Ann’ escape danger and shepherd a pair of baby calves through the snow and pastures to safety in the woods.”

“She was quite the cow. She comes from the ‘Betty’ family at Marlu, which traces to a cow that spent nine months in Queen Victoria’s herd before she was exported. ‘Dee-Ann’ lived well past 11 years-ofage, was appraised 90 points, and had six daughters.”

Two favorites in the herd today from this cow family are Cowbell Casino Dorsay, Excellent-91%, and Cowbell Dragon Reckless, Excellent-94%. Last year, “Dorsay” was Junior All American Junior Two-Year-Old. At the Junior All American Jersey Show this year, she was Best Bred

Owned and placed second in the junior three-year-old class. She was Supreme Champion of the junior show at the New York State Fair and Grand Champion of the open show. Chase also won the SchirmFremstad Award as the highest-placing junior in the Jug. “Reckless” was third in the Jug in 2020 and third four-year-old in the junior show for Graham in 2021.

“Though they boys have done well with them in the show ring, they are easy keepers with awesome personalities, like their predecessor,” Christine stated.

The matriarch of the “M” cow family is Smithland Social Moose, purchased as a two-year-old from Marva K. Smith of Canastota, N.Y., in 1985.

The most recent foundation purchase, Rapid Bay Fatal Getaway Rich, is still in the herd today. The 10-year-old is the other cow appraised Excellent-94%. She was purchased from her breeders, Stephen and Janet Borland, Ormstown, Que., as a consignment to the Celebration of a Century at Silver Spring Farm in July 2014.

While the family has done well in the show ring on the halter of their own animals, numerous other animals that carry the Cowbell Acres prefix have done equally well for their new owners. Among the most well-known is the previously mentioned “Ricochet.” From the “Dee-Ann” family, she was Reserve Senior Champion at the All American Jersey Show in 2012 and Reserve All American Aged Cow in 2015 and 2017. She has 35 registered progeny, many marketed in elite sales by River Valley Farm.

Making the Most with What They Have

of manual labor, and less than desirable land.

But as the saying goes: when you are gifted lemons, make lemonade. The family’s lemons are heavy, clay ground that has been officially deemed as wetlands by the Environmental Protection Agency. Though much of the farm’s land is unsuitable for crops, it is perfect for solar panels—the family’s lemonade. Sol America recently signed a 25-year lease and a 40-acre field that was native grass last summer will soon harness solar energy.

“This allows us to purchase much better feed than we could ever grow on that field,” said Christine.

On the balance of the acreage, the family pastures cows and grows as much grass as possible for dry hay. They hire a friend to put up and wrap round bales and purchase some square bales as well.

“We gave up trying to grow corn silage here several years ago and wondered if we would be able to get milk without it,” commented Christine. “But the cows didn’t miss a beat. We now supplement the hay with grain and top dress with corn meal. After all, cows are ruminant grazers and meant to be on grass.”

Cowbell Shoes Cleopatra, Excellent-91%, was named Reserve Winner of the 2022 National Jersey Jug Futurity. The first animal purchased by the Sheesleys, Masterman Jester Sabrina, is on both the top and bottom sides of “Cleopatra’s” pedigree.

The Rewards

Anyone who has worked with cows in a tie stall barn knows it is labor intensive and back breaking. What makes the effort worthwhile? What makes the Sheesleys excited about heading to the barn every morning? There is nothing like the site of a row of freshly bedded, cud-chewing, beautiful-uddered bovines that you have developed on your own over decades. Nothing rivals the feeling of standing in the spotlight at the halter of a cow whose great-great-great grandma you bottle fed.

“The opportunity to watch new life unfold is another reward for the hard work,” summed Christine. “Every calf born brings with her or him the excitement and potential of the next generation. Seeing the new babies never gets old.”

“When I have a rough day, a quick walk through the calf barn gives me inner peace and helps me refocus on what is important.”

