Congratulations Dr. Awan Dr. Kamran Awan, an Associate Professor and Program Director, recently graduated from the exclusive American Dental Association (ADA) Institute for Diversity in Leadership. The program is designed to enhance the leadership skills of dental professionals who belong to racial, ethnic and/or gender backgrounds that have been traditionally underrepresented in leadership roles. The Institute provides an opportunity to gain leadership experience, strengthen professional networks and set new leadership paths in the profession and community. As a key part of the leadership learning experience, each participant designs and completes a personal leadership project for their community or the profession.

Medicare Call Lab Awarded Grant Dignity Health has awarded Roseman University's Medicare Call Lab a Community Grant of $22,000 to support its efforts to serve senior and disabled Medicare beneficiaries in Nevada through 2022. Through a partnership with Nevada’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), volunteer student pharmacists from the Roseman University chapter of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) answer phone calls from Medicare beneficiaries and provide unbiased information to help them make informed decisions about their Medicare enrollment and coverage options. The goal of the lab is to help beneficiaries enroll in the most cost-effective plan to meet their individual needs. Last year, the Medicare Call Lab added medication evaluation to its list of services.

Inspiration

Emotional Homeostasis, Emotional Intelligence, and the Lifelong Colleague Commitment SUBMITTED BY DR. KRIS MUNK

Have you ever witnessed someone totally lose their cool? Years ago, I was in the operating room helping to put someone’s face back together following a terrible car accident when my co-worker became so frustrated with part of the procedure that he threw a #15 Bard-Parker scalpel across the room, bouncing it off the wall. Perhaps nice for an Impalement Arts Act, but certainly inappropriate in the operating room. Thankfully no one was in the line of fire. When he was later questioned about the incident and was asked why he got so angry, he responded, “I wasn’t angry! I was just frustrated that things weren’t going as planned.” When viewed through the lens of Emotional Intelligence, several things are very wrong here. First, this surgeon lacked the emotional selfawareness necessary to recognize that he was, in fact, angry, since frustration is a tertiary form of the primary emotion of anger. Second, he did not appreciate that his mounting frustration could trigger an emotional outburst. Third, he lacked the emotional self-control necessary to keep his disruptive impulses in check. A primary objective of the human organism is homeostasis – maintaining stability, equilibrium, and balance. When something happens to upset that balance, a strong emotional reaction is triggered in protest. In the case of this surgeon, his brain wanted him to be happy (“I’m doing such a great job and I’ll even be home in time for dinner.”), but when things didn’t go as planned (“Why won’t this bleeding stop?” “Dagnabit - this is the wrong suture!!”), his state of happiness was threatened and a whole host of neural and biochemical actions were triggered.

Ultimately, his “frustration” overflowed and without thinking he hurled the scalpel across with room. This example reveals how emotions do play a major role in our lives and failure to control emotions can have significant consequences. By understanding the different types of emotions and what triggers our emotions, we can gain a deeper understanding of the impact that emotions have on behavior, and we can learn to control emotional outbursts.

Inspiration of a dentist who is trying to give a local anesthetic injection; a patient who is non-compliant with guidance given from a medical doctor and then complains that their health is failing. Roseman University of Health Sciences strives to teach its students the importance of emotional intelligence. Roseman University wants to graduate lifelong colleagues who recognize their own emotions and who properly regulate those emotions. Healthcare professionals must develop these skills and set the example of being poised under pressure and patient in the face of provocation. In this regard, Roseman graduates should be among the best. L. Kris Munk DDS, MS Associate Dean for Graduate Education Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine
