Academic Heraldry

The history of academic heraldry reaches back into the early days of the univer­ sity. A statute of 1321 required that all "Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors" of the University of Coimbra wear gowns.

In England, in the fourteenth century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade "excess in apparel" and prescribed the wearing of a long gown, which may have been counted necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. Hoods were used to cover the head until later replaced by the skull cap and eventually by academic caps. Both Cambridge and Oxford have made academic dress a matter of univer­ sity control to the inclusion of even its minor details; and in Laudian days in Oxford, any tailor who changed the au­ thorized design "even by a nail's breadth" was punished by the vice-chan­ cellor of the University. When American colleges and universities desired to adopt some suitable system of academic ap­ parel, it seemed best to agree on a system which all might follow. Accordingly, there was held on May 16, 1895, at Co­ lumbia University, a conference of rep­ resentatives of the boards of various interested institutions. From that meet­ ing came a code of academic dress for the colleges and universities of the United States, which most institutions of higher learning have adopted.

Science Gold-Yellow School of Graduate Studies (EdD, PhD) Gold The white ribbon with the Greek Key on the robe of a graduate i identifies an nductee into Phi Kappa Phi, the National Scholastic Society. Those wearing silver collars are Mortar Board Senior Honor Society members, the National and Academic & Service Society. A gold braided cord draped over the cowl will distinguish a graduate of Honors.

Hoods Academic hoods are worn by recipients of advanced degrees. The master degree hoods are three-and-one-half feet in length and are lined with the official color or colors of the college or univer­ sity conferring the degree, which at Utah State University are navy blue and white, displayed in a heraldic chevron. The doctoral hood consists of a larger and longer assemblage of institutional color draped over the recipient's shoulders and falling well down the back. The binding or edging of the hoods is of velvet or velveteen, three inches wide and five inches wide for the masters and doctors degree, respectively.

Caps Gowns The academic gown for the bachelors degree has pointed sleeves and is de­ signed to be worn closed. The gown for the masters degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The sleeve base hangs down in the traditional manner. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has an arc cut away. The gown is so designed to be worn open or closed. The gown for the doctors degree has bell-shaped sleeves and may be worn open or closed.

Academic caps come in two forms: the traditional mortarboard (from Oxford), a square cap; and a soft cap which re­ sembles an oversized beret (the Cam­ bridge model). The mortarboard, used

by Utah State University, is worn with a tassel. Black tassels designate any de­ gree; colored tassels designate major field of learning, and gold tassels indicate doctors and governing officials of insti­ tutions.

Academic Procession The commencement procession origi­ nates at Old Main and the line of march extends out the new East Wing across the quad to the Library then north to the Spectrum. The procession is composed of three divisions: (1) color guard, Uni­ versity president, Regents and the Board of Trustees, administrative officers, and special guests; (2) the faculty; and (3) candidates for degrees, with candidates for advanced degrees in the lead and others in groups according to the de­ grees for which they are candidates. The procession will stop at the tunnel en­ trance to the Spectrum, the first two divisions dividing so that the candidates for graduation pass between them and enter the hall first.

Commencement Speaker Honorary Degree

has achievedinternationalsuccess in business; to that success he has addedachievements in philanthropy andpublic service that likewise overreach national boundaries. He is chairman and chief executive officer of the Huntsman Companies, including Huntsman Chemical Corporation, the largest privately heldchemical company in the nation, He oversees operations infifty-eight sites in sixteen countries with more than seven thousand employees, Mr. Huntsman's entrepreneurialgenius is legendary. Just this spring he purchased the worldwide petrochemical operations ofTexaco, Inc., nearly doubling the size of his family business. Hr. Huntsman has taken time from his business ventures to devote his genius and energy to other activities. He served under President Richard Nixon as special assistant to the president and White House staffsecretary before returning to his business ventures. â–Ą Mr. Huntsman is best knownfor his philanthropic causes. Victims ofdisasters around the globe, the homeless, the illand the underprivileged have been beneficiaries of the Huntsman largess. â–Ą Utah State University has shared in his generosity with funding for the David B. Haight Alumni Center, namedfor Mrs. Karen Huntsman'sfather,andforthe Huntsman Environmental ResearchCenterontheUSUcampus. For his contributions in industrialgrowth and in public service and his loving generosity to many causes, Utah State University confers on Jon M. Huntsman the honorary degree, DOCTOR OF HUMANITIES.