“I’m also a huge fan of the dairy cow herself and the milk she produces. I mean, is there anything more delicious than a nice cold glass of Jersey milk?”

Summary of November AJCA, NAJ Board Meetings

The fall meetings of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) and National All-Jersey Inc. (NAJ). Boards of Directors were held November 2 and 3, 2022, at the Hilton Garden Inn-Airport, Louisville, Ky. Actions are summarized below.

Finances and 2023 Budget. Financial statements for the AJCA and National AllJersey Inc. and Subsidiary, All-Jersey Sales Corporation (Jersey Marketing Service) were reviewed. Through nine months, the AJCA reported revenues of $2,730,583 and expenditures of $2,556,366 before the All American. NAJ reported revenues of $478,203 versus expenditures of $415,755. JMS revenues were $243,618; expenditures were $131,800. A net income through September 30, 2022, for all organizations was reported of $348,483 before the All American.

Budgets for 2023 were approved. Total AJCA revenues were budgeted at $3,550,380 against expenditures of $3,550,145. The AJCA budget was based on 136,000 registrations, 19,000 transfers, 170,250 cows enrolled on all performance programs (167,000 on REAP), 295,000 JerseyTags units, 7,055 genomic and ID qualification tests, and 313 pages of paid advertising in Jersey Journal.

The budget for National All-Jersey Inc. was based upon 1,005 Equity investors and All-Jersey Sales Corp. revenues of $199,500. Budgeted revenues for NAJAJSC combined were $826,250, with budgeted expenditures of $821,860.

Market values of investments at September 30 were: Building Fund, $1,362,879; Investment Trust, $936,388; Scholarship and other awards funds, $934,683; Jersey Youth Academy, $497,464; and AJCC Research Foundation, $2,441,898.

The Investment Advisory Committee met with investment managers on November 6 to review current portfolios and set investment strategies for 2023.

The board of directors approved the budget for Class VIII of Jersey Youth Academy.

Virtual spring meetings to be held. It was approved by the board of directors to have the AJCA, NAJ March board meetings, All American planning meetings, and the January USJersey staff

conference to be held virtually in 2023.

Fee Adjustments for Performance Programs. Approval of the 2023 AJCA budget included pricing increases for REAP enrollment.

Annual herd fees for REAP, TPE and STEP increased from $150 to $165.

A new tier for 1-50 cows was added to all performance programs.

Regional and National Shows. The Western National, Pennsylvania AllAmerican (Harrisburg), World Dairy Expo and California Spring Jersey Show were designated as AJCA regional shows for 2023. Designations are contingent upon enforcement of the PDCA Show Ring Code of Ethics, with all cows subject to ultrasound and milk sample testing.

For the 2023 All American shows, $5,000 was allocated to be divided equally among junior exhibitors.

August 1 will continue to be the date for fall show transfers for junior show eligibility. For a spring national show, April 1, will be the deadline for transfers and registrations to meet the ownership requirement.

Appointments. Named as associate chairs for the 2023 All American planning committees were Herby Lutz, Chester, S.C, sale; Lisa Demmer, Ellsworth, Wis., open show; Donna Phillips, Newton, Wis., National Jersey Jug Futurity; and Regina Pozzi, Petaluma, Calif., junior activities.

Grant Ahlem, Hilmar, Calif., was appointed for a five-year term on the

Research Advisory Committee.

National All-Jersey Inc.

The National All-Jersey board reviewed the 2022 dairy situation which experienced record-high milk prices but coupled with extremely high input costs. For the fourth consecutive year the Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program paid more in indemnities than premiums costs for up to five million pounds insured for $9.50/ cwt. income over feed costs. Due to lower expected milk prices in 2023, projections are that DMC payments will average $1.38/cwt. for $9.50 coverage in exchange for premium cost of $0.15/cwt.

Staff reported that the Dairy Cooperative Marketing Association (DCMA), a marketing agency in common of co-ops serving the Southeast, petitioned USDA to modify existing transportation credits in federal orders 5, 6, and 7, and to initiate market service payments in those same orders. Due to the limited scope of the hearing request, multiple component pricing for those orders was not eligible for inclusion.

