Welcome to the
2017 COLLECTION Whether you’re a lifelong enthusiast, owner or breeder of Lipizzans, or just now learning about the breed, we are excited to share this newly created Lipizzan Stallion Guide with you! Lipizzan horses represent over 400 years of select breeding for beauty, nobility, and a rare combination of courage, strength, ability, temperament, and intelligence. Many people know of the Lipizzan through the work of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, Austria, where Lipizzan stallions are meticulously trained in classical dressage and prepared for a lifetime of performances, the highest levels of which include the “Airs Above the Ground.” But what most people don’t know is that Lipizzans excel in many equestrian disciplines, including competing at international levels in dressage, driving and working equitation. Beyond their competitive strengths, what most Lipizzan owners treasure the most is the breed’s loyalty and willingness to form a partnership with their rider/handler. I love talking to Lipizzan owners and hearing about their experiences with trail riding, search and rescue, liberty work, mounted archery, working cattle and many other “shared moments.” It’s clear Lipizzans are both willing and well-suited for a lifetime of adventures. If you are considering breeding a purebred or part Lipizzan, I hope that you find the United States Lipizzan Federation Stallion Guide a useful resource. Sincerely, Lisa Kelly Simmons President United States Lipizzan Federation

The
LIPIZZAN The modern Lipizzan has proven to be an extremely versatile and athletic horse, excelling in many disciplines, including dressage, driving, western, and trail, as well as being a noble family companion. The Lipizzan is one of the oldest breeds of horses in Europe. The original breeding farm, Lipizza, was created in 1580 in what was at that time part of the Austrian Empire (now the country of Slovenia). Lipizzan horses have been selectively bred for strength, hardiness, temperament, endurance, and longevity, whose documented bloodlines are traceable from the first pedigrees that date from the 1700s. The desire for a powerful and agile horse to be used for military purposes as-well as for the noble families in Europe began the breeding that led to the modern Lipizzan of today. The Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria, exemplifies the beauty and uniqueness of the Lipizzan by showcasing their trainability and strength. The school has used the Lipizzan exclusively because it is the most capable of performing all the dressage movements, especially the “airs above the ground.” Standing an average of 14.2 to 15.2 hands and most commonly gray, the Lipizzan is considered a baroque type horse—sturdy, strong, balanced, elegant, and compact. There are fewer than 1,150 purebred Lipizzans in North America. The highest concentration ofthe breed

Breeding
THE FUTURE What is a Purebred Lipizzan?
Lipizzans have been selectively bred for over 400 years. A purebred Lipizzan can trace all lines of their pedigree back to internationally-recognized founding stallions (8 total) and mares (65 total, representing Classical, Croatian, Hungarian and Romanian mare families). The Lipizzan breed has been the subject of genetic studies in the European Union and in North America. These studies have shown that the breed has healthy genetic diversity and that even though it is a rare breed based on numbers, careful breeding practices have avoided inbreeding concerns. The long history of careful and selective breeding of Lipizzans has resulted in a breed known for being healthy and hardy, with many individuals happily working into their 20s and living into their 30s.
Lipizzans: A Rare Breed
In 2016 the USLF conducted a census to determine a current understanding of the Lipizzan population in North America. The chart on the opposite page shows the census results as of February 2017. The census data was combined with the number of horses not reported in the census to develop a current population estimate. The USLF estimates that there are approximately 1,150 purebred Lipizzans in North America. This number is expected to decrease based on recent (last five years) breeding records. Note: Geldings in the breeding category have frozen semen available.
The 2017 USLF Lipizzan Stallion Guide:
As part of our commitment to protect, promote and preserve the Lipizzan breed, the USLF presents the 2017 Lipizzan Stallion Guide.
UNITED STATES LIPIZZAN FEDERATION
The goal of this publication is to support Lipizzan breeders and stallion owners by helping to raise awareness of their Lipizzan stallions availability to North American mare owners. The USLF Lipizzan Stallion Guide showcases USLF registered stallions owned by current USLF members, as well as stallions with frozen semen available for import through USLF member agents. To make the document as comprehensive as possible, basic information for other available stallions is also included. The Guide includes some exciting options of frozen semen from stallions around the world! We are committed to helping breeders and prospective owners, and strongly believe education about all potential breeding options is important. By opening up the guide to non-USLF horses, we honor our commitment to the future strength of this rare breed. If you have a horse you would like listed in future editions of the guide, please contact us at USLFoffice@gmail.com
Two Different Documents: USLF Lipiczzan Stallion Guide vs. USLF Stud Book
The USLF Lipizzan Stallion Guide is a directory of Lipizzan stallions currently available for breeding, based on information submitted by owners or agents. The USLF Stud Book is a reference publication available for purchase through the USLF website that presents information on all North American Lipizzans (stallions and mares) that have been evaluated and approved for breeding. Lipizzan breed evaluations are conducted every two years and horses are judged by a Lipizzan International Federation (LIF) recognized judge against the LIF Lipizzan breed standard.