Gertrude B. Elion

received the 1988 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. □ Past president of the American Associa­ tion for Cancer Research, she has served as a Presidential appointee on the National Cancer Advisory Board. She has been honoredby election to membership in the NationalAcademy ofSciences, the Institute of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts andSciences, National Inventors Hall of Fame, National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Engineering andScience Hall of Fame. □ Professor Elion is credited with the synthesis and co-development of two of the first successful drugs for treatment of leukemia as wellas an agent to prevent the rejection of kidney transplants. She also played a major role in developing a treatmentforgout andfor thefirst selective antiviral agent against herpesvirus infections. □ At the Wellcome Research Laboratories she was senior research chemist and assistant to the research director, then head of the Department of Experimental Therapy. Since her retirement in 1983 she has been scientist emeritus with Burroughs Wellcome Company. She remains active in research andprofessional organizations. □ For her landmark contributions in science and medicine, Utah State University confers on Gertrude B. Elion the honorary degree, DOCTOR OF MEDICAL SCIENCE.

Honorary Degree

has been called the dean of turfgrass research and breeding programs in the UnitedStates. □ He has been the leader ofone of the world’s most extensive turfgrass breeding projectsfor the last three decades.

This selections comprise more commercially accepted varieties than those ofany other breeder in the world.

They have been used in the White House Lawn, the Rose Bowl and more than half the golf courses in the UnitedStates. □ He is afellow of the American Association for the Advancement ofScience and is listedin Who’s Who inAmerica and Who’s Who in the World. □ Dr. Funk holds bachelor's and master's degreesfrom Utah State University anda doctoratefrom Rutgers University, where he has been a faculty member since 1956. □ He is author or co-author of more than four-hundredforty-five scientific and technical publications, patents andplant variety protection certificates. □ Dr. Funk has been honored for his training of many graduate students and for his generosity in sharing credit. □ For distinguishedscientific achievement, stewardship over manygraduate students, dedica­ tion to service and exemplification of consistent, sustained service to humanity through science, Utah State University confers on Dr. C. Reed Funk the honorary degree, DOCTOR OFAGRICULTURE SCIENCES.

Honorary Degree

has had a distinguished career in both academic and commercial endeavors. □ He is chief executive officer of The Van Kampen Group, Inc., consulting in toxicologic pathology, regulatory affairs and management. From 1980 to 1993, Dr. Van Kampen was a director or chief executive officer of biotechnology companies in Minnesota, Florida and New York, □ A1961 graduate of Utah State University, he earned a veterinary medicine degree at Colorado State University and a PhD degree in comparative pathology at the University ofCalifornia, Davis. □ He was a research pathologistfor the U. S. Department ofAgriculture Poisonous Plant Research Laboratory in Logan, then vice president and director of research for Intermountain Laboratories in Salt Lake City. □ Returning to Utah State University as head of the Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences, he made significant changes in teaching and research programs. He is a member of a national advisory committee for veterinary medicine at Cornell University. He is listed in Who's Who in America and is afellow of the American College of Toxicologists. □ For his signal contributions in biotechnology, toxicology and business, UtahState University confers upon Dr. Kent R, Van Kampen the honorary degree,DOCTOR OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES.

Eldon J. Gardner Teaching Award Michael K. Christiansen excels in all aspects of college teaching. He created the entire curriculumfor the USU Guitar Program, authored all of the textbooks, and consistently demon­ strated outstanding teaching shills in the classroom. Indeed, he is one of those rare educators who could be referred to as a “master teacher." □ His outstanding curriculum in the expandingfield of Universityguitar programming is the envy of other music departments in the intermountain west. Twelve of the seventeen method books Professor Christiansen has published were written as textbooksfor his guitar program. His textbooks have, for the most part, been published by Mel Bay Publications, the largest and most respected publisher of guitar materi­ als. □ Professor Christiansen's classroom work. is exemplary. His student evaluations are consistently among the highest in the University. His classes are extremely popular among music majors as wellas non-majors and are alwaysfilled to capacity. □ His students have won top honors at state and regional competi­ tions, andhisguitar ensembles have developedan outstanding regionalreputation.

His graduates have become college educators, music studio teachers, professional performers and recording artists. Professor Christiansen has achieved an excellent national reputation for his performing. This spring, he has been invited to perform at the Manhattan School of Music, one of the most prestigious music schools in the world. This summer he will perform throughout the country in a series ofconcerts with his LightwoodDuo. His numerous recordings include those for television andfilms. For outstanding teaching, Utah State University is proud to present theEldonJ. GardnerTeaching Award to Michael K. Christiansen.

E. G. Peterson Extension Award Joseph W. Austin epitomizes the spirit and vigor of Extension Service in Utah. He is motivated by his love for people and his desire to help them find more joy and success in their lives. □ Now in this twentiethyear with USU Extension, he has spent the past nine years as department head of Extensions Southern District. He oversees extension programs in eighteen counties and works to build coalitions responsive to the needs of Southern Utah residents. In his leadership capacity, he had demanded excellence, but without intimidation. Colleagues say his approach has always been supportive, gentle and hind. One wrote: “There has been more than one occasion when I have realized - several days later -- that I had been firmly reproached, but it was done gently and carefully to improve my work and not to damage myfeelings or make mefeelpersonally threatened." □ For his soft-spoken guidance and boundless energy in service to Extension and the people ofUtah, Utah State University honors Joseph W. Austin with the 1994 E. G. Peterson Extension Award.

D. Wynne, Thorne, Research Award Wynn

R. Walker

Professor andDepartment Headof Biologicaland. Irrigation Engineering (BIE) has an international reputation as an expert in irrigation engineering, From 1980 to 1984 he led a team at Utah State University in the development of solutions to the complete set of hydrodynamic equations describing surface irrigation. The implications of this breakthrough were critical to the develop­ ment of "Surge Flow", a technology developedat USU that is now a major water conservation methodology. □ Beginning in 1984, Dr. Walker undertook an even larger researchprogram on “main system management" ofirrigation systems using the theoreticalmodels developedearlierfor surface irrigation. Dr. Walker has been instrumental in applying this technology to water projects all over the world. One example was the Lam Nam Oon Irrigation Project in Northeast Thailandwhere Dr. Walker’s improved technology wasfirst appliedandwon an award as the best irrigation project in an area which has hundreds of irrigation projects. More recently the technology has been applied, in Bolivia and Egypt. □ Though the Department is known internationally as perhaps the best in the world in irrigation, Dr. Walker and the faculty of the BIE Department have recently undertaken the challenging task of broadening the Department's research and teaching mission. Before 1993, the BIE Department was the Agricultural and Irrigation Engineering Department. Under Dr. Walker’s direction, the Department changed its name and emphasis to include the rapidly growing area of Biological Engineering, and developed liaisons among six departments on campus. It can be seen that Dr. Walker’s research experience and leadership will benefit many peoplefor years to come. □ Utah State is proud to award Wynn R, Walker the D. Wynne Thorne Research Award.

College of Agriculture

Larry A. Rupp

has been an effective and respected teacher since his appointment at USU in 1984. He has taught courses both on and off campus, advised undergraduate students and supervised those serving internships in industry. Dr. Rupp's teaching is well organized and includes presentations that come from having “first-hand" knowledge of the subject matter. His approach challenges students to think rather than tojust memorize. Always lookingfor ways to improve anddo things differently, Dr. Rupp wrote and received a U.S. Department of Agriculture Higher Education Challenge Grant that allowed him to form a team, which planned, prepared and taught a maintenance course over Ag Sat. Dr. Rupp likes students, and they like him. He has been a student club advisorfor more than nine years and has helped the students enhance and expand their education through trips and club projects. Dr. Rupp typifies all that isgood in college-level teaching. He is knowledgeable, enjoys teaching students and portrays a positive image for his department.

College, of Business

Dennis J. LaBonty

has been afaculty member ofthe Department ofBusiness Information Systems andEducation since 1990.

He likes teaching and it shows. He is a dedicated, conscientious and is committed to the students of USU. He is enthusiastic in the classroom and his caring attitude extends long after the class period ends. Dennis considers teaching a partnership where teachers and students work together. His leadership in the BISE department has been instrumental in developing and refining several new Computerized Business Presentation classes strengthening both the curriculum and the employability ofdepartmentgraduates. He is an innovative and creative teacher and received the 1993 Utah Business and Computer Education Association Action Award. He keeps his curriculum current in a dynamic discipline by inviting professionals from industry into his classes. Dennis has been awardedfive grants in the last five years to enhance technology in business and marketing education and he contributed to the development ofa state­ wide electronic bulletin boardfor Utah business and marketing educators. His interest in students, teaching, andprofessionalism have been recognized by students and colleagues as he was selected the 1992 BISE department Teacher of the Year.

