Students’ scenes are rehearsed under the trained eye of professional Hollywood directors with continuous feedback on their performance. Acting Acting technique is what you learn, make your own, and then make invisible so that you can live in the moment in a character’s life. Perhaps Sanford Meisner said it best when he said acting is “living truthfully under imaginary circumstances.” That imperative doesn’t change whether you are on stage or in front of a camera. It’s just about adjusting to the medium. Students in our acting classes will benefit from exposure to well-known and respected acting techniques which are intertwined because their creators learned from one another.
You will be exposed to the Method and Meisner Technique, and the work of The Groundling Theater founded by David Mamet. Your TFT instructors are passionate about their craft and they will instill in you a deep reverence for your art. You will learn to bring yourself to the role while creating a believable character to move an audience.

and emotional commitment to the intention of the actor. Actors also benefit from a physical and playful component to their training. Students receive training in combat, clowning and mask work. To additionally hone ensemble work, Comedy Improv has been added as a stand alone week of training. Students work with TFT faculty who have years of professional theatrical credits. High School juniors through college freshman ready for a more rigorous intensive will benefit from two weeks work with the inspiring faculty of the Acting Conservatory.
acting for the stage
acting for the camera
Acting for the Stage workshops, focuses the actor on their craft in front of a live audience. It is the foundation for acting in all mediums. Students get in touch with the internal life of the actor to develop truthful understanding
The camera never lies! That’s a true admonition to the actor. The camera looks deep into the eyes of the actor seeing every nuance of character. If the actor is not deeply engaged in a truthful performance the camera records every millisecond of the lie. To work successfully in front of the
This is a one-of-a-kind UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television Arts Camp Workshop. The art and craft of sitcom acting is significantly different than acting for the big screen and this workshop teaches the actor those specific techniques. It is a world of timing and nuances and the students will spend their time working with an award-winning actress that has it all. The workshop is patterned after the real production timeline of a Sitcom series where actors must prepare and tape an episode each week. In the last days of the workshop students will tape a scene in a television studio from a sitcom written and produced specifically for them. Industry guests will visit throughout the two weeks. See also Sit Com Writing/Producing.

Dance Do dancers go to college? You bet they do! And at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film, and Television it is dance for the musical theater stage where actors hone their dance skills, dancers push their limits, and singers become a “triple threat.” To add to that diversity of talent and repertoire, dancers have the opportunity to expand their dance knowledge to the ever popular genre of Hip Hop Dance proving that dancers can do it all! That is the atmosphere that you will enter this summer when you choose a Dance Workshop…and it is the atmosphere that is waiting for you if when you decide to go to college. No matter which dance intensive you choose you will be challenged in daily technique classes, choreography, and performance styles. You will gain stage presence and leave with confidence knowing that your skills have improved and you can quickly pick up choreography by professional choreographers. The faculty has experience as professional choreographers, dancers, and artistic directors and they are waiting to share their expertise with you. Flexibility as a dancer is more than physical elasticity. It is intellectual as well. Move out of your comfort zone this summer. Try new techniques and build your dance resume. The actor who can sing and dance, the singer who can dance and act, the dancer who can act and sing…that “triple threat” performer is what makes the magic that is called musical theater. The Musical Theater workshop hones the skill of all three disciplines. Our workshops focus on the process of the development of the craft and not on the product or the production of a show. The “real deal” professional faculty has a keen eye for nudging talent forward. With years of Broadway and teaching experience, they know what is needed to succeed. We offer workshops for all levels and with varying degrees of intensity. You can sing, dance and act your heart out for one solid week of training. Those who feel ready for a more intense training session can audition for the three week Musical Theater Conservatory. There you will experience the excitement of simulating a musical in workshop development.

Playwriting/Screenwriting
No matter which program you choose it will end in a “work in progress” showing what you’ve accomplished.
It all starts with the idea and the white page. Developing your voice as a writer is key. Understanding dramatic structure, plot and character is essential. playwriting/screenwriting
Effective creative writing is the basis of all narrative presentation whether it is a theatrical play, a big screen epic or a television presentation. Students will be immersed in the study of character, structure, form and plot for short and full-length plays, screenplays, and teleplays. Participants will develop, discuss, write, and perform the written word bringing their own imagination to the character and plot of each story. Students will see their scenes performed by actors who will give life to the written word and some scenes will be chosen to present at the “work in progress” at the end of the workshop. advanced playwriting/screenwriting
For the older writer who has developed experience in creating a narrative presentation, the Advanced Playwriting/Screenwriting workshop will further their knowledge of dramatic structure in short and full length plays and screenplays. With more time to write the student will develop their plays on a more advanced level while working with their peers in constructive critique and feedback. Guest screenwriters often drop by to spend the day with students reviewing their work.
The faculty of these workshops is comprised of professional awardwinning writers...

Digital Filmmaking The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television is one of the top three schools in the world in the training of the next generation of storytellers. It’s department of Film, Television and Digital Media is recognized both nationally and internationally. The UCLA Arts Camp Workshops share the same tenets as the School in training its next generation of media storytellers. Students benefit from improved writing skills, the ability to work as part of a team, a real professional knowledge of filmmaking, and a large group of networking friends.
one week workshop
Students in the one week digital film workshops take a journey through the entire creative process of making a film beyond home movies. Students are guided through the process from inception to screening by UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television faculty who are professional filmmakers. Students work collaboratively to write, direct, shoot, and edit their film. Students learn the finer points of editing on Final Cut Pro. This true-to-life collaborative approach teaches the rigors of filmmaking as well as the exhilaration of seeing the finished project projected on the big screen.
two week advanced digital film
Students who are interested in film have generally had a camera in their hands making movies for years. This workshop honors the student’s previous work and takes them further into the creative process teaching them professional secrets to enhance their narrative work. Award winning TFT faculty filmmakers share their knowledge to further the student’s craft in their editing and storytelling abilities. Students learn to make their voice heard as they work collaboratively as a team to tell a story.
traditional
computer animation
Traditional animation is the foundation of animation for learning the principles and techniques of telling an animated story. The student will spend each day completing exercises that will naturally lead them through pre-production, production, and completion of their own animated short. Inspiration flows when you sit at the desks of the great animators of history. Students leave this workshop feeling the accomplishment of a professional. You don’t have to be an artist to learn this craft. Bring a willingness to have creative fun and we guarantee the rest!
Story. Story. Story. That’s what is at the heart of a great animated movie. The original animators used pen and paper to visually translate their story. Today the animator has another tool: the computer. Based on traditional animation, which is the pre-requisite for the Computer Animation workshop, the computer animator will find new dimensions in animated storytelling. Inspired by the same computer labs that generated such animated hit films as Monster House and 9, each participant will complete several short films. Enrollment limited.
