2021 INDUCTEES TO THE POLO HALL OF FAME

JULIO ARELLANO Elected Feb. 12, 2021

Growing up as a second-generation polo player in Wellington, Florida, Julio Arellano rose to stardom as an outstanding player and horseman; achieving 9 goals in 2003; and maintaining a 7 to 9-goal handicap for decades. He amassed enviable records that include three U.S. Open titles and the USPA’s C.V. Whitney, Gold, Silver and Monty Waterbury Cups. Julio represented the United States in the legendary F.I.P and Westchester international matches. His mares were chosen for the Best Playing Pony award of the U.S. Open in 2001, 2005 and 2010. A consummate sportsman, he coached numerous teams and mentored many aspiring men and women. Julio was elected to the USPA Board of Governors, serving as a Governor-at-Large. JOHN F. “JACK” IVORY Elected Feb. 12, 2021

At age 10, John F. “Jack” Ivory began his polo career in the Detroit area. As a hardhitting teenager, he was dubbed the “boy wonder” of Midwest polo. After serving in World War I, he ascended on the national scene to help revive the sport in the post-war era. Jack was best known as the fearless, hard-riding captain of the Ivory Rangers. By 1955, he achieved a 7-goal outdoor rating and an 8-goal indoor rating. During his career, Jack was a player-manager in Detroit, Chicago, Aiken, San Antonio, and Delray Beach. An energetic and innovative promoter, he worked tirelessly to make high-goal polo accessible to wider audiences around the country. Jack retired from the sport in 1993 as the “grand old man” of Michigan polo.

PHILIP IGLEHART AWARD FOR LIFETIME CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SPORT OF POLO

BERT B. BEVERIDGE Elected Feb. 12, 2021 PAUL WOLLENMAN Elected Feb. 12, 2021

Starting polo in the late 1930s, Bert Beveridge remained committed for over 30 years, helping to invigorate the sport throughout the 1950s and ‘60s as it struggled to come back after WWII. In those pivotal times Beveridge was instrumental in rejuvenating San Antonio Polo Club, keeping it alive and thriving, and went on to help found, develop and run Boca Raton Polo Club. He sponsored many teams in the major high- and medium-goal tournaments around the country giving several noted players their start in polo. A 3-goal player, he was remembered as a formidable back notching major American tournament wins of the Twenty Goal (now the Silver Cup) twice, the Butler National Handicap, the 12-goal Inter-circuit Cup and was a finalist in the U.S. Open.

During a career that spans 48 years, Paul Wollenman’s expertise as a veterinarian caring for the horses of some of the nation’s finest polo teams has been an important factor in helping the sport of polo. Noted for his sound, practical advice as well as ingenious solutions to complicated injuries, he has spent most of his lifetime striving to improve the care and welfare of the horses that make polo possible. He also played polo, reaching a 2 goal handicap. Paul has served the sport by advising the USPA Equine Welfare Committee, mentoring Team USPA participants and the National Youth Tournament Series teams in Wyoming, giving lectures, and counseling young members on horse care and veterinary issues.

HORSES TO REMEMBER

SILVERADA (Current Hope x Flower Plot) Elected Feb. 12, 2021

Foaled in 1990 and originally named High Hope Silver, the stunning gray Thoroughbred mare Silverada was bred to be a racehorse, but a racing career was not her destiny. She was purchased by Judith Baker who started the handy mare in polo. Catching the attention of many renowned polo trainers and players, she was astutely purchased by Bob Daniels and played to greatness under Daniels’ pro, 10-goaler Gonzalo Heguy. In his hands, she earned the Best Playing Pony of the 1994 East Coast Open and was awarded Best Playing Pony for several other tournaments. In Argentina, Silverada was awarded the Lady Susan Townley Cup for Best Playing Pony of the 1996 Argentine Open, and the Best Type Mare trophy as part of the Best Mounted Player string in that ’96 series – a truly triumphant moment in polo history.

HORSES TO REMEMBER

LITTLE MARY Elected Feb. 12, 2021

Bred in Ireland, the much-celebrated bay pony Little Mary was imported by August Belmont and loaned to the American team to be played by Larry Waterbury as part of the legendary “Big Four” of 1909, winners of the International matches against Great Britain. Shortly after, she was injured and thought to be permanently retired, but she recovered and was once again called upon as part of the American team, winning the Internationals of 1911 and 1913.

A grand looking pony, there was nothing diminutive about Little Mary – she was a goodsized mare, standing well over 15 hands and up to any weight. She was lauded by experts as among the trinity of the three greatest polo ponies of that era. Little Mary is immortalized as part of the famed Haseltine bronze sculpture, “The Big Four”.
