April 2024 SPRING EDITION

Meet the USPTA Intermountain Board of Directors

KARL JONES - PRESIDENT

My passion for growing tennis was not an epiphany moment, rather a delayed experience over time It wasn’t until it became about serving others that I truly became ingrained in the fabric of this great sport I have had the distinct honor of being on the receiving end of some wonderful mentorship along my journey Now I’m so excited to play a small part in serving tennis professionals with the tools to grow their careers These tools include mentorship to younger professionals, on court education ranging from on court to management, and the ability to network and form lifelong relationships Thank you to the USPTA for providing this wonderful platform!

LAURIE LAMBERT - TREASURER

I believe that our sport needs educated people delivering the tennis experience, so I wanted to support the USPTA to help educate tennis instructors to be the best that they can be for our players!

MATT HELM - REGIONAL VICE PRESIDENT

I serve on the USPTA Board because I want to strengthen and support the organization that has impacted my tennis career in such a positive and influencing way.

GINGER PHILLIPS - SECRETARY

Serving on the Intermountain Board is a privilege as I get to work with such a wonderful group of USPTA pros, learn about and participate in Intermountain USPTA happenings, communicate and share ideas and stay involved off of the tennis court.

DAN MACCANELLOVICE PRESIDENT

ANDY ZODIN - PAST PRESIDENT

Serving on the Board, for myself in particular, has been an effort to contribute to the industry in the most effective ways I know how, as this industry has given me so much. Helping Intermountain tennis continue to grow, improve, and evolve with the times has been very satisfying to be a part of. Working with the tremendous people of the USPTA and USTA during my tenure, has been the icing on the cake.

KAREN SCHOTT - VICE PRESIDENT

Giving back to a sport that has enriched my education, my career and my personal life is a privilege. I am excited to strengthen the relationships of tennis and pickleball professionals in our Division and to mentor young pros. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

USPTA Intermountain President Karl Jones

Dear Professionals,

I hope you all had a wonderful start to the year. So far, 2024 has seen some considerable changes for the USPTA We have a new CEO, Brian Dillman, and a new National President, Trish Faulkner At the Intermountain level, our new Executive Director, Leanne Palmisano, and myself serving as President. A special thanks to Tom Van De Hey, who served as our Executive Director, and Andy Zodin, our former President, who stepped down after many successful years serving the USPTA and its professionals. This process was not done overnight, with Tom and Andy providing training and support for both Leanne and me to provide the smoothest transition possible for our members. Thank you both so much!

Part of our 2024 Strategic Plan is to showcase a career in racquet sports as not only legitimate but rewarding and fashionable We aim to promote our industry to young, inspiring professionals through the true essence of what we do – building relationships Our division is unique in that it covers 6 states, and 629,000 square miles Getting every professional interested in attending our divisional conference provides some challenges Our virtual conference back in February aimed to serve our members, with information and personalities covering a wide range of topics from presenters, who specialize in their fields However, to serve the need for in-person interaction, we will hold events in all 6 of our districts We have a team of excellent District Presidents working on bringing people together in the spirit of community, knowledge sharing and showing young people how exciting this industry is to be part of

Already this year, Chris Painter, in Las Vegas hosted an event at Top Golf Over 40 pros and guests attended a fun event with special guest speaker, Kris Johnson, from Wilson Racquet Sports who spoke about the importance of relationships and turning a passion into a profession There have also been educational events in Idaho and upcoming events in Utah and Colorado. A shoutout must go to USPTA professional, Mike Phillips, for his diligence in providing consistent education Based at the Denver Tennis Park he has hosted events with both informative and dynamic speakers for the entire community

At the start of the year, congratulations were given to our own Marshall Carpenter Marshall was offered the position of Director of Tennis at the Congressional Country Club in Maryland It is a wonderful opportunity for Marshall and his family, we are immensely proud, and wish him all the best With Marshall’s departure from Intermountain, I am delighted to announce that Karen Schott, Director of Racquet Sports at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, has agreed to step up to the Board Taking her place as Colorado District President is Damon Gillette. I am excited to have such a talented team of people together to help serve, grow, and develop our membership

Lastly, I will be attending the USPTA Executive Committee Meetings in Orlando, Florida alongside our Regional Vice President, Matt Helm, and Executive Director, Leanne. I look forward to sharing with you a recap in our next edition of the Newsletter