The board reviewed the potential impact of the recently announced federal order recommendations from the National Milk Producers Federation board of directors. Those recommendations include:

• Increasing make allowances used in the product price formulas

• Return to using the ‘higher of’ the advance Class III and IV price to be the Class I base price

• Update Class I differentials

• Discontinue using the barrel cheese price in the protein price formula

• Increase the protein, other solids, and solids-not-fat factors in the Class III and Class IV price formulas

• Extend to 45 days (from the current 30 days) the reporting period of export sales of nonfat dry milk and dry whey

Expectations are that a national hearing will be held in the latter half of 2023.

The board approved NAJ’s proposed 2023 objectives.

Greg Lavan, manager of Jersey Marketing Service reported on the year-todate activity. He updated board members on the fall and winter sale lineup, including the Celebration of Brentwood Sale to be held in mid-December.

Next Annual Membership Meeting

The AJCA-NAJ Annual Meetings will be held June 21-24, 2023, at the Stoney Creek Hotel La Crosse–Onalaska, Onalaska, Wis. The National Heifer Sale will be held on June 23 in LaCrosse.

Deadlines for President and Director nomination petitions to be filed with the Executive Secretary are April 20 for AJCA (65 days prior to the Annual Meeting), and April 24 for NAJ (60 days prior).

Larry Wolfe to Retire in December

After 36 years of service to the national Jersey organizations, Larry Wolfe has announced he will retire effective December 31, 2022.

Over the past three-plus decades, he worked on a team, now called information technology, whose duties changed more quickly and broadly than perhaps any other and stepped up to the plate when a job needed to be done. Though he retires from the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) as a computer programmer, he also served as interim manager of the IT department from September 2017 until March 2022, when Philip Cleary was promoted to IT manager.

Working largely behind the scenes, Larry helped to maintain the Registered Jersey database and develop many of the tools and reports breeders use to manage their herds. He was also a valuable resource to staff, creating many of the programs they use daily to enter data, process orders, and assist breeders. For many years, he clerked the All American Jersey Show.

Larry brought a unique and muchneeded perspective to his work— stellar computer programing and data management skills coupled with hands-on, practical cow knowledge and down-to-earth common sense. This skillset gave him insight to notice when something looked “off” in a dataset or genetic evaluation and needed to be re-run or double-checked.

Though he would be the last to broadcast his own laurels, Larry played a vital role in adopting technology at the Jersey organizations and developing tools Jersey breeders use on the farm to manage their cattle.

“Larry is a humble man who helped make a lot of good things happen for Jersey breeders without drawing attention to himself,” commented AJCA Executive Secretary Neal Smith.

Larry was born into a family that raised Registered Brown Swiss at White Haven Farm in Chebanse, Ill. The second child and eldest son of 12 siblings, he held his own when it came to chores and was active in 4-H and FFA. His early loves were beautiful show cows, and he became a master at presenting them for the ring.

After he graduated from high school, he split his time between the home farm and Kankakee Community College, where he studied agriculture production and management. He was secretary of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and judged on the

dairy team. In 1971, he was high individual in reasons and the Holstein and Guernsey breeds at the national post-secondary contest.

His first career position was assistant herdsman for Ray Will Farm in Herscher, Ill. Nineteen months later, he headed to Newberry, S.C., where he managed a pair of prominent Registered Jersey herds in the mid-to-late 1970s, first at the nationally prominent Headspring Farm and then at Senn-Sational Jerseys. While here, he was

led him down the Jersey path, another proved to be more impactful on bringing him to the home offices of the American Jersey Cattle Club (AJCC)—his future wife, Cari Weinberg. The Jersey girl from New Jersey was an area representative for the Southeast and the two crossed paths at the North Carolina State Fair.