ABOUT: Maestoso II Daniela, also known as “Super” is exactly what his barn name suggests. Few horses have the power and floaty, flamboyant movement that he possesses. Together with his amateur owner, he has won multiple national awards through 4th level, and PSG Championships in the open division. This spectacular horse has international capability. Maestoso II Daniela is currently training I1 and will be shown in 2017 USDF rated shows. BREEDING: Sire Maestoso II Sabrina was reserve champion in the U.S. Dressage Federation’s 1990 and 1991 Intermediare Freestyle Horse of the Year standings. He became a breed ambassador, and was one of the country’s top Lipizzaner breeding stallions. Dam-sire Maestoso Blanca-76 was a performing stallion from the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, and gift to President Ronald Regan from the Austrian Chamber of Commerce. It is a tremendous honor to receive one of these magnificent royalblooded stallions, fully trained to the highest haute école as a gift. The bloodlines of this rare and historic performing stallion sired the mare Daniela. These bloodlines help produce temperament and dressage ability in Maestoso II Daniela’s offspring. Both of his parents were from the Djakovo Stud and he is Lipizzan International Federation(LIF) approved. He stands at 15 hands with a shorter, narrower back than the typical US Lipizzan. He is a very connected, intelligent, curious stallion and extremely easy to work around. He is naturally drawn to work with people. His conformation, classic Lipizzan head and neck, as well as wonderful temperament make him a nice choice for any mare owner who is looking for a more compact Lipizzan.

ABOUT: Maestoso Troja has a kind nature, athleticism, good conformation and gaits combined with a head-turning presence. He has a beautiful eye, a well-shaped neck, a long shoulder, and significant bone in his legs (20 cm at cannon bone). He has a wonderful trot with lots of suspension and a well balanced canter. During the 2014 USLF Breed Evaluations he received an overall score of 80% and a high mark of 9.5 for Breed Type from Dr. Yvonne Peeters. Maestoso Troja’s genetics are hard to find in the North American Lipizzan breeding population as they represent the classic SRS/Piber bloodlines through their modern breeding program. Both his sire and dam were imported to Oregon from Piber so he presents an exciting option for mare owners looking for a genetically unrelated stallion. He would be best suited to a mare who needs an Imperial-type stallion with a good character, unique substance, and natural balance. BREEDING: Due to personal constraints Maestoso Troja was gelded. Knowing his bloodlines to be of extreme value we collected and froze enough to breed to a limited number of mares. For this reason his frozen semen is only available for breeding select, purebred mares supported by veterinarians with demonstrated proficiency working with frozen semen. If you have a mare that you believe is a good match to Maestoso Troja, I invite you to contact me.

ABOUT: Born in 1997 at Dalnic Stud in Transylvania, Maestoso XLIV-17 boasts a Lipizzan International Federation (LIF) approved pedigree. His sire, Maestoso XLIV was the main stud at Dalnic and was pictured in the most famous German book on Lipizzans, “Auf Den Spuren Der Lipizzaners,” by Heinz Nurnberg. According to Atjan Hop, the General Secretary of the LIF and foremost pedigree expert, “He is descended from - in my opinion - the best Maestoso-branch there is at this moment. His sire, M.XLIV, delivers only good progeny; producing bone and breathtaking movement in the offspring. The branch leads back to the Slovakian stud Topolcianky, which is one of the heirs of the imperial breed of the former court stud Lipizza.” Maestoso XLIV-17’s maternal family goes back to 49 Hidas. 49 Hidas was an original Lipizzan mare born 1909 at the Stud of Count Andrassy in Hungary. Dr. Laszlo Kadar veterinarian and breeder at Dalnic Stud Farm reported that Stoso’s Dam, 20 Conversano XXV-25 was the most successful broodmare in the country. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Trained to FEI

ABOUT: Neapolitano Wandosa II is a classic stallion, embodying the noble type and uphill build for which the Lipizzan breed is known. He is 15 hands with a long shoulder and more refined profile, an asset in the US breeding market. His gaits are clear and correct, with a particularly balanced canter. With extremely limited showing and only being under saddle less than a year, he has dressage scores up to 74%. BREEDING: Neapolitano Wandosa II’s greatest asset is his temperament -- he is confident, brave and very personable. His three foal crops show his temperament to be a characteristic of his babies. Mississippi View Farm recommends this stallion as a good cross for mares that lack refinement and scope in their gaits, need improvement in their neck or shoulder position or tend toward a shy or overly-sensitive personality. Available via fresh cooled semen. Semen has been evaluated as very high quality with high motility.

ABOUT: Pluto Matina “Frodo” is a remarkable Lipizzan stallion. He is currently schooling third level dressage. Frodo has a great brain, beautiful face, expressive eyes and nice conformation. Frodo has a great work ethic and is a gentleman in the arena, as well as in the breeding shed. Frodo has very classic Lipizzan presence with big comfortable movement. He possesses a very nice neck and shoulder slope. Frodo received 81% with an 8 for type for his evaluation in Kernersville, West Virginia with Dr. Oulehla. Frodo’s first foal was a filly born in June of 2007, Devona is very graceful and elegant. In 2008, Devona received a 72% from Hilda Gurney in her Lipizzan breed Class at Dressage at Devon. Devona was also evaluated by Dr. Oulehla when she was one and received all 8s and 9s! BREEDING: Pluto Matina’s bloodlines go back to the legendary Pluto Calcedona, who was among some of the first Austrian-bred Lipizzans to be born in North America. In 1976, at the age of 15, Pluto Calcedona, made his film debut as Buffalo Bill’s horse in a Paul Newman movie. The Dreitzler family, who owned Pluto Calcedona, imported and bred many Lipizzans and promoted the breed through exhibitions. Many of the foals from this line have gone on to compete up to Grand Prix and to do exhibitions including the Airs Above the Ground. Pluto Matina’s bloodlines would cross well with horses bred by Tempel Farms.
