Word from the President

This Issue

The start of the year is exciting for everyone involved in the Dentistry program: For 24th Feb Dent CAMP! Shelly Beach the DMD1s, the excitement of commencing a challenging process. For the DMD2s that sweet relief of getting through a Barrier exam, balanced by the dread that the 1st Mar Welcome Drinks neuro block brings. For the BDent3s it’s the pressure of a clinic schedule, while for 15th Mar SUDA Harbour Cruise the BDent4s it’s counting down the days. Everyone has something to work hard towards. 21st Mar Interfac Sport Write up: The social calendar this year has been very successful, in particular the DMDs Touch throwing themselves into the social aspects of the course with great vigour. The ever Tennis popular Cruise, SUDA Drinks and RBC have allowed the years to mingle, relax and get Ultimate Frisbee to know one another. The second half of the year has some big ones also: Grand Dental Ball being the highlight. Studies have indicated that dentists are some of the 10th May Juniors vs Students classiest people in existence, and the Grand Dental Ball is a perfect opportunity to Soccer th show that. Get dressed up, appreciate how amazing all your classmates look, and 18 May Roland Bryant Cup make some memories. 8th Jul Showcasing Dent @ USyd It’s not all roses and puppies though, and we need to m ark the sad story of Dr Steven Naoum announcing that he is leaving the faculty. He’s heading to WA to be closer to 9th-‐14th Jul ADSA Convention his family, and allow the Perth Glory to continue to let him down in their home stadium. Anyone associated with the clinics knows how hard he works, his passion for the student body and how he will be missed. SUDA would like to extend thanks to 6/13/20th Sep Rugby him for his work, and wish him all the best. 27th Sep Dent Cocktail Night There is a very good chance that the majority of you reading this will walk out of 24th Nov Dentistry Graduation Ball Sydney University with a degree, but not all of you will get everything out of the course that you can. Make friends-‐ they become colleagues in the future. Make 27th Nov Cricket-‐ Jennings Shield memories with friends-‐ they become a network which can help you for the rest of your life. We will all be entering a small community of practitioners, and getting involved with the social/community/sporting events is the best way to solidify those connections within the group.

Looking Ahead

Dent Camp After a tough few weeks of realizing just what they've gotten themselves into, it was once again time for the First Years to make the trip up to Shelly Beach for Dent Camp 2013. By Friday evening, our fantastic kitchen staff was grilling up sausages faster than we could eat them, and the drinks started flowing. We made our way down to the beach shortly after where the drinks and good times continued late into the night. Saturday morning rolled around far too early for most, but the sun was shining and the beach was waiting so it was time to get out of our sandy, sweaty beds and start the day. Everybody had a great time at the beach throwing around the Frisbee, playing volleyball, swimming, and just relaxing in the sun. That afternoon we had the Mentoring Session with the upper year students, who gave advice on how best to handle the heavy DMD course load and then answered any questions the first years had about the program. This session helped us a ton last year, and we hope the first years felt the same way this year. Then it was back down to the beach to catch the last few rays of the day. After stuffing ourselves on way too m uch pizza on Saturday night, we implemented the “No Toga, No Drinks” policy. Needless to say the togas came out fairly quickly and the party got started. Congratulations to Poon-‐Yu, Minh-‐Thu, and Michael on their award-‐winning togas, earning them each a gift certificate to Westfield! Congratulations and enjoy guys! Once again we made our way down to the beach early (keeping security happy) and continued the shenanigans into the night. That is until the storm that was looming over us all weekend finally hit, and we had to run for our lives back to the cabins! On Sunday morning we got out of our now very wet, sandy, sweaty beds, had breakfast, packed up and got ready to leave. We hope everyone left with a bunch m ore friends than they came with, a better grasp of what to expect from the course, and some really good memories to last you through the tough times ahead. Thanks to everybody for coming out and sharing the weekend with us! We hope you enjoyed yourselves as m uch as we did and can’t wait for it all again next year!

Laura Raguine & Jon Mitchell (DMD 2)

SUDA Welcome drinks

Once again the SUDA Welcome Drinks went off with a bang, this time at the newly refurbished GT’s Hotel. It was a great opportunity for the new DMD and BOH first years to meet with students in older years and of course for old friends in the senior years to catch up after the summer break. Some recently departed faces also made an appearance and shared tales of finding jobs out in the real world away from SDH and Westmead. The beer flowed and the spring rolls were sprung, with the party going on well into the night. Special mention should be made of the celebrity appearance of A/Prof. Hans Zoellner who made the trek all the way in from the Westmead pathology labs to be there.

The great night out certainly set the standard for the big social events yet to come in 2013! Charlie Thompson (BDent 3)

SUDA Harbour Cruise A boat full of heroes and villains set sail from King St Wharf on the 15th of March, and although it may be hard to believe, beneath the masks, capes, and face paint were really dental students (and a few randoms who managed to smuggle aboard!). The 20 Ninja Turtles were delighted to discover that pizza was on the menu for dinner, and the 30 Sailor Moons were equally excited about the rockin’ dance floor! Although there were many great and creative costumes (with the SUDA president once again flaunting his stuff in a not-‐so-‐modest Frankenfurter outfit) there could only be one winner of the Best Costume contest; Xiao Jin of BDent3 took the title with his cheeky Hamburglar costume, and was eventually awarded a $50 Myer voucher his efforts. Whether it was a night to remember, or a night one struggled to remember, everyone had a blast, and we can’t wait for more maritime adventures again next year. (Special thanks to Michael Skilbeck for organising it all!) Alissa Lukomskyj (BDent 3)

the cricket competition, narrowly losing by a very small margin. Even with a hectic schedule there have always been a large crowd of spectators from their fellow 2nd years, with the vast majority of the year getting involved. The level of participation and support from DMD2 this year has been an unprecedented turnout in the faculties history, and have thus set a very high bar for the coming cohorts to follow. Asef Anwar (DMD 2)

This year in Interfaculty sports, Dentistry is currently sitting at 4th place amongst all the faculties at Sydney Uni. Usually represented by the 2nd years, they have participated in ALL of the sporting events thus far and were even champions of the Ultimate Frisbee leg of the series, the first win our faculties history to win an interfaculty sports event! DMD2 have always come up with full squads, who were all very willing and determined to participate. They came up short in the semi finals for touch footy and in

Juniors vs Seniors Indoor Soccer Match Something that has been missing is some friendly competition between the staff and the students. With Dr Naoum a soccer fanatic, an indoor soccer game was almost ready to go until his second child rudely interrupted the plans. Congratulations Dr Naoum! And all the best in Perth from now too, you will be missed! Despite the minor set back, the date was kept for what was supposed to be a friendly game between the junior students and the senior students of the faculty, but it sure did bring out the competitive nature out of everyone. The juniors team consisted of representatives from BOH1/DMD1/DMD2 while the seniors were made up of BOH2/BOH3/BDent3/BDent4 students. The standard was impressively high and fast paced with the game on edge. Some vocal spectators elevated the atmosphere on the sideline, which made the event all the more enjoyable by all involved. A Lionel Messi-‐esque goal from Eyleen Cheng of BDent3 looked to have secured the win for the seniors after making Naheed Janmohamed (DMD2) in goals look silly. Not long before the final whistle

though, Igor Milanovic (DMD1) scored from long range (easy with the massive head there big fella) to level the scores for the juniors and force the tie to a penalty shoot-‐out. It was a tight and nerve wracking shoot-‐out, with the Juniors finally winning 3-‐2 after Ihsan let in an easy save against DMD2’s Priyanka Ponna’s powerful? shot. Thanks to all those who played and also those who watched. It was thoroughly enjoyable and feedback is that everyone is wanting round 2! So keep an eye out for the second edition, hopefully with the staff vs students leg too. Ihsan Savran (BDent 3)

Have you been procrastinating and consuming copious quantities of cariogenic foods through baking? Some students have been showing off their baking prowess and potentially their sad affliction with teeth. Impressive nonetheless, check out Eyleen Cheng of BDent3’s efforts! Baked or made something impressive? Shoot us some pictures and we’ll share it with all the students in the next edition! -‐ isav5686@uni.sydney.edu.au

