DAVE SERRANO HEAD COACH

SERRANO LEADS TEAM USA IN 2012

18

Fourth Season at Tennessee Overall Record: 373-228-1 (.620) Cerritos College, 1985 Trinity College & University, 2003

Entering his fourth season at the helm of the Tennessee Baseball Program, Head Coach Dave Serrano’s efforts to revitalize and return the Volunteers into a nationally elite competitor continue to hold strong. Along with renewing a sense of excitement and optimism among his players, staff and Volunteer Nation, Serrano has brought a winning atmosphere to Rocky Top and in 2014, he led Tennessee to its first SEC Tournament appearance since 2007 with a 31-23 record, the program’s best mark since 2010. Serrano’s energy and passion for the University of Tennessee, combined with his impeccable track record of success, made him the choice to become the 24th head coach of the Volunteer baseball program following a nationwide search after the 2010 campaign. A former UT assistant, he was officially welcomed back to the Big Orange family on June 15, 2011. Since his arrival, the baseball program has witnessed an improved emphasis on recruitment and development, with the head coach and his staff securing four consecutive Top-20 recruiting classes for Rocky Top since 2012. In four years, Serrano has brought Tennessee back into the ranks of a national Top-25 status and now looks to set his team’s sights on the postseason and beyond. The Orange and White’s first campaign under Serrano saw it record wins over half of the 2011 College World Series field, downing No. 16 Texas, No. 10 South Carolina, No. 4 Florida and Vanderbilt. The Vols roared out of the gates, winning their first seven games to get off to the then-second best start in school history. That 7-0 record also marked the best by any UT skipper to start his Tennessee managerial career, topping the previous record of 4-0 last attained over 100 years prior in 1911. Following his first season at Tennessee, Serrano was awarded the honor of serving as the head coach of the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. With the opportunity to coach elite college players from all parts of the country, he led the squad to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal win at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands. When Serrano returned for his second season on Rocky Top, the 2013 Volunteers featured one of the youngest teams in the nation with a NCAA-leading 18 true freshmen on the roster. Nevertheless, UT posted a series victory over No. 13 Kentucky and wins over No. 14 Arkansas and perennial power No. 20 Arizona State. In 2014, Serrano made Tennessee history and led the Vols to their best season start in program history, going 12-0 to start the year. The team stayed the course, jumping into Top 25 rankings for several weeks, to finish with a 31-23 record and make their first SEC Tournament appearance since 2007. A veteran of seven College World Series and one of just 12 coaches to lead two different programs to Omaha, Serrano entered his fourth season at Rocky Top with a career record of 366-223-1 (.621) in ten seasons as a Division I head coach. After leading UC Irvine to the 2007 CWS in his third year with the Anteaters, he moved on to Cal State Fullerton where he averaged 43.75 wins per season in his four seasons with the Titans, including an appearance in Omaha in 2009. Having returned to the site of his first Division I job, Serrano served two seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee from 1995-96, following seven years at Cerritos Junior College. His first taste of Omaha came as a Volunteer as he helped lead a Big Orange squad featuring all-time UT greats Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey to the College World Series for the first time in over four decades in 1995. During Serrano’s first stint in Knoxville, Tennessee posted an impressive 97- 36 (.729) record, including a school-record 54 wins in 1995. Serrano holds a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and University (2003). He and his wife, Tracy, have three sons, Kyle, Zach and Parker.

TWO PROGRAMS TO OMAHA Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano is one of only 12 coaches in NCAA history to lead two programs to the College World Series. Larry Cochell Cal State LA, Fullerton, Oklahoma Augie Garrido Fullerton, Texas Mike Gillespie USC, UC Irvine Andy Lopez Pepperdine, Florida, Arizona Paul Mainieri Notre Dame, LSU Pat McMahon Mississippi State, Florida Tom Petroff Rider, Northern Colorado Ron Polk Georgia Southern, Miss. Following his first season at Tennessee, Serrano was awarded the honor of serving as the head coach of the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team which he led to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands. After opening its training with 10 days in North Carolina where it played a selection of collegiate summer teams and participated in the second annual Prospect Classic with the USA Baseball 18U squad, Serrano then led the Collegiate National Team into uncharted territory as it became the first U.S. squad to travel to Cuba to take on its national team in 16 years. Despite playing a veteran Cuban squad which featured 12 players who have competed in the World Baseball Classic and four who have done so twice, the Collegiate National Team proved its mettle by bookending the five-game series at Latin American Stadium in Havana with victories. That series would continue in the Netherlands where they split two more decisions as the U.S. went 5-2 during Honkbal Week to claim the bronze.

Notes on the Vols... ABOUT LAST NIGHT

 After a back-and-forth offensive battle between Tennessee and East Tennessee State on Tuesday, the Volunteers used a two-run eighth inning and strong relief pitching to come out on top, 5-2, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.  Tennessee’s righthander Hunter Martin threw 5.0 innings in his first home start of the year, allowing no earned runs on three hits in the outing. The Vols then went to right-handed pitcher Steven Kane in the sixth. Despite allowing one run, Kane held the Bucs to three hits over his 2.0 innings of work to earn the win. Righty Andrew Lee, who began the evening in the designated hitter spot of UT’s lineup, then went to the mound in the eighth and got the save.  The eighth proved to be a big inning for the Vols, as Christin Stewart belted a solo home run over the right field wall to further UT’s lead to 4-2. The homer marked his third of the season and second in his last four games. In the next at-bat, Nathaniel Maggio hit a double down the right field line and moved to third on a wild pitch. Then, Andrew Lee roped an RBI-single into center field to score Maggio, giving Tennessee a 5-2 advantage.

