The United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA), inc. the leading trade organization for tennis professionals since 1927, has rebranded to the Racquet Sports Professionals Association (RSPA). This change positions the RSPA to elevate and support a broad spectrum of careers across the entire racquet sports industry.
As the RSPA, the organization continues to expand its teaching certification program to train professionals in numerous racquet sports including tennis, pickleball, padel, squash and platform tennis. In addition to certification programs, the RSPA will offer a full spectrum of career advancement support for all racquet sports professionals, both on and off the court.
“The change from USPTA to RSPA is about staying on the cutting edge of our industry and leading change by providing the highest level of value possible to our members,” said RSPA CEO Brian Dillman. “Our racquet sports are dynamic constantly growing and adapting and as our industry moves forward, we are doing the same. The decision to rebrand and realign our values was fueled by our members. We listened closely to feedback, and the consensus was clear: we needed to expand our support to all racquet sports, both on and off the court.”
RSPA members now have access to certifications in five different racquet sports under one unified association All USPTA memberships are now considered RSPA memberships, and members certified in any racquet sport can get certified in another by attending one of the RSPA’s nationally available workshops Teaching professionals who want to get certified by the RSPA for the first time can join the association through any of our available racquet sports tennis, pickleball, padel, platform and squash The organization is also rolling out future-focused, personalized training programs that blend on-court expertise with off-court skills like business management and leadership, personal development and more
“We’re elevating the prestige of a racquet sports career with advanced personal and professional development We know that racquet sports are made up of many different people who contribute to a community to enjoy, teach, watch, support and advance the sports we love,” said Dillman “There is a wide world of opportunities for anyone who is passionate to help grow the racquet sports industry, and the RSPA, like a true ally, empowers our professionals by helping them reach their full potential both on and off the court ” About the RSPA

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
RSPA Intermountain
President Karl Jones
RSPA Intermountain
Executive Director
Leanne Palmisano
Dear Professionals,
The racquet sports industry is at a very exciting point in time Change, adapt, evolve – are just some of the words that come to mind when thinking about the current situation in our industry
From 1927 in a New York City office building to the World’s Racquets Conference in 2024, our organization has been serving the certification and educational needs of tennis professionals in this country and globally The message was clear at this year’s conference in Rancho Mirage, our core will always be tennis but we as professionals now offer so much more In line with other racquet sports playing pivotal roles in our programs, our organization is now called Racquet Sports Professional Association. When Brian Dillman, CEO, delivered the news, every detail was executed with purpose This is exemplified from the new logo, the tennis ball being in the center symbolizing our heritage, while incorporating all other offerings (pickleball, padel, platform and squash).
In addition to the huge announcement, the conference was filled with informative and charismatic speakers. The topics were broad, ranging from on court drills to off court marketing strategies There were also some deeply touching presentations, highlighted by Grand Slam Champion Murphy Jenson. Murphy spoke openly and vulnerably about his life and how he aims to assist people through his company – Weconnect Health Management
This year, we were in a fortunate position to be able to offer six scholarships to the conference It was wonderful to connect with our scholarship recipients; every one of them soaked up information and took all opportunities to network and develop relationships with other professionals Speaking of relationships, a huge thank you to the USTA Intermountain Districts and the USTA Intermountain Executive Director, Rob Scott, for matching our scholarships to help the recipients with their expenses A true collaborative effort, one which I’m personally so appreciative of.
There was a return at this year’s conference – The Division Olympics. An overall second place effort was secured by Intermountain, and first place in the individual innovation event Our division presented the new player initiative, which has done wonders to help our tennis eco-system. USTA Intermountain provides financial rewards for clubs/professionals that attract new players into the game, growing our sport from the ground up This year, the winner of the New Player Initiative Scholarship was Leon Patchett from Fort Collins Country Club in Colorado Congratulations Leon!
Lastly, a huge congratulations to all our National Awards Winners Intermountain won four awards at this year’s luncheon! Peg Connor, Marc Knutila, Kendall Chitamber and Roeland Brateanu all picked up awards for their contributions Thank you for so much, for the tremendous work you have done and will continue to do
As we embrace change, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or our Board with any questions Thank you for your support and the opportunity to serve you

Leon Patchett Director of Racquets at the Fort Collins Country Club won the trip to the WRC24.
Leon’s Takeaways from the WRC24
“Having only lived in the USA for 2 years and being a member of USPTA/RSPA as long, I was really impressed with the friendliness and willingness of other members to offer assistance and advice. In particular the regional dinner was most helpful, to be introduced to and spend time with RSPA professionals in my local area was a highlight. Being certified and teaching Pickelball and tennis I got the most out Sam Querrys and Andre Daescu’s Pickelball/tennis on court presentation. Was excellent to see the cross over of the two sports and see 2 great Pickelballers do some drills. For 4 years every November for a week in the Caribbean I would work with Murphy Jensen at a camp, so I got to know Murphy’s love of tennis and life. It was inspiring to see him bounce back from adversity and share his story. Murphy has a huge heart and passion for tennis.“
As the crisp autumn air settles in, Central Idaho’s racquets community is making the most of the final weeks of fall Players are savoring every moment on the court while also enjoying the breathtaking fall colors on the nearby trails
Recently, Sun Valley Resort hosted its 3rd Annual Wood River Pickleball Tournament at the end of September This event has continued to grow in size and popularity each year, showcasing the region's passion for the sport and attracting an increasing number of participants
As the season transitions, we prepare to move indoors for tennis and pickleball while also restarting platform tennis programming, as we gear up for the snowy winter months It's been a wonderful fall, and we're looking forward to the winter season ahead with enthusiasm