College of Education

Deborah E. Hobbs

joined the Utah State Universityfaculty in 1990 after a distinguished career in public education and as adjunct instructor at several other universities. Her degreesfrom Auburn University and the University of Nebraska prepared her for a life-time of exceptional teaching abilities. Course evaluations at both undergraduate andgraduate levels are consistently outstanding. Dr. Hobbs,formerly National Director of the widely known and respected "TALENTS UNLIMITED" program for individuals of all ages, continues to instruct others in this area internationally. She also demonstrates a commitment to quality research andservice, however, she considers her students at USU to be herfirst responsibility. Her class presentations are creative and inviting to all students. Her personal attention to eachperson identifies her as an exemplary “teacher of teachers." Debbie is dedicated in assisting her students to develop their own talents andabilities inalifetime commitment to learning. Her warmth andgoodhumor, coupledwith standards of excellence qualifies her as a master teacher in the broadest sense.

College of Engineering

Thomas H. Fronk

joined thefaculty of the Mechanicaland Aerospace Engineering Department in 1990. Since that time he has excelled as a teacher of both graduate and undergraduate students. Probably the greatest attribute, however, is the enthusiasm that characterizes Dr. Fronk's presentations. Empathyfor the studentflours from him as he listens to the. myriad ofproblems, academic and personal and students sense he is one of those rare people who care and will not dismiss them or their difficulties, He has also shown a continued interest in the professional welfare of students beyond the classroom, He has encouraged and assisted students who presentedpapers at conferences such as the Utah Academy ofSciences, Arts, and Letters; USU Scholars Day; American Societyfor MechanicalEngineersfunctions; and the Engineering Geology and Geotechnical Engineering Twenty-ninth Symposium. Dr. Fronk is a man of high personal character who is truly committed to teaching excellence. As a role for aspiring students, he projects an image that many seek to emulate.

College of Family Life

Janet B. Anderson

joined the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences in 1990 after working for several years as a Registered Dietitian. Her leadership has been instrumental in developing the foodservice management component in USU's dietetics program. She continues to communicate with the foodservice community to insure that classroom experiences are relevant to the realworld. Her teaching assignment includes a large general education class with some four hundred students, mainly freshmen, and several upper division dieteticsclasses. Her innovation extends beyond the classroom-she arrangedsummer internships across the United States, from Yale to Berkeley, exposing USU dietetics students to different management techniques. Both admiredand respected by her students, Anderson consistently receives high evaluations.

She is recognized as having high standards for her students, who have successfully passed the national examination to become Registered Dietitians.

College of Natural Resources

Robert J. Lilieholm

joined the Department for Forest Resources at Utah State University in 1988. Since that time, he has filleda critical role in providing socialscience and economic expertise to students in the College of Natural Resources. Rob teaches a variety of courses, rangingfrom forest economics andglobalforestry, to a core class on natural resource management that is required ofallstudents in the College. He is an outstanding teacher, having effective organization andpresentation skills, as wellas a sincere desire to see his students learn andprogress. In recent years, Rob has leadan effort to expand the internationalcontent ofthe forest Resources curriculum by participating as a visitingfaculty member on a four-weekfield course on managed tropical ecosystems offered by the Organization for TropicalStudies in Costa Rica. Dr. Lilieholm is also active in research, graduate education, and outreach education. Dr. Lilieholm personifies effective teaching.

D. Andy Anderson

College ofScience

joined the faculty of the Department of Biology in 1983. He teaches a wide range of courses from, lower to upper division. AllofAndy's teaching is characterized by his commitment to helping the students learn, his caring attitude and a level of rigor that challenges his classes. In the words ofhis students, he makes them “part of a learning team ", has a “rare gift to make complex topics understandable" and is always available “well beyond his office hours." Andy's ability to bring current issues into the classroom and to renew himself by taking on new courses and revise existing ones inspires his students to challenge themselves in their academic pursuits. A great teacher cannot ask for a more satisfying reward.
