UTAH SYMPHONY 75 TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON
Celebrating Seventy-Five Years of Utah Symphony Seventy-five years ago the Utah State Symphony Orchestra, later renamed the Utah Symphony, performed its first concert in Salt Lake City and set out on a mission to maintain the highest standards of musical performance and promote world-class music and talent to the region. The symphony gained great notoriety and became recognized as a leading American ensemble largely through the efforts of Maurice Abravanel, its Music Director from 1947 to 1979. During his tenure, the symphony undertook four international tours and released over 100 recordings, including works by Brahms and Sibelius, the complete orchestral works of Tchaikovsky, as well as the first complete recordings of Gustav Mahler’s Symphonies by an American orchestra. Abravanel was dedicated to bringing great music to as many people as possible, and his legacy continues. Today, Utah Symphony | Utah Opera boasts one of the nation’s broadest music education programs performing over 240 free concerts per year for over 140,000 students, both in Abravanel Hall and schools throughout the state. The Utah Symphony is dedicated to continuing its legacy of excellence in live performance and to showcasing this powerful art form throughout the entire community and beyond. With an upcoming headlining concert at Carnegie Hall on the heels of completing a performance tour of Utah’s five National Parks under the baton of Maestro Thierry Fischer, the Utah Symphony continues to be one of the most engaged orchestras in the nation.