WRC24 Scholarship Winners Testimonials
Phillip
Urrutia-Colorado RSPA Member
My Takeways from the WRC24
I want to start this report by thanking the RSPA Intermountain Division and USTA Colorado for generously awarding me a scholarship to attend the 2024 World Racquets Conference. Without the support from the section/division, and from my employer (RRTC), this trip would not be possible
After spending last week surrounded by industry leaders it is obvious that the RSPA is looking forward to the future Having a player like Sam Querrey, who has competed professionally on both the pickleball and tennis tour, presenting the drills he uses to improve his game speaks to the future of racquet sports It will be interesting to see if we have more tennis players following Sam’s lead and moving into pickleball at the end of their tennis careers The tennis player sometimes see’s pickleball as a lesser sport. Tennis will always be the mother of all racquet sports but pickleball is an amazing addition to the racquet sports industry and the more we accept that as tennis coaches the greater it will be for our industry
Even though our conference opened by announcing the fusion of 5 racquet sports in one organization, the conference was still packed with great tennis presenters. I personally enjoyed the World Class Volley presentation by Walker Sahag. She reminded me of a saying that an old Master pro taught me a long time ago. The best coaches use analogies to help their students understand the game better She dropped a new one on me that I will never forget As she explained the axis of power she mentioned that the Japanese use Karate to teach the volley Those analogies really bring things together for my students. I have already shared pieces of this information and the results were outstanding.
Education is great, but connecting with past colleagues/bosses and reminding them how much they have influenced your career is just as fun As a former member of the Midwest, and New England division, it is great to reconnect with the people who have helped you progress in your career.
I look forward to the future of the racquet sports industry after this week.
As a recipient of the WRC24 scholarship I was both honored and excited at this wonderful opportunity The conference represented some of the best tennis presenters in the world as a glorious location at Rancho Mirage Ultimately, tennis is a journey within various networking circles who share passion for a game we all love
As a 30 year RSPA professional I couldn't wait to participate in many 2024 World Conference activities. It had been many years since my last world conference in Orlando. I was curious about how the organization, our members, and the tennis community has changed My first presentation was on Pickleball by Cathy Nicoloff past president Hawaii section The emergence of racket sports professionals was so inspiring She did an excellent presentation packed with knowledge and fun enthusiasm I attended many presentations including the Diversity and Inclusion panel which opened many eyes
My key takeaways were the RSPA has leveraged itself ahead of the pack in terms of being inclusive of other sports
The audience is more diverse than ever in terms sports, culture, and experience. My second major take away is the excitement of the respective sports within the RSPA. The professionals showcased high professional integrity and were so open and approachable through the conference. An additional takeaway was the immense networking. Everyone in our divisional party and thought sections were so friendly and kind The national staff was incredible
My most memorable part of the conference was two key parts The Intermountain division party was a true highlight
The location along with getting to meet tennis pros and staff from across the division was special Additionally the communication through the event reunited with lifelong friends and made new ones!

My Takeaways from the WRC24
1 Kamau Murray's presentation was by far one of my favorite ones Prior to becoming a coach, he was working on growing a professional corporate career This reminded me of my own beginning with coaching and made me feel more connected to the presentation. I loved how sincere Kamau was. He showed us how much he actually cares about winning, and how important it is I feel that lately coaches have been trying to focus on the journey, but at the end of the day winning is the destination It's okay to focus on it He also gave us one of the best pieces of advice I heard all week, and that was to know what our personal worth is, and to not let it be diminished
2. Padel and Pickleball can coexist with Tennis. It was great to see presentations from Allistar McCaw, Marcos del Pilar, and professional pickleball players I loved that Alistar shared his own personal experience He went from not being very optimistic about pickleball to developing a love for the game, and seeing the need to keep evolving and not getting stuck in our old ways.
Marcos del Pilar single handedly got me loving padel in just a couple sessions Not sure if it was me trying the sport with him during his presentations, or just feeding from his positive energy I'm currently teaching my wife how to play tennis through pickleball, and it's the best progress I've seen for a beginner I believe this will open new avenues of revenue and grow in the sports
3 Cardio tennis I loved how we got to try Cardio tennis as a product It gave me new ideas that I'm starting to implement this October in Utah The coaches running the cardio were phenomenal!
Most Memorable
The change from USPTA to RSPA
It was very exciting to see how we will be able to get certified in all racket sports through RSPA. They’re surely giving us the tools to thrive by letting us get our certification in more than one sport We will be able to create new sources of income and grow racket sports in our areas I loved that our CEO was very approachable and easy to talk to I met him during the trade show, and he was very open to feedback and to get to know me.