They wed in 1983 and then moved to Raleigh, N.C., to enable Cari to work on an AJCC appraisal project at North Carolina State University and Larry to pursue his associates degree in business computer programing at Wake Technical College.

In 1985, a life changing opportunity arose for Larry when John Clay, with the Dairy Records Processing Center (DRPC) in Raleigh, recognized this “diamond in the rough” and found him a parttime position. Alas, Larry found his niche: a career that combined his data analysis and programing skills with dairy industry experience.

While with the DRPC, he got his feet wet developing programs that brought information from the database to the farm computer. Among the programs he helped to develop were a least-cost ration analysis and a gateway for download of DRPC data.

He also helped with the cattle sales hosted by Newberry County and earned his first wages from the national Jersey organizations as a fitter for the sale manager, Jersey Marketing Service (JMS).

Larry gained genetics experience in the late 1970s that proved invaluable to his employment with Jersey. He was the bull herdsman for Illini Sire Service, a custom collection facility, in Cornell, Ill. He assisted with collection and freezing of semen, instructed on-farm A.I. training classes, and became better acquainted with the progeny proving process, from beginning to end. He was also herdsman for Tri-D Acres, a 250-cow Registered Holstein herd in Auburn, Ill. Among his responsibilities were care of the 40 elite cows managed in box stalls.

He first pursued computer programming while he was managing a third Jersey farm in Newberry—Bush River Jerseys. He worked for “Doc” Malnati and his family for more than four years, caring for cows by day and driving an hour to attend Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood at night.

In 1987, the Wolfes moved to Reynoldsburg, Ohio, where Larry became a computer programmer for the AJCC and Cari became the JMS coordinator. The two worked together at company headquarters for 35 years, until Cari’s retirement as director of research and genetic program development in June 2022.

Outside the office, Larry has also been very active in the community. He has sung in church choirs from childhood. For more than 45 years, he has sung with a barbershop quartet. He now fills the baritone role with the Buckeye Blend, an acapella group in high demand at tailgates, fundraisers, and private events, and known for their parity of all things Buckeye. A testimony to this passion is print of Norman Rockwell’s “Barbershop Quartet,” a rarity in Larry’s simple and sparsely decorated office space.

He also has been a donor with the American Red Cross for many years, now donating blood through apheresis.

Larry shares his love of music with Cari, a former Sweet Adeline, and their daughter, Rebecca, who earned a degree in musical theatre from Kent State and is now a merchandiser for a company that specializes in Broadway events in New York City.

Group Lots Highlight Dairyland Protein Sale

Buyers found a ready supply of production-bred animals from well-known cow families at this year’s Dairyland Protein Sale. The sale was conducted online, with bidding opening on October 10 and closing out on October 13 through CowBuyer.com. In all, 19 lots sold as individuals and group lots for an average of $1,743.42. Five Jersey breeders from Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin made purchases.

Nominations Open for 2023 National Jersey Awards

Nominations are sought for four awards to be presented at the Annual Meetings of the American Jersey Cattle Association and National All-Jersey Inc. in LaCrosse, Wis., June 21-24, 2023.

Any lifetime member of the AJCA can nominate qualified persons for these awards.

Master Breeder Award. The Master Breeder Award is bestowed annually upon a living AJCA member, family, partnership, or corporation, who, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, has bred outstanding animals for many years and thereby has made a notable contribution to the advancement of the Jersey breed in the United States.

Distinguished Service Award. The Distinguished Service Award is bestowed upon as many living AJCA members and/ or members’ families, who, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, have rendered outstanding and unselfish service for many years and thereby have made a notable contribution to the advancement of the Jersey breed in the United States.

Award for Meritorious Service. The AJCA-NAJ Award for Meritorious Service is bestowed annually upon a living individual, who, in the joint opinion of the Boards of Directors of the American Jersey Cattle Association and National All-Jersey Inc., has made a notable contribution to the advancement of the Jersey breed and the livelihood of Jersey owners in the United States through research, education, development, marketing, or other significant activities of the allied dairy industry.

