Experience the extraordinary talent of Grammy-winning violinist Augustin Hadelich, “an intimate performer whose self-effacing quality allows the music to soar” (Los Angeles Times), as he performs Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. The program also features two of Richard Strauss’ orchestral showpieces, Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks.

26-year-old Dutch cellist Harriet Krijgh, “a shooting star on the classical music scene” (Westdeutsche Zeitung), makes her Utah Symphony debut with Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, considered the pinnacle of the instrument’s repertoire. Combine that with a contrasting first half of glittering French music, and you have the makings of a beautiful evening.

Can four notes change the world? Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 is one of the most recognizable pieces of music, and yet its most incredible accomplishment is that it still has the power to surprise. On the first half of the concert, Moldavian-Austrian violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, “one of classical music’s greatest risk takers” (Bachtrack), performs Schoenberg’s imaginative Violin Concerto.

Stephen Hough, “one of the finest pianists of the age” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch), returns to perform Rachmaninoff’s boldly romantic Piano Concerto No. 1. Preceding it is a newly discovered gem by the young Stravinsky, Funeral Song, composed and performed only once before becoming lost for over a century. It was written just before his first big success, the colorful, hugely imaginative score for the ballet The Firebird.

Try not to smile at the unparalleled genius of Mozart and Haydn on this program of Classical-era masterpieces. Haydn’s charming and unpredictable Symphony No. 99 shares the stage with two important works by Mozart, the surprisingly mature “Jeunehomme” concerto and Eine kleine Nachtmusik, a piece as popular as any in the repertoire.

Immerse yourself in Bernstein’s startling and still timely portrait of modern uncertainty, Symphony No. 2 “Age of Anxiety,” when pianist Conrad Tao, “a thoughtful artist and dynamic performer” (The New York Times), returns to Utah for a celebration of Bernstein’s 100th birthday. The program begins with Saint-Saëns’ bone-rattling Danse macabre and his precocious Symphony No. 1.

The program also features Saint-Saëns’ Symphony in A Major, written when the composer was just 15 years old, and Stravinsky’s most religious utterance, the Symphony of Psalms.

Join the Utah Symphony for a night of Russian highlights when pianist Conrad Tao returns to tackle Prokofiev’s incredibly athletic Piano Concerto No. 2 on a program that also features the Ukrainian-influenced 2nd Symphony of Tchaikovsky. No less dramatic, Franck’s darkly atmospheric Le chasseur maudit begins the concert with the tale of a count who defies the Sabbath to go hunting.

Romanian pianist Alexandra Dariescu makes her US orchestral debut with Grieg’s mighty Piano Concerto. The all-Scandinavian program opens with Nielsen’s tribute to the Greek sun-god Helios and concludes with Sibelius’ uplifting Symphony No. 2. The majestic last notes of this piece will ring well beyond the end of the concert.

Experience the fascinating juxtaposition of Shostakovich’s two Piano Concertos with Russian pianist Boris Giltburg, an artist whose “athletic, passionate playing [is] often balanced by tenderness [and] suppleness” (Concerto.net). The all-Shostakovich program concludes with the earth-shattering human and political pathos of his Symphony No. 10.

Our Masterworks Season concludes with the decadent melodic reveries of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2. Dubbed “the last leading man” by The New York Times, Tony-Award® winner Brian Stokes Mitchell has enjoyed a spectacular career that spans four decades of Broadway, television, film, and appearances from the Hollywood Bowl to Carnegie Hall and the White House. Come and celebrate the music of the season as he joins the Utah Symphony for a special night of holiday cheer, featuring classic carols and iconic Christmas hits.

The timeless elegance and romance of the golden age of Hollywood musicals will sweep you off your feet with song and dance standards inspired by Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly and “the queen of tap dancing” herself, Eleanor Powell. Experience one of the most honored performers of her generation at Abravanel Hall for a special performance with the Utah Symphony.

Elvis Presley single-handedly changed the course of American popular music with a hypnotic mix of blues, southern rock and country sounds.
