LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome Students, As fall semester 2021 begins, Utah State University welcomes its newest members to our Aggie Family. We are excited to have your talents, ambitions, and diversity as part of Utah State because you contribute to the vibrancy and liveliness of this great institution. The beginning of a new school year is filled with enthusiasm, new experiences and ideas, and curiosity. I hope you hold on to that inquisitiveness throughout your time at USU and beyond. We are here to ensure your success in an environment where students are able to follow their dreams, to make discoveries, and to survive failures. You will grow, not only academically, but also as a socially engaged citizen who will make a positive impact on people and communities in the future. As the land-grant institution of Utah, we are fortunate to have dedicated faculty with diverse areas of expertise in learning, discovery and outreach. Our faculty provides excellence in teaching on our main campus in Logan, at our statewide campuses, and through our many online degree offerings. Our dedication to education and learning continues to gather accolades, as the university was ranked as
the #2 public university in “National Universities Rankings 2020” by Washington Monthly and has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as having one of the nation’s top online bachelor’s degree programs for seven straight years. We are excited to welcome our continuing students back to our campuses this fall. Throughout the pandemic, our university community remained engaged and innovative – but we are all looking forward to a return to more normal conditions. The university will be offering more in-person classes and restoring activities and events, all while continuing to work closely with local health officials to monitor developments related to COVID-19 and its variants. Although some aspects of our lives have changed, I look forward to next year with hope and optimism. We are committed to making our campus a safe, healthy, and inclusive environment where you can reach your full potential. As you immerse yourself in scholarly life, be sure to also take part in the many engaging activities and events that will enrich your experience as an Aggie. Take advantage of the many recreational opportunities that are available near your campus. And also, please cheer on our Aggie student athletes! Each one of you chose Utah State University because of the opportunities that we can provide you. I am so pleased you are now part of the Aggie family, and I look forward to learning of your many accomplishments this coming year.

The benefits of studying abroad I studied abroad over 5,000 miles away from Logan, Utah in St. Petersburg, Russia. As cliché as it might sound, I can already say wholeheartedly studying abroad has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. All students at Utah State University should consider studying abroad because of the numerous benefits such an experience provides. It is my hope this article helps students understand why they should embark on their own once-in-a-lifetime trip abroad. Contrary to common belief, studying abroad can actually be done in an incredibly affordable way. Nearly all universities in the United States have partner programs abroad. USU has over thirty of these direct partnerships, which include agreements with schools among the best in their respective nations, like Waseda University and National TaiLAST SEMESTER,
wan University. These programs allow students at USU to study at a partner university while paying their USU tuition rates. Sure, there is a study abroad fee and travel costs, but both the Office
of Global Engagement and individual colleges at USU offer many scholarships that help to alleviate this burden. While there are certainly many people who
15
pay thousands of dollars to go abroad, it doesn’t have to be this way. Studying abroad is reasonably priced if you do it correctly. Many of the benefits of studying abroad are self-evident. At its heart, it’s an adventure. It’s a time of great freedom. For many individuals, studying abroad is a rare opportunity to rid themselves of everything familiar and leap into the unknown. Studying abroad is as close as one can get to true freedom in the modern world. You too can have a potentially life-changing opportunity. Take a leap of faith and go into the Office of Global Engagement to see what your options are; the world is your oyster.

The center helps individuals with disabilities overcome barriers that could otherwise limit their academic, professional, and personal potential. These barriers may be architectural, attitudinal, or related to University programs. The DRC serves students with any physical or mental health condition that limits a major life activity. Examples include, but are not limited to, learning disabilities, ADHD, depression, anxiety, autism, chronic health conditions, head injuries, hearing loss, and low vision. If you have, or suspect you may have, a physical, mental health, or learning disability that may require accommodations, we are here to assist you. To get started, submit an application located
on the DRC website, www.usu.edu/drc. After submitting your application, call the DRC (435-797-2444) or come into the office (University Inn, 101) to schedule an initial appointment with an Accessibility Consultant. During an initial visit with an Accessibility Consultant, you will discuss the educational barriers you are experiencing. If asked, you will need to provide documentation of your disability that meets our guidelines. If you do not have documentation, we can help you get it. You will then work with your Accessibility Consultant to identify and establish appropriate accommodations. Once you are eligible, you will request your accommodations each semester as needed. Services Available to Students: • Accommodated Testing • Accessible Print Materials • Notetakers • Interpreting, Transcribing, and Captioning • Transition Services • Assistive Technology •
Architectural Access • Early Registration • Housing Accommodations • Other less common accommodations

Be an
Upstander “Upstanding”
is a bystander intervention approach for the prevention of harmful situations, like sexual misconduct, drug and alcohol misuse, bias and discrimination, depression or suicidal thoughts, and interpersonal violence.
An Upstander
is a person who stands up to prevent harm to another.
An Upstander can intervene in four ways — the 4 Ds: Direct
Address the situation in the moment. Say or do something.
Distract
Interrupt the situation by causing a distraction. Change the subject of the conversation.
Delegate
Ask for help. Recruit friends to help remove someone from a situation.
Delay
Address the situation after it has happened. Talk to someone about their behavior later or report an incident to the university.
Report, Seek Support, and Access Resources • The Office of Equity provides education and training to the campus community, and support and resources (including a grievance process) to those impacted by sexual misconduct and discrimination. • You can report incidents of sexual misconduct (sexual harassment, sexual assault, relationship violence, and sex-based stalking) and discrimination at equity.usu.edu/report, 435.797.1266, or at Old Main Room 161. The Office of Equity can provide information about resources, supportive measures (e.g. academic accommodations, safety measures, etc.), reporting options, and filing a formal complaint. • More information is available at equity.usu.edu and sexualrespect.usu.edu.
