DYNAMIC NEW SPACE In fall 2020, the USP Program moves to its new home in the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood. This sustainable, mixed-use community of housing, classrooms, offices, and retail shops features state-of-the-art technology for RED students and faculty. The setting will also host alumni and community partners. Central to our new space is a design studio and adjoining geographic information system (GIS) and visualization lab. This dynamic neighborhood, including restaurants open late into the evening, will be a hub of constant activity.

CAREERS RED graduates pursue a variety of career tracks, including real estate development, finance, law, and investment; architecture and design; urban data analysis; and urban planning. Students also pursue graduate degrees in law, real estate, architecture, and urban planning at top programs, including UC Berkeley; UCLA; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Harvard, Cornell, and Columbia Universities; University of Southern California; and the University of Pennsylvania. Our strong network of alumni and industry leaders in the field provides students with plenty of networking and mentorship opportunities.

REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT A MAJOR IN THE URBAN STUDIES AND PLANNING PROGRAM

We use the UC San Diego campus as our living and learning laboratory

TAPPING MULTIPLE SKILLS Our bachelor of science in real estate and devlopment is broad and interdisciplinary, responding to real estate and development’s impact on people’s lives and work. Required courses include • • • • • • • •

We take an original, twenty-first century approach to the future needs of real estate and development. We believe the next generation of innovators needs hybrid skills to connect real estate finance and development with data visualization and analysis, urban planning and design, sustainability, demographic trends, and new technologies.

“One of the best features of the new major in real estate and development is the capstone project. Each student gains hands-on experience doing a real-world project guided by outstanding faculty. The capstone project’s team-based activities give students leading-edge professional knowledge and vital research skills.”

Beyond the classroom, the RED major fosters a wealth of professional development opportunities— for example, we look to the San Diego–Tijuana city-region as a living laboratory for hands-on, project-based learning.

—Dr. Keith Pezzoli, Director, Urban Studies and Planning Program

A UNIQUE APPROACH The real estate and development (RED) major at UC San Diego is unique. Our comprehensive undergraduate program is part of the Urban Studies and Planning (USP) Program, one of UC San Diego’s oldest and most distinguished undergraduate programs.

RED course work taps students’ qualitative, quantitative, analytical, strategic, design, and problem-solving, solutions-oriented skills, interwoven with a crosscutting commitment to principles of equity, diversity, and justice. Students can pursue either a bachelor of science or a minor in RED. An outstanding feature of the RED major is our upper-division capstone studio requirement. During a two-quarter sequence in the fall and winter of their senior year, majors work on a hands-on real estate finance and development project. Students collaborate on project-based learning teams and publicly present their findings.

INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENT RED majors stay active—on and off campus, domestically and abroad. Whether they join a professional organization (such as the Urban Land Institute or our own student real estate club) or participate in high-visibility competitions, students apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios.

Opportunities reach well beyond San Diego County. The USP Program has forged an exchange partnership with the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, the first undergraduate department-to-department international exchange program in the UC system. We are planning similar exchange programs in Asia, Latin America, and other parts of the globe.