Young Jersey Breeder Award. These awards are bestowed annually upon as many living AJCA members and/or members’ families, who, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, merit recognition. Nominees must be active members of the American Jersey Cattle Association and must be at least 28 years of age but not more than 40 years of age as of January 1 of the recognition year. Selection is based upon expertise in dairy farming and Jersey cattle breeding; participation in AJCA and NAJ programs; and leadership in Jersey and other dairy and agricultural organizations.

The 66 highest-ranking bulls with NAAB marketing codes A and F from the official single breed “S” genetic evaluations released by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) for December 2022 are listed below. Code A indicates active A.I. progeny proven bulls, while code F designates foreign-proven bulls marketed in the United States. Bulls must be genotyped and have a BBR to be included.

Bulls are separated in two groups, with those having AJCA Herd Register status or a Generation Count of 4-6 and a BBR 100, listed first, followed by bulls with Generation Count (GC) 3

The cut-off for this list is a Jersey Performance IndexTM of 149. Bulls are listed in two groups, with those having AJCA Herd Register status or a Generation Count of 4-6 and a BBR 100, listed first, followed by bulls with Generation Count (GC) 3 or GC 4-6 with a BBR 93 and lower.

NAAB member organizations assigned G-code status to 486 Jersey bulls. These bulls average +684M, +49F, +35P, CM$ +511 NM$ +502, and JPI +110. March 1 Deadline for Production Contests

Entries are due no later than March 1 for the Living Lifetime Production Contest and the National Jersey Youth Production Contest.

To be eligible for the Living Lifetime Production Contest, cows must be alive as of December 31, 2022, with either minimum production credits on DHIR test of 225,000 lbs. milk, 10,000 lbs. fat, and 8,000 lbs. protein.

To enter the contest, submit a DHI cow page with lifetime production credits for each animal nominated to Erick Metzger, Herd Services Manager at the AJCA office, 6486 E. Main St., Reynoldsburg, Ohio 43068-2362. Entries may also be faxed to his attention at 614/861-8040.

Entries are also due March 1 for the National Jersey Youth Production Contest. Contestants between the ages of 9 and 19 on January 1, 2022, are eligible if they are the recorded owner of the cow on or before her freshening date. Registered Jerseys completing DHIR or DHIA records of 305-days or less between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022, may be entered.

REAP Herds Ranked By GJPI Average, December 2022

The top 25% of U.S. Jersey herds ranked by average Jersey Performance IndexTM are listed below. This list includes qualifying herds with an average GJPI of +20 or greater. Listed next to the number of cows in the herd is the percent of the herd that has been genotyped and included in the average.

Herds must be enrolled in the AJCA REAP program to be included in the ranking and have at least 10 Registered Jerseys with JPIs. Cows with genomic evaluations are included in the average.

The average includes only Herd Register and Generation Count 4, 5 and 6 cows that have calved within the past 15 months with no termination code associated with the current lactation.

In case of a tie, the herd ranked higher for Predicted Transmitting Ability Protein (PTAP) is listed first. Any herds that remain tied are then listed in order of herd average for PTA Milk (PTAM).

There are 183 herds listed with an average JPI of +39. Sexing

Technologies herd took the top spot this genetic run. The 28 cow herd has an average GJPI of +80 and is 100% genotyped. Martin Dairy LLC, Tillamook, Ore., ranks second for average GJPI. The 964 cow herd is 99% genotyped and has an average GJPI of +78.

Two of the herds at Trans-Ova Genetics, Sioux Center, Iowa took the third and fourth. The first herd of 48 cows (75% genotyped) have an average GJPI of +75. The second herd of 687 cows has an average GJPI of +75 and is 99% genotyped.

The 11-cow herd of Travis Love and Melissa Leatherman of Kennewick, Wash., rounds out the top five. The herd has an average GJPI of +74 and is 100% genotyped.

