Faculties of the Various Colleges Candidates for Graduate Degrees Candidates for Baccalaureate Degrees DRESS

The wearing of academic costume by faculty and student participants at the time of Commencement Exercises has become traditional among universities. The colo r and pageantry of these occasions are designed to indicate the degree of academic achievement of those who actively participate in such exercises. In order for the audience to better appreciate and understand the significance attached to these ceremonial aspects of the program , the following information is pre sented. The significance of the costume is determined principally by the cut of the gown , the size and shape of the hood, and the color of the tassels on the cap. The BACHELOR'S gown is characterized by the long pointed sleeves. The gown worn by a MASTER has closed sleeves with the arc

of a circle near the bottom. The arm extends through the slit, giving the appearance of short sleeves. The hood consists of material similar to the gown and lined with the official academic color of the institution conferring the degree. If the institution has more than one color , the chev ron is used to display the second color . The DOCTOR'S gown has full, round and open sleeves with three bars of velvet on each sleeve . The velvet facing of the bars may be black or the color indicative of the degree. The hood consists of a larger and longer assemblage of institutional color draped over the recipient's shoulders and falling well down the back. The colors worn on the tassels signify the various colleges of the University from which a candidate is being graduated.

GERALD R. FORD In a time of grave national need following the resignation of the country's Vice President, the President of the United States nominated you to become Vice President of the United States. There followed in the United State Senate, the most searching examination ever given to the background, performance, character, stability and honor of a man put forward as a vice presidential candidate, one who may succeed to the highest office in the land . You, Gerald R. Ford, proved equal to this, one of the most uncompromising demands in the nation's history and were overw helmingly approved and supported. A natural leader of men, a superb athlete, a seeker after intellectual integrity, you were born in the nation's midland . You became a distinguished graduate of the Univen1ity of Michigan, and the Yale Law School. After 4 years' service to your country as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II, you returned to your home town, Grand Rapids , Michigan and entered into the practice of law. You were soon elected by your fellow citize ns to represent them in the United States House of Representatives. There you continued the leadership which has been your destiny. Your collegues in Congress called upon you for steadily increasing leadership, and in 1965 you were chosen Minority Leader. In that position of high responsibility you earned the respect and confidence of the members of both parties. For nine years you served as Minority Leader in the House of Representatives. During that time you discharged your duti es with highest ability and fidelity . Despite the incredible pressures a nd demands of the office, you won the undisputed reputation among your peers of being on the floor of the House or available to immediate call to the floor at all times; of being thoroughly prepared and ready to participate in the debate on the issues of the day; of maintaining a balance of mind and spirit which built confidence in your colleagues; of being unfailingly courteous and fair to your opponents in debate while putting your own views forward with vigor and high determination; of being continually solicitous of the needs of other members; of maintaining composure and stability in periods of great stress. You have added stature to the parliamentary system. You have given strength to the democratic process. For your significant service in the leadership of our Country, Utah State University very proudly confers upon you, Gerald R. Ford, the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws.

LAVELL MERL HENDERSON There are those among us who through their own personal character, perception, and example emerge as teachers of men. Today it is a priviledge to honor you, Dr. LaVell M. Henderson, a distinguished alumnus of Utah State University, in recognition of your exceptional career as an imaginative scientist, teacher, humanitarian and leader. As a scientist you have authored or co-authored well over one-hundred scientific papers describing your findings and those of your students. These reports, based on meticulously systematic research, have led us closer to understanding the metabolism of amino acids and proteins essential to life processes . Your remarkable conceptualization of the metabolism of the vitamin niacin and of the amino acids lysine, hydroxylysine, and tryptophan and your perceptive leadership resulted in your appointment to the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences. This board is concerned with 8

the nutritional health of all Americans and it was here that you contributed to the establishment and revision of the recommended guidelines on dietary allowances for Americans. You were honored by your colleagues in nutrition who presented you with the Borden Award. This award is given an nually in recognition of outstanding research in nutrition. You were recognized for meticulously elucidating the step-by-step conversio n of the amino acid tryptophan to the vitamin niacin in the mammalian system. Dr. Henderson, you are a masterful leader in both nutrition a nd biochemistry. Your administrative leadership is strong, perceptive and inspirational. You have personally been responsible for the concept, development, and promotion oi viable programs of research and teaching in biochemistry at Oklahoma State University and then repeating a similar performance at your present institution, the University of Minnesota. Your leadership is further exemplified by your attainment of the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Medical Services Corps. Certainly you are a compassionate and inspirational teacher. Few have the genuine love and concern of their fellow men that you have demonstrated as a teacher and friend of students. Your leadership and accomplishments thus far were presaged by your being valedictorian of your graduating class at Utah State University as a chemistry major just 35 years ago. It is truly a prestigious moment for Utah State University to again honor you and bestow upon you, LaVell M. Henderson, scientist, leader, and distinguished alumnus, the honorary degree of Doctor of Science.

