IMPORTANT TIPS FOR TRANSLATORS
How to get selected by a translation agency as a translator
ACCEPTANCE
There is nothing more in life that we want than acceptance. We wish to be acceptable to everyone. As kids, we want to be accepted by our parents and once we start school, we wish to be accepted by our teachers and friends. The wish to get accepted can get people to do weird things. Therefore peer pressure exists, and no one can explain why they did certain things in life to stay in their group of friends. But that is how all of us live life simply because we want to belong somewhere and be accepted by the people we like.
However, acceptance is not that easy. Maybe it comes easy with friends when we are kids but as we grow up, even friendships get harder. Everyone must fulfill some requirements in order to get accepted. People must work so hard to get accepted in the college of their choice. Some retake tests to get the right score, while some put all their efforts in writing their college essay. Many stories of heartbreak emerge when people fail to get in the college of their choice. The hardest thing to come to terms with is the fact that they were not accepted.
This cycle continues and reaches its peak when we go job hunting. The more our world progresses, the harder it becomes for people to get jobs. The requirements of each company increase and many fail to live up to the standards set up by them. Getting rejected for a job is not the same as not getting admission in a college. Earning a livelihood is far more important than getting in the institute of your choice. A lot more is at stake when you are applying for a job and therefore everyone wants to get accepted after a job interview.
THE TRANSLATION INDUSTRY
There are plenty of jobs in the field of languages but none of them is as useful as translation. It is what keeps the world going. It connects people from all over the world, something that would have been impossible without interpretation because people of earth speak more than seven thousand languages. There are many people who wish to work in this industry for plenty of reasons. There will never come a time in the world when people won’t need translations. As long as humans live on the planet, they will need translation services so someone working in this industry will not be replaced with a machine. It is also a field with plenty of work. If someone knows where to look, they can always find a project.
However, how does one get a job with a translation agency?
What is Important for a Translation Agency to Select You as a Translator?
When people go for a job interview, they are asked what they will bring to the company. The answer can decide whether they will be accepted for the position. However, the translation industry is a bit different. It is not about what a person can bring to the agency, but what they can do for the clients. It is a creative field and therefore, only those with the right skillset can prosper in it.
Even though it is a creative field that doesn’t mean anyone can work in it. Agencies have their reputations to maintain and therefore only accept qualified people for job. They can’t hire unqualified translators, or they won’t be able to provide quality work to their clients. ∙
Experience is just as important in a language service industry as qualification, if not more. Even if you are a fresh graduate and you want to start working with an agency, you must have some practice with translating documents. You can practice with books in foreign language or use newspaper articles for the task. Once you get good at translating, you can apply to an agency with full confidence.
If they can count on you to provide quality work, they will hire you happily. But if you only work when it is convenient for you and don’t do projects regularly, they can’t rely on you. An unreliable translator isa lot worse than an absent one and therefore agencies don’t hire interpreters who can’t work regularly.
Other Important Qualities Translators Should Have:
∙ Work with Deadlines: Deadlines are very important in the translation industry. Sometimes a client can send a project that they will need interpreted within a couple of hours.
A translator not used to work with deadlines will not be able to handle the pressure. And if a task is assigned to them and they don’t finish it in time, it will affect the reputation of the agency they are working for. Therefore agencies only accept interpreters who can deliver on time.
WHAT ‘S IMPORTANT
Anyone who wants to work with a translation agency should have good work ethics, the right qualification, and enough experience. It is not easy for a translation agency to trust someone with such an important task. Not to mention the fact that someone doing translations has to handle sensitive information.
So, choosing a translator is not an easy decision to make. Agencies adopt a strict hiring process to make sure they only accept the most experienced and qualified people to work with them. This is the only way they can keep their clients happy. CHECK OUT MORE INFORMATION HERE
