TR went full speed into 2017 and the work-up cycle. A mid-month underway welcomed Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17, ship qualifications, and training evolutions. The ship conducted its first launch and recovery operations, small arms and crew-served weapons shoot, underway replenishment, flight deck run, mass casualty drill, and more.
February kicked getting off underway with a Superbowl Sunday celebration. Heading toward operational readiness, TR onloaded 2.9 million pounds of ordnance during a two-day replenishment. Wanting to see the ship back in action, the former Secretary of the Navy, John F. Lehman, and his wife Barbara Lehman, the ship’s sponsor, visited the crew underway. Actor Gary Sinise, better known as “Lt. Dan,’’ also visited TR, landing on the flight deck in an EA-18G Growler.
Returning from the longest underway yet, the crew refocused on petty officer advancement exams and a welldeserved standdown period. The Multicltural Committee honored Women’s History Month and the ship underwent some final upgrades, including new hangar bay floors. TR came together to remember and celebrate the life of HTC Chad M. Gayda, a leader and role model to many Sailors.
April began with the 124th birthday celebration of the Chief Petty Officer. Capt. William Daly relieved Capt. Tom Williams as Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 23. Another underway led TR into TailoredShip’sTraining Availability and an aerial change of command ceremony for the Sunkings of VAW-116 and the Stingers of VFA-113. Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Awareness Month kicked off with a 5K on the flight deck and TR held the first ever “Bridge Talks,’’ a PACFLT initiative designed to allow Sailors of all ranks to share their ideas for the improvement of the Navy.
TR sailed into May with the strike group for Group Sail training unit exercise (GRUSL). Rear Adm. James Bynum made his final catch as Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 9, piloting an F/A-18E Super Hornet. Sailors enjoyed the extravagant amount of cinnamon rolls following the CSs’ cinnamon bake off and the month ended with the frocking of 289 new petty officers.
June welcomed 11 new TR Senior Chiefs, and Rear Adm. Steve T. Koehler relieved Rear Adm. James Bynum as Commander, CSG 9. The crew received great remarks recognizing their hard work during the Navy Department Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV). Friends and Family Day brought thousands of excited visitors as the ship displayed its purpose and capabilities. Lost Sailors were laid to rest during two burial-at-sea ceremonies on the fantail.
Sailors, families, and friends gathered on the flight deck for an Independence Day celebration where fireworks lit up San Diego Bay. TR welcomed Capt. Carlos Sardiello as commanding officer and bid farewell to Capt. Craig A. Clapperton. The crew took a breath of fresh air during leave before Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX).
Finishing the work-up cycle, the entire month of August was spent underway for COMPTUEX, the final test for TR to be considered deployment-ready. With very few no-fly days, the air wing and air department worked tirelessly and remained dedicated to the job. The Fighting Redcocks of VFA-22 completed an aerial change of command ceremony and a 5K was held to raise suicide awareness.
Sailors returned home for a pre-deployment standdown period. TR pinned new chief petty officers and master chief petty officers. Sailors bid farewell to Chaplain Bill Dorwart as he retired at 68 years old.
After months of training and preparation, TR and the crew set out for deployment with the strike group. Leaving the 3rd Fleet area of responsibility, the ship sailed into 7th Fleet and completed routine operations. The month ended with the first port call in Guam.
The Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group departed Guam following its first scheduled port visit before steaming to the Sea of Japan to commence tri-carrier operations with USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and USS Nimitz (CVN 68). Sailing through to the 5th Fleet area of operations, Sailors and Marines celebrated Thanksgiving together.
Combat operations continued in the 5th Fleet area of operations and the crew celebrated the holidays as a family underway. Rough Riders received a well-deserved port call in Dubai during Christmas. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Joe Dunford and a group of celebrities visited TR for a USO tour. TR wrapped up the year with a visit from the CNO and MCPON. A new year awaits the crew of USS Theodore Roosevelt, and the TR Family.
“The dreams of glory in the future will not come true unless, high of heart and strong of hand, by our own mighty deeds we make them come true. Theodore Roosevelt