There were 112,559 cows in 725 REAP herds summarized in the December 2022 genetic evaluations with an average GJPI of +36. GPTA averages for the breed were +174M, +14F, +11P, +176 CM$, +173 NM$, +148 FM$ and +141 GM$.

Adam M. Breakell

Adam M. Breakell, Glencoe, Minn., 47, passed away on November 7, 2022, at his home.

He was born on May 17, 1975, in Torrington, Conn., to Thomas and Constance (Jural) Breakell. He graduated from Wamogo High School in Litchfield, Conn., in 1993 and then from the World Wide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa, in 2015. Adam was baptized at The Lighthouse Baptist Church in Durant, Okla.

His family operated a Registered Jersey farm in Goshen and bred cattle with the Milo prefix. Among the most well-known purchases was Bri-Lin Ren Sofie, from which the Milo Vindication Season-ET family was developed. “Season” was purchased by Billings Farm and Museum, Woodstock, Vt., as a young cow and made her final home at Arethusa Farm, Litchfield, Conn. She was first senior three-year-old at the Central National Jersey Show in 2009 and All-Canadian Mature Cow in 2012.

At his core, Adam was truly a farm boy at heart and loved the Jersey breed like no other. Most recently he was secretary of the Minnesota Jersey Breeders Association. He also enjoyed breeding and showing cattle and hunting and was a talented farrier.

In his professional life, Adam was in sales and logistics for Interstate Energy Partners Holdings LLC in Plymouth, Minn., and owned and operated 26 North Enterprise. His passion for trucking eventually evolved into a longtime dream of starting his own company.

He was a pure, genuine, kind-hearted soul who modeled and effortlessly taught patience, respect, love, and compassion. His target shooting skills were as impressive as his knowledge and collection of guns. His work ethic, determination, and, at times, stubbornness to succeed, are to be admired. He loved to travel and made friends in every corner of his life.

Adam was an honest, loyal, “handshake is all ‘ya need” kind of guy. His dry sense of humor, perfectly timed one-liners, and flawless impersonations brought laughter and joy to family and friends.

He was a member of the Agricultural Society of Goshen, the Northwest Connecticut Draft Horse Association, and the National Farriers Association. He was a certified instructor with the National Rifle Association for home safety, personal protection in the home, and rifle, shotgun, and pistol use.

Adam made his home in Glencoe with Samantha Hawkins and her two children, Lauren and Emery, and was blessed with

three other children, Elijah “Eli,” Caleb, and Chance (Sabrina).

He is also survived by a brother, Seth (Susan) Breakell; a sister, Michaela (Sarah), and her three children; and many other relatives and family friends.

David O. Moore

David O. Moore, Burbank, Ohio, passed away on his 90 th birthday, November 10, 2022, at The Avenue at Wooster and became reunited in heaven with the love of his life, his late wife Arlene.

Son of the late Ernest H. and Alta Hastings Moore, he was born in 1932 in Apple Creek, Ohio, and married Mildred “Arlene” Franks in 1952. She passed away in 2011.

David was a dairy farmer for most of his life, operating Nev-R-Dun Farm, a Registered Jersey farm, with his family in Burbank. He was a member of the American Jersey Cattle Association. Over the years, he and Arlene attended many annual meetings of the national Jersey organizations, many with fellow Ohio Jersey breeders.

David also volunteered for 4-H and enjoyed watching cattle shows at the Wayne County Fair.

He also spent several years driving a school bus for Norwayne Local Schools, where he fostered relationships and positively impacted the lives of local young people.

David was a member of Grace Church in Wooster. He never missed a Sunday lunch at the Green Leaf Restaurant after church. He listened to southern gospel music of the Gaither Vocal Band and even traveled by bus to watch them live. He was an avid fan for sports of every kind and square danced with Arlene.

He is survived by children Paul (Kristine) Moore of Burbank and Donald Moore of Wooster; four grandchildren; and 14 greatgrandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by siblings Bascom Moore, Ernest H. Moore, Marjorie L. Noletti, Wilda V. Soka, Lena Horn, Wayne H. Moore, and Glenn Moore.