It is an honor to serve you, thank you for the opportunity

USPTA Intermountain Pickleball

Pickleball Perspective and the USPTA

Pickleball has been around for many decades The explosive growth of pickleball in the last twenty years is unprecedented Anyone who takes a hard look at the reasons for the tremendous appeal of pickleball to new players will come away with the conclusion that pickleball is an immensely powerful economic force that is not going away anytime soon The white hot growth of pickleball is going to continue I have been a tennis professional for forty seven years When I began my pickleball career fifteen years ago, I told my colleagues in the tennis industry that we needed to figure out how we would coexist and thrive with pickleball as part of our sports community

I have always felt that both sports should be feeding each other Car dealerships compete for the same clients but are always located on the same street. Some in the tennis industry have taken an adversarial position towards pickleball The conversion of tennis courts to pickleball courts and the sound of a pickleball on a paddle are controversial subjects Like it or not, the economic opportunities and the immense popularity of the sport means these uncomfortable byproducts of pickleball are here to stay.

We can’t deny that the other professional organizations that train/certify pickleball professionals have been embracing pickleball for many more years than the USPTA. As an organization, we have some catching up to do. The good news is that some very talented USPTA professionals have been hard at work establishing a new curriculum with a great protocol and set of prerequisites that will give our certified members a higher level of status within the pickleball industry.

I have a saying, “There are over ten million pickleball players in the U S Nine million of them are currently teaching pickleball lessons ” Perhaps overstated, but the very short path to becoming a pickleball player has left us with a huge population of people who are now fair instructors, but not true professionals. Tennis never saw this huge influx of new instructors cashing in on the gold rush that is pickleball Tennis is far more difficult to master “Simple to learn” has left us with a large population of instructors who think it’s “simple to teach”

We need the people who are looking to take pickleball lessons to see the highest level USPTA pickleball professional as someone who offers a very different product than their certified neighbor down the street The first step the USPTA is going to take will be to begin offering certification courses to non USPTA members. This should be a reality by May of this year I believe that somewhere in the future, the USPTA will establish a Master Professional status

The pickleball playing public is in dire need of the ability to hire a true teaching professional with extensive teaching and playing experience Finding that level of a pickleball professional is not readily available to them at this time It is my hope that a USPTA Master Pickleball Professional certification will eventually be widely known as the gold standard of the pickleball industry

Tennis on Campus

USTA Tennis On Campus is designed to provide college students with a host of opportunities for team camaraderie, social networking and unrivaled competition through tennis without the demands of a varsity program. The fun co-ed format using the Impact Team Tennis rules is designed to accommodate all levels of play, and the top teams can compete for regional and national championships Tennis On Campus helps students maintain active and healthy lifestyles through their college years and helps them to stay connected to tennis

After Covid, a lot of teams had to restart their programs, but we have seen a growth in teams and players. In 2024 we will add Colorado Mesa into the mix of teams that are currently active within Intermountain getting us to 14 unique schools. Each team varies with the amount of players that are active on their team Teams are co-ed as each match consists of Men/Women singles, Men/Women doubles and one mixed court for each team match Teams can range from 10 players to 30 plus players Intermountain has over 300 students engaged in Tennis on Campus throughout the year. Each team is responsible for running their own practice, designating a president, complying with their college club rules, travel to and from tournaments, fundraising, and much more. Tennis on Campus is truly a student run program. Presidents/Captains are the true heroes of this program

Throughout the year, teams are able to participate in other tournaments to get them ready for Sectionals. University of Colorado at Colorado Springs runs their own invitational every year that is promoted throughout our section and other sections, which usually fills a full 32 draw in October. Teams have the opportunity to attend Fall Invitationals (two opportunities) hosted by sections where the winner gets an extra bid to the National Championship There is also a Spring Invitational in March for teams that did not qualify for the National Championship The National Championship switches location each year The 2024 Championship was held in Rome, Georgia, April 4-6

USTA Intermountain’s Tennis on Campus Sectional Championships were held February 9-10, 2024, in Eagle, Idaho at Eagle Tennis Club Thirteen unique schools and 16 teams participated with a total of 130 players Unique schools included Boise State University, Brigham Young University, Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State University, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, University of Colorado Boulder, University of Denver, University of Northern Colorado, University of Utah, University of Wyoming, Utah Valley University, Weber State University and Utah State University.

Intermountain gets 3 bids to the National Championship based on the number of unique schools that attend our Sectional Championship For the 2024 National Championship in Rome, Georgia, the following teams will attend: University of Colorado Boulder, University of Wyoming, and the University of Utah They fought their way through pool play and took care of business in bracket play. Good Luck Team Intermountain!
