ACADEMIC HERALDRY

The history of academic heraldry reaches back into the early days of the university. A statute of 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates and Bachelors” of the University of Columbia wear gowns. When American colleges and universities decided to adopt some suitable system of academic apparel, it seemed best to agree on one that all might follow. From a conference of various institutions’ board representatives held at Columbia University in 1895 came a code of academic dress for higher learning institutions in the United States, which most adopted.

GOWNS

The academic gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed. Master’s degree gowns have an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The sleeve base hangs down in the traditional manner. The rear part of its oblong shape is square-cut, and the front part has an arc cut away. It is designed this way so it can be worn open or closed. The gown for the doctoral degree has bell-shaped sleeves and may be worn open or closed.

COLORS

For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctoral gowns, edging of hoods and tassels of caps, the colors associated with the different academic disciplines are as follows:

• Agriculture, Maize

• Arts, Brown

• Business, Drab

• Education and Human Services, Light Blue

• Engineering, Orange

• Humanities and Social Sciences, White

HOODS

• Natural Resources, Russet

• Science, Gold-Yellow

• School of Graduate Studies, Black

• Associate Degrees, Black

• Integrated Studies, Black

Academic hoods are worn by recipients of advanced degrees. Master’s degree hoods are three-and-one-half feet in length and lined with the official color(s) of the college or university conferring the degree, which at Utah State University are navy blue and white, displayed in the heraldic chevron. The doctoral hood consists of a larger and longer assemblage of institutional color draped over the recipient’s shoulders, falling well down the back. The binding or edging of the hoods is of velvet or velveteen, three inches wide for the master’s degree and five inches wide for the doctoral degree.

CAPS

Academic caps come in two forms: the traditional mortarboard (from Oxford) or square cap, and a soft cap that resembles an oversized beret (from Cambridge). The mortarboard used by Utah State University is worn with a tassel.

ACADEMIC PROCESSION

The commencement procession is composed of three divisions: (1) color guard, University President, Utah Board of Higher Education members, Board of Trustees, administrative officers and special guests; (2) the faculty; and (3) candidates for degrees.

JEFF SCOTT

OWNER OF MILLS CANYON FINANCIAL, & FORMER BOX ELDER COUNTY COMMISSIONER Commencement Speaker

Jeff Scott is no stranger to Utah State University or the Brigham City campus. Jeff's ties to his community run deep. Starting as an Eagle Scout Award winner and graduate from Bear River High School, Jeff has given back many hours of service and leadership through membership in the Brigham City Area Chamber of Commerce and also the Brigham City Rotary. In those two separate organizations he has served as a board member and president, as well as the treasurer for the Chamber. His investment in Box Elder County has been a constant and positive force in this region, including his eight years of serving as the Box Elder County Commissioner.

A true Aggie, Jeff graduated with honors from Utah State University with a bachelor's degree in business and Spanish. He continued this association for many years by serving on the Utah State University Brigham City Campus Advisory Board as a member and has served as chair. He is a strong advocate of our institution and the value it brings.

Jeff has been a leader in local business owning and operating Mill Canyon Financial, Inc., as a licensed Financial Advisor since 1992.

The Scott family has grown to four children and three grandchildren. He and his wonderful wife keep busy through church service, traveling, and somehow finding time for racquetball, tennis, pickleball, and running.

KATHLEEN MEJIA Student Speaker

Kathleen (Kathy) is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in social work. In 2021, she also completed an associate degree in criminal justice at Utah State University. Kathy is finishing up an internship at the Ogden Division of Child and Family Services and plans to officially join their team as a caseworker this summer. She was born in California, but has lived in Utah for most of her life. She graduated from Weber High School in 2019. Kathy is currently a domestic paralegal for a non-profit law firm in Ogden that provides free legal services to low income Utah residents. She hopes to continue her work in the community after graduation.

NANCY BAROWSKI Student Speaker

Nancy is graduating with a master’s degree in social work. She has family ties with Utah State University and feels that graduating from this institution is an honor. Nancy has had an exhilarating 30-year career in social work. She has spent the last 20-plus years working for the State of Utah in child welfare. Nancy had the unique experience of battling cancer while pursuing her master’s degree. After graduation, she plans to use her experience to build a program that intervenes with mental health services at the time someone is diagnosed with cancer or long-term terminal illnesses. Nancy and her husband Charles have two children, Belle and Mikey. She is grateful for their support during this journey. She is looking forward to the next chapter in her life.

USU LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

As a land-grant institution, Utah State University campuses and centers reside and operate on the territories of the eight tribes of Utah, who have been living, working, and residing on this land from time immemorial. These tribes are the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Indians, Navajo Nation, Ute Indian Tribe, Northwestern Band of Shoshone, Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, San Juan Southern Paiute, Skull Valley Band of Goshute, and White Mesa Band of the Ute Mountain Ute. We acknowledge these lands carry the stories of these Nations and their struggles for survival and identity. We recognize Elders past and present as peoples who have cared for, and continue to care for, the land. In offering this land acknowledgment, we affirm Indigenous self-governance history, experiences, and resiliency of the Native people who are still here today.