Stephen D. Noble

Stephen D. “Steve” Noble, Gillett, Pa., 66, passed away on November 17, 2022, at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa.

He was born on May 22, 1956, in Troy, Pa., son of Tommy and Shirley (Hall) Noble.

A lifelong dairy farmer, Steve operated Nobledale Farm with his brother, Stuart, and his family in Gillett. The Noble family established the farm in northern Pennsylvania in 1832 and began raising Registered Jerseys in 1888. The 80-cow herd is enrolled on REAP and has a 2022 lactation average of 16,870 lbs. milk, 811 lbs. fat and 628 lbs. protein. With the July 2022 herd appraisal, the herd includes 20 Excellent and 51 Very Good cows and has an average final score of 86.7%. The Nobles use JerseyTags for permanent identification and advertise with the Jersey Journal.

Among the most well-known matriarchs developed by the Nobles include Nobledale Juno Vermont, Excellent-94%, with a top record of 27,330 lbs. milk, 1,138 lbs. fat and 923 lbs. protein. She has 52 registered progeny and numerous other descendants, including Dave-Ron Militia Security, who was syndicated in The All American Jersey Sale in 2007.

Steve was a member of the American Jersey Cattle Association and a retired assistant chief of Big Elm Volunteer Fire Department in Daggett, Pa. Among his favorite pastimes were hunting and spending time with his grandson, Clayton.

In addition to his brother and sisterin-law, Elaine, and grandson, Stephen is survived by his wife of 44 years, Donna (Davis) Noble; a daughter, Stephanie (Richmond) Havens of Columbia Crossroads, Pa.; a sister, Sharon Noble of Troy; two other brothers, Terry (Linda) Noble and Tim (Julia) Noble, all of Millerton, Pa.; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

George Robert Dean

George Robert Dean, Chicora, Pa., 81, passed away at home with loved ones by his side on November 20, 2022.

He was born to William Wendell and Ethel (McFarland) Dean in New Castle, Pa., on November 13, 1941. He graduated from Laurel High School in 1959, where he served as secretary of his FFA chapter. He married his loving wife, Peggy Moore, in 1972.

George worked for Agway Inc. for 17 years, retiring in 1980.

In 1979, he and his family moved to what would become Ro-Ann Haven Farm LP in Chicora. The Deans raised Registered Jerseys and Brown Swiss. The Jersey herd was enrolled on REAP. George was a member of the American Jersey Cattle Association

George was a hard-working man with a passion for agriculture, hunting, mentoring others, and watching old Westerns. He sat on the executive board of the Penn State Extension Service for Butler County, was a member of the Butler County Holstein Club and Butler County Farm Bureau and served on the development committee of Butler County 4-H. George was president for each of these organizations as well. For 39 years, he was a leader of the Butler County 4-H Dairy Club. For 41 years, he sat on the board of the Butler Farm Show; several terms he served as president.

He received Butler County’s Bullshipper Award for his efforts to improve agriculture and community relations and the Butler Farm Show’s Founders Award in 2022. His family received Butler Farm Show’s

Eagle Bowl award for exhibit quality, volunteerism, and sportsmanship in 1989, 1995, and 2022.

George was known for his compassion, generosity, and love for others. As a family friend summed, “He was a dad and pap to half the world.”

In addition to his wife of 50 years, Peggy, he is survived by five children, Trinda Booher (Matt Harlan), Cathy (Mark) Sodersten, and Jodi Ketterer (Rick Nail), all of New Castle, Michael Dean of Chicora, and Angela (Randall) Burke of Worthington; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Sally (Pete) Makarevich; a brother, Philip (Cindy) Dean of New Castle; a brother-in-law, Thomas (Sue) Moore of Portersville; and four nieces and five nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by in-laws Lloyd and M. Hulda Moore, a brother, William Dean, and a sister, Phoebe Parish.