You are one of those rare individuals who has not only contributed significantly to your major scientific field, but one who has reached beyond the boundaries of your discipline to adva nce the cause of mankind through your contributions to other fields of knowledge . You are one who has obtained the training and knowledge of a specialist yet maintained the uncommon talents of a generalist without sacrifice of quality . As such, your interests and expertise have included not only biophysics, but education, philosophy, psychology and humanities . The diversity of your scholarship is formidable. Since, 1957, you have been a visiting professor at the Salk Institute, Howard University, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute , Universite de Paris, and the Center for Advanced Study at Stanford University. Your concern for man's future and the cogency and breadth of your scholarship are attested to by your invitation to join the "Club of Rome," composed of the leading international scientific thinkers, in an attempt to look into the earth's complex problems in a way that communicates both the knowledge of the problem and its urgency to an educated person-a remarkable skill in this world of parochial feelings . Your recent literary contributions indicate your adeptness at projecting futuristic directions of a technological society and the concomitant behavioral science approach needed to alleviate social ills. For your contributions toward providing a fresh, integrative approach to contemporary problems of man and his environment, Utah State University is proud to confer upon you the honorary degree of Doctor of Psychology .

RAMPTON Presented at the opening ceremonies of the Utah State University Festival of the American West, August 6, 1973. Mrs. Rampton , Utah State is pleased to honor you on this occasion. It is fitting and proper that we do this because an early part of your life was spent in this Valley and your education was received in the public schools of this community, and your baccalaureate degree taken on this campus . Your father, Phillip Vincent Cardon, moved with his family to Logan in 1925. At that time he was named Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station . Quite a long time later when your father moved to Washington, you returned to Logan to graduate with the class of 1936. Your record as a student was distinguished and included participation in the Theatre Arts Program where you played featured roles in Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" and "The Merchant of Venice." Your formal education, we note, was completed at the University of Utah where you received your MA Degree in Anthropology . Married to a man dedicated to public servi ce, your personal life has become a matter of interest to the people of Utah. Countless newspaper art icles have reported your activity as a homemaker and as a public person. In this role you have emerged as an appropriate example of what is expected of people in public life. Your education and your experiences in Washington as secretary to a senior partner in a law firm have provided the training and the background necessary for you to conduct your private and public careers . But we cite you for the interest you have maintained in the identification, collection, and preservation of the things representative of Utah's past. Your earlier interests in World History and your training in Anthropology have made it possible for you to give more than enthusiastic support for historic programs in the State of Utah. Yours has been professional and gradual interest which has lent great support to the Utah State Historical Society and the Utah Heritage Foundation. Both of these organizations owe much of their achievements these past years to your interest and support. We note also your special efforts in behalf of the Antiquities Bill which passed the last State Legislature. That Bill provided for the appointment of a committee to identify and to protect archaeological sites in Utah. With all of your interest in history and the affairs of Utah, you have reared a family of three and you have performed your wifely obligations with consummate charm. For all of these reasons and for many unstated here, Utah State University bestows upon you the Honorary Doctor of Humanities Degree.

The first controlled experiments on irrigated farming were conducted at Utah Agricultural College during its first year, in 1890. This was to become an area of research and teaching in which this University would produce numerous outstanding scientists and would assume a world-wide leadership role . Today we honor you, Lorenzo A. Richards, as one of the most distinguished scientists in this large group of our alumni who have contributed so much to increasing and stabilizing the

world's supply of food and fiber. We honor you, Dr. Richards, because you have developed much of our scientific theory and many of our precision instruments for measuring and controlling moisture in soil. You have achieved world renown for your understanding of the problems and solutions of soil salinity. The handbook on controlling salinity in soils, produced under your direction, is known and consulted wherever irrigation is practiced. In water management your systems for the automatic control of irrigation have replaced guesswork with scientific accuracy . Publications of you and your associates are known and used as guides in irrigation agriculture throughout the world. You have nurtured and given vitality to the field of soil physics. In your extensive travels you have assisted scientists in many countries in the planning and conduct of research concerned with managing water on farms. And since water is the most universal limiting factor in crop production , the information and technology developed by you have been of vital importan ce in increasing food production in an increasingly hungry world . Evidence of the esteem in which your colleagues hold you was your election as President of the Soil Science Societ y of America and as President of the Amer ican Society of Agronomy . The fact that you have received an honorary doctorate degree from th e Technical Scientific Institute of Israel, and the Pre sident's Certificate of Merit are further evidence of the significance of your contributions to the welfare of people everywhere . For your great contributions to the science of irrigat ed agriculture, so significant in the attempt to allay the specter of world hunger, Utah State University is proud to confer upon you, Lorenzo A. Presented on the occasion of the inaugural concert of the new USU pipe organ, January 22, 1974. Alexander Schreiner, your life has been crowded with achievements and honors. Your remarkable talents and musical power have made you one of the most popular and esteemed organists of the day. As sincerity and warmheartedness swell from your music, so too does your artistry linger in the mind and heart. Yours has been a talent with a capacity to reach the human soul, a testament to the ability of music to inspire and instruct. Dr. Schreiner, yours has been a balanced life whose letters and whose music alike are at once refined and brilliant. You are an internationally recognized artist of long standing, a favorite of concert goers the world over who respond to your creative genuis. You have achieved a breadth and depth of expression that communicates itself to all. Yours isa talent deserving of the phrase "universal," for in it is something for everyone everywhere, for the child, for the adult, and for the less musically tutored, as well as for the most sophisticated taste . The music of Alexander Schreiner knows no boundaries. In recognition of your fifty years of service as organist for the Salt Lake Tabernacle and in acknowledgment of the source of strength and self-renewing wonder which your music provided to people throughout the world, Utah State University confers upon you the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts. 9
