Opening Night features the rhythmic music of South America. Your Symphony Orchestra will welcome guest conductor, Sarah Higino, director and conductor of the Projeto Volta Redonda Cidade da Música, one of the largest public music programs in Brazil serving over 4,500 students. Our own percussion professor, Dr. John Wooton, joins the orchestra performing Bembe My Way, and Amigos de Borinquen, two works he arranged for orchestra. We will also perform the Concerto for 3 Percussionists and Orchestra by South American composer, Lissandro Parada. The composer will be joined by two percussionists from Patagonia, South America, Angel Frette and Jeronimo Molina, in the performance of the concerto. If that’s not enough, the Southern Chorale joins the orchestra to end the evening with Villas Lobos’ Choros No. 10, a work with the spirit of carnival. It will be a rousing night of Latin rhythms that will have everyone dancing in the aisles!

Presented by the Southern Opera and Musical Theater Company

Jonathan Yarrington, Director and Colin McKenzie, Music Director

This beloved Christmas opera by Gian Carlo Menotti, tells the story of Amahl, a shepherd boy who has a propensity to tell tall tales, and his mother. Amahl’s most recent story is about a star with a tail that moves across the sky like a chariot on fire. When three splendid strangers knock on the door and ask to rest in their tiny home, Amahl is thrilled and fascinated. When the visitors describe the miraculous child they are seeking, both Amahl and his mother are moved to give reverence to the child, as well. Their humble faith conjures a miracle.

Sung in English with English supertitles

Chris Moore and Brian Walker, trumpets and Marcos Machado, double bass

We continue our musical voyage with music rooted in Vienna and Venice. Southern Miss’ double bass professor, Dr. Marco Machado, joins the orchestra for virtuosic Nine Variants on a Theme of Paganini by Frank Proto. Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusic, an audience favorite, continues the journey. Two outstanding trumpet soloists, Dr. Moore and Dr. Walker, will close the concert with a rousing performance of Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Trumpets and Orchestra. This brilliant work features the virtuosic and heroic sounds characteristic of Vivaldi’s music.