Roland Bryant Cup

Sydney. Orange. The much anticipated clash of NSW’s best (and only) dental schools came head to head on the 18th of May, 2013. Of course I am referring to the annual Roland Bryant Cup. The RBC is a best-‐of-‐five sports series which this year comprised of men's and women's soccer, mixed touch football, women's netball and men’s basketball. This was the 4th edition of the cup with CSU emerging victorious in the previous three years. Unfortunately for Sydney, CSU stormed to another victory picking up wins in the first four sports, with Sydney regaining some pride in the men's basketball at the end of the day. As competitive as the sports were, this weekend was about more than that. After each year the bond between CSU and Sydney grows that much more. New friendships and connections were made 6

with future colleagues. Special thanks goes out to CSU for hosting and planning the day. The event was a great success with all the students who travelled up to Orange enjoying the experience out on the sports field and out on the social scene, not to mention the enormous bonfire, a first for many of us city slickers Thanks also goes to the ADA who, without their support, we would not be able to put together such an event. 2013 was another fine edition to the RBC and here's hoping that next year Sydney can finally get that elusive victory. Showcasing Dentistry at USyd

On 8th July 2013 we had the privilege to display our exceptional facilities to a handful of eager young students who are interested in dentistry via The Big Picture program. The Big Picture program had selected 20 senior high school students from various schools in New South Wales based on academic merit, interest and a desire to prepare for professional education. Students were given a brief introductory lecture on dentistry and the structure of the dentistry program at Sydney. They were also given details on the admissions process, academic life, and student life.

The tour of the facilities began in the simulation clinic where students were shown the simulation pods, equipment, typodonts, and all of the required instruments and fixtures that make up our state of the art simulated clinical environment. The students were then taken to patient clinic where they were able to see standard workstation setup, how to handle patients, and proper infection control. Lastly the tour was taken to the prosthodontics lab. Students were shown tools used for prosthodontics, workstations, and a variety of removable prosthetic devices. The tour concluded with a question and answer session where students were able to ask DMD1 students a myriad of questions and gained a first hand insights into life as a dental student. We wish to have shed some light and spark additional interest in dentistry in these bright young individuals and hope to see them again as prospective dental students. *A special thanks to the volunteers and faculty who were able to come together and make this event such a success. -‐ Gurkhi Malhi (DMD 1) 8

ADSA Convention Adelaide 2013

Issue 1, 2013

From the 9th to the 13th of July, dental students from around the country congregated in Adelaide for the 2013 Australian Dental Students’ Association (ADSA) annual Convention. 15 Sydney University students headed over for a week filled w ith amazing guest lecturers and fantastic social events that showed off the best of what Adelaide had to offer.

During the day delegates hears from some of Adelaide’s finest academics, which included a lively debate between a specialists about the placement of Implants; a lecture on the use of Invisalign in orthodontics; and a talk on cutting edge research about the use of stem cells in dentistry. We also had some hands on activities in of Adelaide Uni’s brand new simulation clinic and a face painting anatomy workshop which was rather entertaining. The social events included the Meet and Greet on the first night where NSW came in at a respected second place in the boat races. Wednesday night saw delegates going on a pub crawl around Adelaide’s finest establishments. On Thursday afternoon delegates went on a wine tour around the Barossa Valley and in the evening there w as a casual jazz night by the Torrens River. Friday night saw delegates dressed up in their scariest outfits for the ‘undead’ party which was one of the craziest and best nights at convention. Saturday was the last day of convention with delegates dressing up in their finest outfits for the ‘fire and ice’ cocktail ball. It was a great way to finish off an awesome week of making new friends, learning about cutting edge technologies and experiencing a new University and City.

I’d also like to give a special shout out to the amazing Caroline Bowman (BDent4), the outgoing ADSA secretary for all her hard work throughout the year, and to our wonderful liaison officer Ihsan Savran (BDent3) for doing such a great job. And congratulations to the USyd students who are on the new ADSA committee, Audrey Irish (DMD2) as President, James Tran (BDent3) as the Website Officer and Darian Karunaikumar (DMD1)as the liaison officer. I hope we can get more Sydney students at the 2014 ADSA convention up in the Gold Coast, it looks like it’s set to be one of the best yet! Audrey Irish (DMD 2) 10
