Creating Memories to Last a Lifetime

Colin Wussow, Cecil, Wisconsin

It does not seem that long ago my family and I were sitting in the stands at The All American Jersey Show watching our family’s career in the Jersey breed take off. Our crooked-nosed heifer, “Natalie,” was named Reserve Junior Champion that year.

I remember being a young kid and raising other dairy breeds until I found the niche with Jerseys. After that, my drive, love, and passion for the Jersey breed ignited. With that, a lifetime of memories. I am blessed to be named the 2020 National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest Winner.

I have exhibited at the local, state, and national shows with my Jerseys. These shows have allowed me the opportunity to meet numerous influential individuals that have helped shape me into the person that I have become. Along with the shows, I have participated in the Pot O’Gold Sale, All American Sale, and Wisconsin State Sale.

One of my favorite memories was walking our homebred cow, “Naomi,” into the middle of the ring at the 2019 World Dairy Expo as she was honored with the Wisconsin Cow of the Year award. She has been one of my favorite cows to work with over the years and is pictured with me on the cover of the Jersey Journal.

Another fond memory I have is attending Jersey Youth Academy. Being able to meet people from around the United States to learn about how their operations are run has given me insights into the future for our family’s business. We also had the opportunity to listen and visit with dairy industry professionals to get further knowledge of the industry and possibilities available.

These accolades sure have created some fond memories. However, I would not be where I am today without the help from other people within the industry. I would like to give special thanks to Rodney Hodgson, Walter and Joyce Owens, Lloyd Heinz, Trent Styczynski, Jon and Katie Holewinski, Ross and Amber Fischer and family, and the Steve and Jill Tauchen family for all their support throughout the years. I truly appreciate the support of the Wisconsin Jersey Breeders Association and the AJCA staff for the opportunities they provide. Members of the AJCA staff, past and present, have always prioritized youth and created great activities and opportunities for us.

Now for my family who has been there through the good and bad. First thank you to my grandparents for all their help over the years from bringing last minute supplies, to cheering me on, and being my taxi to get me to all these events. I would like to thank Kaila and Joey for always pushing me to do my best and Kaila for being my partner in the show endeavors. I am excited to see where my niece Amelia goes as she continues in the Jersey family.

Lastly, I would like to thank my parents. They have been my rock. They have supported me through everything, and words cannot describe how thankful I am for them. I am truly blessed with such supportive families. All of us working together makes memories to cherish forever.

As I turn the chapter as a Jersey youth, I look forward to helping others make memories with the Jersey breed. I have been able to create great relationships with dairy industry professionals, developed connections with AJCA and NAJ staff, and met Jersey breeders who have turned into lifelong friends. You will never regret the connections that you can make and the knowledge you gain. Apply for the Jersey Youth Academy because that is an amazing experience as well. Step outside of your comfort zone.

While my Jersey youth chapter may be closing, I look forward to entering a new one after graduation. But I will always remember and cherish my Jersey memories!
