USPTA SOUTHWEST OFFICERS PRESIDENT Laurie Martin is in her 17th year as the head coach at Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix, Arizona. During her tenure, she has fought hard to run a no-cut program for the freshman, JV & varsity teams. Coach Martin’s teams have won 5 State Championships, 5 State Runner-Up titles and 5 Top-Four Finishes. Coach Martin is a founding member of the Arizona Tennis Coaches Association and is currently serving as the Past President. She is also currently serving as an At-Large Director for the USTA Southwest and as President on the Southwest USPTA board of directors where she continues to volunteer her time to help grow tennis in the Phoenix metropolitan area. In 2019 she was appointed chairman of USTA of the National USTA High School committee and is currently serving as chair for a 2nd term. She has been recognized for her efforts on and off the court by being named the 2021 NFHS Arizona High School Coach of the Year, 2017 NHSCA Tennis Coach of the Year Finalist, 2015 Tennis Industry’s Magazine National High School Coach of the Year, 2015 National High School Coaches Association National Girls Tennis Coach of the Year, and the 2008 USPTA National High School Coach of the Year. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, 4 kids and 4 grandkids.
REGIONAL VICE PRESIDENT Amy Badger was born in Wisconsin into an Army family. Her interest in tennis began with the family’s last move to Florida. Amy played for the Lobos and made New Mexico her home. She worked in banking, with tax and estate planning law firms and eventually private consulting in the employee benefits retirement planning area. She’s been the Head Coach of the Albuquerque Academy Girls Tennis program since 2001 and oversees their middle school tennis program since 2008. Amy is the Tennis Director at Highpoint Sports and Wellness. She is also a member of the USTA NNM Regional Council and National board member of the USTA Local Play and Competition Committee. She enjoys her off time with daughter Ava.
VICE PRESIDENT Suk Ong is a Teaching Professional at the public parks at Kiwanis recreation Center and with Limitless Academy at Scottsdale Ranch Park Tennis Center. Her passion and attitude, combined with her playing and coaching ability, makes her uniquely to coach all ages and level of players in the 10 & under age group, cardio tennis, doubles strategy and other adult classes and helps to promote the program. Outside of the tennis facilities, she also involves in tennis organizations. She had served as a member of the USTA Central Arizona (CAZ) Junior Council Committee and USTA CAS Community Tennis Committee as a USPTA representative. She continuously a member of the USTA Southwest Coaches Commission, and a NET Generation coach that assisted in coaching the USTA SWS EDC camps as well as the sectional junior team tennis. Suk also served in SW chairs in Awards and Diversity and Inclusive as well as National Committee in both. She is a USPTA Southwest board member serving as Treasurer, Secretary, and currently VP. She was awarded the USPTA Southwest Star Award in 2013 and the USPTA Southwest Diversity Award in 2016. Suk grew up in Malaysia and was recruited to play college
tennis at Lewis Clark State College, Lewiston, Idaho. Outside of that, she likes to do outdoor activities such as hiking and camping with her husband and two children.
SECRETARY Dr. Gregory Prudhomme is the Head Tennis Coach at Grand Canyon University, a Mental Performance Coach for athletes and career professionals, and is a university sport psychology instructor. Prudhomme was a Division I scholarship tennis player, held a world ranking for 3 years, was ranked as high as #11 in the US, and he was ranked #1 in the Southwest Section in singles, doubles, and mixed. During his time as a college coach, he has earned ten NCAA Division I conference championships, qualified for the nationals on multiple times, and been voted ‘coach of the year’ on numerous occasions. He has won ‘National College Coach of the Year from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and the United States Professional Tennis Association. Prudhomme is often a guest speaker in the areas of tennis and mental performance. He has spoken nationally and regionally at organizations including the USPTA, USTA, Xendurance, the International Sport Sciences Association, Tignum, and more. Prudhomme earned his PhD in Psychology with an Emphasis in Performance Psychology, he is an Elite-certified USPTA Professional, and has earned the USTA High-Performance Coaching Degree. Prudhomme’s wife, Mandy, and two daughters, Tatum & Autum, are certified USPTA Professionals while their youngest child, Liam, is a competitive tennis player following in their footsteps.
