The Value and Importance of the Arts in Healthcare Join us on Thursday, December 9 for our

Neighborhood Health Series.

Dr. Marin Gillis will present an overview of the intrinsic and useful value of the arts in healthcare. From literature, writing, music, dance and painting, the arts serve a number of roles for patients and families, providers and students. Dr.Gillis will also explain how the arts make medical students into better doctors using examples of a program she started in Nevada in 2008 that is still running, how the arts have therapeutic benefits and can improve the quality of life for people living with dementia, and how the arts can promote health student, resident and provider wellbeing.

Inspiration

Ethics, Emotional Intelligence, and the Lifelong Colleague Commitment SUBMITTED BY DR. KRIS MUNK

Ethics has been defined as moral principles that govern behavior. Ethics is the essence of correctness and the foundation of what has traditionally been defined as good and bad or right and wrong behavior. A contemporary line of reasoning elevates ethics from assessing behavior as being good, bad, right, or wrong to assessing behavior based on whether or not the behavior was effective in achieving an honorable outcome. Ethical behavior is born of values – those moralistic ideals deemed supremely important. Values form personal preferences and identify who we are, what we do, how we think, and how we interact with others. Values determine our beliefs and attitudes about what is good, right, and worthwhile. Personal values can be organized into a values system and articulated in a Personal Principles Statement that acts as a NorthStar when navigating the ethical dilemmas of life, when making the decisions that establish ethical behavior, or when evaluating the effectiveness of a particular action. Traditionally, ethics and values have been taught in the home, in religious congregations, and in community service organizations. However, recent studies document the collapse of the family, the decline in church memberships and religious affiliations, and the reduction in volunteerism with community service organizations. If this trend continues, greater and greater responsibility will be placed on academic institutions to make up the loss in instruction in ethics and in defining ethical behavior. Rather than deferring the relevance of ethics and ethical behavior to Risk Management Seminars or State Licensing Boards, academic healthcare

institutions will need to incorporate more instruction pertaining to ethics in the healthcare curricula. They will need to develop a deeper dive into what ethical behavior looks like, not just in theory, but in practice. They will need to help students better evaluate whether or not a particular behavior was effective in achieving an ethical outcome.

Roseman University of Health Sciences understands the critical need to increase awareness of ethics and to develop ethical behavior to the rising generation of AEODO healthcare professionals. Instruction in ethics and professionalism is emphasized inBusiness the curriculum of Dental Medicine every college in Roseman University, and topics Family Practitioner (MSN) pertaining to ethics, ethicalNurse decision making, Nursing emotional intelligence, values, professionalism, and Pharmacyare Roseman’s lifelong colleague commitment Discovery highlighted on a weekly basis throughout the Journals & E-Books University. In a recent Interprofessional Ethics Course, All Databases & Resources students from the College of Dental Medicine, the

Inspiration College of Nursing, and the College of Pharmacy got together to review case studies in ethics and to discuss common principles of ethics and codes of professional conduct as outlined by their respective national organizations. At the conclusion of the course, students commended the presenters and course coordinators for a thought-provoking experience. Such is the culture at Roseman University. The impact of Roseman University’s emphasis on ethics, emotional intelligence, and professionalism endures even after students graduate and begin their healthcare careers. Comments from a recent graduate from the College of Dental Medicine speak to this abiding influence: “I graduated proudly in the class of 2017. I am very appreciative of the clinical and emotional intelligence instruction that the Roseman curriculum instilled in me! In a short amount of time I have risen to become the clinical director of 10 offices. I am now managing more than 100 employees and I honestly believe that if I attended a different school, with different key faculty, I wouldn’t be here today.” Those who deliver healthcare based on ethics, values, and professionalism, and who effectively apply the principles of emotional intelligence will consistently rise to the top and become the healthcare leaders of tomorrow.
