of a Land-grant College carries heavy burdens, for he leads an Institution which is entrusted with complex and far-reaching responsibilities. In its course work, such a College must have breadth and depth, because it is charged by law to provide " a liberal and practical education" for young men and women preparing for many vocations and professions. But also, in its Agricultural Experiment Station and other research activities, it is obligated to push back the borders of darkness and help solve man's problems by adding to human knowledge. And third, a Land-grant College is responsible for disseminating knowledge to young and old in every corner of the state through the Cooperative Extension Service and related adult education activities. To such a position, a man must bring not only remarkable energy and administrative ability but uncommon breadth of knowledge and understanding. We feel confident that Dr. Daryl Chase has the qualities , gifts, education , and experience to satisfy the requirements of this exacting office . He has received a thorough education in leading institutions of higher learning, in which he proved himself a scholar of rare quality. He has written and published materials of distinguished historical and literary value . In his scope of interest he includes agriculture, industry and business as well as the other aspects of life for which the College prepares young people. As a Dean of Students and later as Director of the College of Southern Utah he proved himself an enterprising, resourceful leader with the courage of his convictions and the energy and persistence to carry out the plans which he and his associates formulated . He has other traits and abilities, notably his skill as a public speaker, which help fit him for the Presidency of the College. Mrs. Chase is a charming and intelligent wife and mother, and is, we are sure, a most helpful aid for her husband. Therefore we are convinced that Dr. Chase has outstanding qualifications for the position as leader of Utah State Agricultural College. PRESIDENT

Dr. Daryl Chase , new president of Utah State Agricultural College , comes to his position with a rich and varied background in edu cational leadership. President Chase grew up in rural Utah . His family operated a combination farm and livestock ranch in the Nephi area , and like other farm boys he spent most of his early summers in farm or livestock work . From 1920 to 1923 he served a mission in the Northern States for the L.D.S . Church . In 1927 he received a B.A . degree from the University of Utah . He pursued graduate work at the University of Chicago, earning his M.A. in 1933 and the Ph.D. in 1936. From 1934 to 1936 he taught business ethics at L.D.S. Business College, Salt Lake City . Then he went to Pocatello , Idaho to serve as director of the L.D .S. Institute at the University of Idaho, Southern Branch . After a year he was transferred to the University of Wyoming to serve as director of the Institute there , and in 1939 he was sent to the University of Arizona at Tucson to head the Institute at that school. He held this position until 1943 when he was chosen director of the Institute at Logan. In 1945 Dr. Chase was appointed Dean of Students at USAC. He later was given also the duties of coordinator of public relations. During his six years as a faculty member he served in various other capacities. He was chairman of the lyceum committee and was a moving force in the Cache Valley Civic Music association, which cooperates with the College lyceum. Dr. Chase served for years as a member of the professional relations and faculty welfare committee. He was chairman when the Code of 1948 was completed and adopted . As Dean of Students he helped the student association fashion the " TUB" or Temporary Union Building. In the meantime he and others were working out plans for the new Student Union. Dr . Chase was appointed director of the Branch Agricultural College in Cedar City in 1951. He proved to be an aggressive leader on that campus , enlarging the book collect ion , adding a dormitory , library , and auditorium , and making extensive improvements in the heating system and other campus facilities. The name of the institution was changed from Branch Agricultural College to College of Southern Utah . Dr. Chase was named pre sident of Utah State Agricultural College in November, 1954, to succeed Dr . Henry Aldous Dixon , who was elected to Congress as one of Utah's representatives.
