Moments

DEFINING

2019 Chancellor’s Annual Report

A MESSAGE FROM THE

We each have specific moments in our lives that define who we are. For me, a few of these moments include living in the back of my grandparent’s grocery store and working in that store to serve the needs of our community; walking across the commencement stage as I accepted my diploma from the University of Tennessee; promising to love and care for Hollianne for the rest of our lives on our wedding day; Hollianne and I becoming parents for the first, second and third time; and most recently, accepting the position as chancellor of the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Personally, a few of my favorite memories from 2019 were the smaller moments on campus that you may not see in this report. Moments like hosting a weekly walk around the quadrangle with students to promote healthy lifestyles; running out of the tunnel with UT System Interim President Randy Boyd during the first home football game; dressing up as Elvis and Priscilla Presley with Hollianne to pass out candy for Halloween; and captaining the faculty and staff basketball team during the first annual Students vs. Faculty and Staff charity basketball game.

In the same way that these events have made me who I am today, 2019 was full of several exceptional moments that have defined who UT Martin is as a university and the hopes it has for future generations of Skyhawks. The legacy, purpose and impact of each event noted in the 2019 Annual Report encompasses the accomplishments of our alumni, students, campus and community and their effect on this great university.

It is the little memories along with the life-changing moments that make UT Martin so special for each of us who walks through the campus.

From the largest single bequest in UT Martin history of $22 million by Bill and Rosann Nunnelly to fund scholarships for students from rural Tennessee, to a senior volleyball player receiving the surprise of a lifetime after her mother and best friend traveled from Lithuania to see her play collegiately for the first time, to the loss of the Communications Building to make way for the Latimer Engineering and Science Building, 2019 was made up of hundreds of moments that made a positive impact not only on campus but also in the lives of every person UT Martin reaches.

2

Thank you for your support and dedication to our students and our future here at UT Martin! It is because of your contributions that we are able to continue creating moments like the ones detailed in this annual report for the UT Martin community. Please join me as we soar through UT Martin’s Defining Moments 2019 Annual Report.