TREASURER Ryan is currently serving as the Director of Racquet Sports for Desert Mountain Club. Prior to joining Desert Mountain, Ryan was the Director of Tennis at Camelback Village Racquet & Health Club in Phoenix. He has previously worked as the Head Tennis Professional at Seattle Tennis Club and Teaching Professional at Old Providence Racquet Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. He also served as the Volunteer Assistant Coach for the Men’s Tennis Team at the University of Arizona from 2009-2011. A scholarship tennis player and team captain at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Ryan is listed in the all-time Top 10 for single season doubles wins. His senior season, he led his team to a Conference Title and NCAA Tournament Appearance. Ryan is certified as an Elite Professional with the USPTA and Adult Professional with PTR. He is also certified with the International Federation of Pickleball (IFP), Professional Pickleball Registry (PPR) and member of the USA Pickleball Association. He is currently serving as the USPTA Head Pickleball Tester for the Southwest. Ryan recently completed the Certified Racquet Sports Executive Program and now holds the CRSE designation. He has also earned the distinction of being RacquetFit Certified from the founders of the Titleist Performance Institute. In 2021, Ryan was nominated and awarded by his peers as the Southwest Section and National USPTA Elevate Professional of the Year. He is also a New Balance Ambassador, Wilson Ad Staff Member, and Selkirk Ambassador. Before returning to the tennis industry full-time, Ryan was an attorney in the litigation group for K&L Gates in Seattle and the Hatcher Law Group in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is licensed in North Carolina and Washington.
PAST PRESIDENT Dave Moyer is the current Past President of the USPTA Southwest and a USPTA Master Professional. He became a USPTA member in 1996 and is currently the Director of Racquet Sports at The Country Club at DC Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona where he has been since 2011. During his tenure at The Country Club at DC Ranch, he has been able to grow the tennis program
from a small, one-person operation, into a thriving tennis program with five USPTA professionals. Participation of both adults and juniors has grown each year. Since 2011, junior participation by 600% and adult participation has more than doubled with nine ladies league teams playing at a six-court facility. He has also seen the improvement of the facilities with the addition of lighting on all six courts and the construction of a new tennis shop to host offices, merchandise, meeting space and bathroom facilities, a new ramada and patio area for viewing and socializing as well as cameras on two courts for analyzing matches and lessons. Before coming to the Southwest, Dave was the Director of Tennis at Homestead Country Club in the Kansas City area, and Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. At both stops, he was highly involved in both the USPTA and USTA and his hard work earned him much recognition. Beginning in 1996, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Missouri Valley Division where he served for three years. He was named the Nebraska and Kansas Tennis Professional of the year and received the Lessons for Life Award. The USTA recognized him for Tournament of the Year, Facility of the Year and Family of the Year during his tenure in the Missouri Valley. In 2019, Dave was named the Alex Gordon USPTA Southwest Tennis Professional of the Year. Dave is a graduate of the University of Nebraska and is married to Wendy Moyer. Together they have two boys ages 15 and 12.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Jack Michalko is currently the Executive Director for the USPTA Southwest Division, a position he has had for over 32 years. He also served four years as a vice president on the USPTA National Board of Directors and was chairman of the USPTA National Membership Committee. Michalko received the USPTA National President’s Paul Waldman Award in 2017. Jack was the Director of Tennis at the Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona for 39 years retiring in 2009. Michalko is a former two-term USPTA Southwest Division President and was the Southwest Pro of the Year in 1984, 2004 and again in 2016. Jack was also inducted into the USTA Central Arizona Hall of Fame in 2010. He has served on the USPTA’s National Awards Committee and was chairman of the USPTA National Nominating Committee. Michalko was presented Tennis Buyer’s Guide “America’s Best Retailer” Award in 1989. Jack has lectured at the 1998 and 1999 USPTA World Conferences in La Quinta California and Miami, Florida, the USPTA Northwest Division’s Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Intermountain Division’s Convention in Vail, Colorado, New England Division Conference in Norwich, Connecticut and the Southwest USPTA/USTA Tennis Teacher’s Conferences in Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona. He and his wife Rita will celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary in June and have two grown children and a six-year-old granddaughter.
NORTHERN ARIZONA DISTRICT COORDINATOR Andrea Meyer grudgingly began playing tennis in Tucson as a high school freshman. “I knew nothing about tennis but was sure that it was a supremely sissy sport, a real cinch. Thirty minutes later and with an aching wrist, I had reversed my opinions and fallen in love,” she recalls. She holds a BA and M Ed from the UA where part of her coursework was in athletic coaching. After retiring from teaching high school English and PE, Andrea became a USPTA professional and has coached the Mingus Union girls' team for many years, JTT teams, and teaches Tennis in the Schools for the USTA in the Verde Valley. Andrea was selected as the SW USPTA High School Coach of the Year in 2019.
