“Big E” History
A
fter turning over its duties to the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA 42) Sept. 28, 1962 in Soudha Bay, Crete, Enterprise once again transited the Strait of Gibraltar and crossed the Atlantic for home. “Big E” returned to Norfolk from its first overseas deployment Oct. 11, only to learn an international incident was brewing that would spring the ship immediately back into action. U.S. intelligence discovered that Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev began secretly deploying additional East Bloc forces to Cuba with missiles, some possibly nuclear, that posed an immediate threat to the United States. Enterprise would soon be called upon to play a role in a situation later known as the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Enterprise News “Big E” celebrates the life, legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Story and photos by MCSN Jesse L. Gonzalez USS Enterprise Public Affairs
USS ENTERPRISE, At sea - In a remembrance ceremony of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Jan 18, Sailors aboard the deployed aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) gathered on the mess decks to participate in a celebration of his life and legacy. “It’s because of individuals like King that men and women of different ethnicities and nationalities are able to serve today,” said Capt. Dee L. Mewbourne,

commanding officer of Enterprise. “Over the past half century, the Navy has actively sought to incorporate diversity in its ranks because it makes us stronger.” King’s legendary speeches and words have endured throughout history and are a testament to his morals and values as a man of God and a son of America. His words were remembered by Senior Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handler) (AW/SW) Earle T. Smith as he recited an excerpt from King’s famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. The crew listened in respectful silence as Smith passionately recited these historic words. As sweat dripped off Senior Chief’s face, he continued the excerpt as if he were King himself. The crowd on the mess deck grew larger, and the celebration continued with an original song written and performed by

Senior Chief Aviation Ordnanceman (AW/ SW) Larry D. Hester, the Leading Chief Petty Officer of G-5 Weapons Division, titled “The Dream.” Some Sailors’ eyes teared up as they listened. “I was inspired to write this song because of the struggle Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. endured,” said Hester. “He faced adversity and rose above the challenge.” After words from Rear Adm. Terry B. Kraft, commander of Carrier Strike Group 12 and Mewbourne, Sailors enjoyed some
well-deserved cake, ice cream and cookies. Taking a break from the mission at hand, Sailors talked amongst themselves paying tribute to King’s legacy. Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been celebrated since President Ronald Reagan signed legislation into law designating the third Monday in January as the federal holiday in 1986. He is the only American private citizen to have a federal holiday designated solely in his honor.

When away from work, Caughman enjoys reading fictional and documentary books.
FUN ZONE!
The Enterprise chorus (official name TBD) is a new opportunity for a select group of 50 Enterprise Sailors, officers and enlisted, aboard “Big E” to provide a positive outlet for musical talents at Enterprise and public events. Within this chorus will be a 12-member group that will provide chamber music for smaller events such as distinguished visitor visits and formal dinners. The style of music will be a cappella, however will include sea shanties, classical, patriotic and sacred - and of course, the National Anthem. Auditions for the Enterprise Chorus will take place Jan. 20, 21 and 22 in the Enterprise Room from 1400-1500. Please send an e-mail to EnterpriseChorus@cvn65.navy.mil to receive an audition slot. Please be prepared to sing a capella. It is not a requirement to be able to read music, however, it is mandatory for those who will be in the elite 12-member chamber group. This is a great opportunity to put your vocal talents to good use. We look forward to seeing you at the auditions.