SOUTHEASTERN ARIZONA DISTRICT COORDINATOR John Perry is currently the director of tennis of Smith-Perry Tennis Academy and Tucson Tennis Management, in charge of running Reffkin Tennis Center (formerly Randolph Tennis Center). John has been at Reffkin for over 24 years and has been a USPTA professional since 1996. He received the USPTA Industry Excellence Award in 2019. John travels throughout the year to nearly all the major tennis events in the Southwest as a coach of players at every level including ATP professional, ITF Wheelchair professional, USTA nationally ranked juniors, high school and adult tournament and league players. John has coached many top juniors including dozens of #1 ranked Southwest players and 10 high school state champions. John has been heavily involved in volunteering with the USTA for the past decade in all areas of junior tennis, promoting and growing 10 and under tennis in the Southwest. He has given numerous presentations to parents, coaches, and officials on rules and sportsmanship for the past 5 years. John was presented the USTA Tournament Enrichment Award for his work with the Tucson Slam Series entry level events. John’s specialty is the mental game of tennis, having completed a master’s degree in sport psychology from the University of Arizona. Prior to that he attained a bachelor’s degree in psychology from New Mexico State University where he was a member of the tennis team, playing number one singles and doubles. John was the New Mexico High School State singles champion in 1989. Currently he has been competing in USTA league tennis for the past ten years, advancing to Nationals 3 times at the 5.0 level. With fellow USPTA pro Jonathan Davis he won the Tucson City Championships Open Men’s Doubles and has been ranked in the top 25 Nationally in Men’s 40s doubles. John has been married to his wife Janelle for over 25 years. They have three sons, Brendan, Jared, and Stefan (all tennis players) and they received the USTA Southwest Tennis Family of the Year award in January 2018.
NORTHERN NEW MEXICO DISTRICT COORDINATOR Dick Johnson is the District Coordinator for Northern New Mexico and is a past president of the SWPTA. He has been the USTA Northern New Mexico president on 3 occasions. He was named to the USTA Southwest Hall of Fame in 2008, In 2016 he was named the USPTA National High School Coach of the Year, and this past year was named the High School Coach of the Year by the NHSACA. Also in 2019, La Cueva honored Johnson by naming him to the schools' Hall of Fame. He is entering his 30th year as the Boys Coach at La Cueva High School and his Boys Teams have won the 5-A State Championship 6 of the past 7 years. Johnson has been a member of the USPTA for 43 years and continues be extremely active in his community. He currently heads up the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame which raises close to $100,000 each year and distributes scholarships to over twenty athletes annually. This year the organization will also be raising money for its past-president Gene Pino who is stricken with ALS. Coach Johnson has spoken over 10 times the past 15 years and is currently working on a book that hopefully will come out next year. He has 3 tennis camps during the year and has taught over 2,500 kids during his time as a USPTA Elite pro. Along with fellow USPTA member, Amy Badger, they are starting a New Mexico Showcase for players throughout the state. At this writing, 25 schools have participated. Johnson and his wife, Marcie, have been married 48 years and enjoy traveling and their two Shi-Tzu pups Gizmo and LuLu.
PHOENIX Leslie Banks has been playing tennis since she was 3 years old, having grown up in a tennis family in rural Ohio. From ages 8 to 18, she competed in junior tournaments, singles and doubles, in Northwest Ohio and elsewhere in the Midwest, and on her high school team for four years. She earned a full scholarship for tennis to play for a Division-I college in Ohio and then Idaho. Throughout her under-grad and graduate years, she taught tennis in local junior programs during the summer. Before moving to the Phoenix area last June, Leslie lived in Houston, TX for 13 years. She is a USPTA certified professional and Net Generation USTA coach. She has successfully coached children from a young age into their high school years. While in Houston, she spent 11 years running adult and junior programs at one of the largest tennis facilities in the city, Club Westside. She then became the Junior Program Director at Lakeside Country Club where she revitalized the program after a natural disaster. Since moving to Arizona with her husband in 2019, Leslie coached in both public and private Scottsdale venues, and directed a non-profit summer tennis camp during the pandemic for underserved high school students in the Phoenix Union School District. While administering the tennis camp, she became increasingly passionate about creating a more encompassing program to help and elevate these hardworking, inspiring teenagers through the game of tennis.