VOLS ON THE SEC CHARTS

¢ Outfielder Vincent Jackson continues to lead the Vols for the second-straight week with a .405 average, which ranks 10th in the SEC. His .532 on-base percentage also stands as seventh-best among league leaders. ¢ Second baseman and Preseason All-SEC FirstTeam selection Nick Senzel has three triples over 11 games, tied for third-best in the league. ¢ Junior outfielder Christin Stewart currently leads the SEC in hit-by-pitch numbers with seven. ¢ Tennessee also has four players among SEC leaders for sacrifice bunts, with shortstop A.J. Simcox’s four sac bunts tied for fourth. Juniors Derek Lance, Jeff Moberg and senior Parker Wormsley are all tied for sixth with three sacrifice bunts.

WEEKEND WRAP UP

 Tennessee took two games of a three-game series against Grand Canyon University over the weekend at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.  In Game 1 on Friday, March 6, righthander Bret Marks had a career night against the Antelopes, firing 7.2 innings and collecting 12 strikeouts. His 12 strikeouts marked the first time for a Volunteer to reach 10-or-more strikeouts since Zack Godley did so with 13 against Texas A&M on May 16, 2013. Marks’ 12 were a part of a new team-high 16 strikeouts against 2015 opponents.  The Vols fell, 1-0, to the ‘Lopes on Saturday, March 7. Despite a quiet offense, lefty Drake Owenby went a career-long 8.0 innings, allowing just one run on four hits.  Right-handed sophomore Kyle Serrano threw 5.0 scoreless frames in the rubber match on Sunday, March 8, surrendering just one hit en route to a 7-1 Tennessee victory.  Junior shortstop A.J. Simcox led the Vols’ offense through three games against Grand Canyon, hitting .417 (5-for-12) with four RBI and two stolen bases.

A VOLUNTEER CAST

¢ Fourth year Head Coach Dave Serrano and the Vols return 19 total letterwinners, including all five positional starters, from a team that went 31-23 overall and 12-18 in the Southeastern Conference last season. ¢ Tennessee welcomes 16 newcomers to Rocky Top in 2015, including 12 freshmen, one redshirt sophomore, one graduate transfer and two junior college transfers.

VOLS PICKED 4TH IN SEC EAST

 The Tennessee Volunteers were predeicted to finish fourth in the SEC Eastern Division, as voted by the league’s 14 head coaches.  Tennessee, which has won six total SEC championships (3 regular season, 3 tournament), received 51 points.  With 11 first-place votes, the Vanderbilt Commodores were predicted to win the 2015 title. Florida (2) and LSU (1) were the other teams to receive first-place votes.

YOUTH MOVEMENT

 The Volunteers have witnessed six true freshmen make their debuts for UT in 2015, including outfielder Brodie Leftridge, infielder Brett Langhorne, catcher Benito Santiago and pitchers Zach Reid and Jacob Westphal. Lefty Zach Warren also started Tennessee’s rained-out game on Tuesday, March 3 against Middle Tennessee, resulting in a cancellation.  Redshirt freshman Andrew Plunkett has also made an impact through Tennessee’s first eight games, having started three games in the designated hitter spot of the order and blasting a two-run homer as part of a 12-10 victory over UC Irvine on Saturday, Feb. 28.

VOLUNTEER PRESEASON HONORS

 Junior outfielder Christin Stewart garnered major national attention this offseason, collecting four Preseason All-American nominations (Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Perfect Game, Baseball America and D1Baseball.com).  In February, Stewart was also named to USA Baseball’s Preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List, a list of the country’s Top 50 players as voted upon by USA Baseball, sponsored by Major League Baseball.  Tennessee junior shortstop A.J. Simcox, junior outfielder Christin Stewart and freshman righthanded pitcher Kyle Serrano were recognized as Top 50 players in their classes by Perfect Game prior to the start of the season.  The organization tabbed the highly-touted Serrano 10th on its list of sophomores. PG also tabbed the right-hander as the No. 16 draft prospect for the 2016 MLB Draft. Last season, Serrano also ranked as the No. 1 freshman in the SEC and the No. 4 freshman right-hander in the nation.  The Southeastern Conference announced its 2015 Preseason All-SEC teams, chosen by the 14 head baseball coaches within the league. Outfielder Christin Stewart received First Team honors, while 2014 Freshman All-American and All-SEC player Nick Senzel was selected as a Second Team Preseason All-SEC player.

NEWCOMER NEWS

 Tennessee’s roster boasts 10 true freshmen, two of which were ranked as Top 100 in their class by Perfect Game this offseason: catcher Benito Santiago and left-hander Zach Warren.  Of the Vols’ 10 true freshmen in 2015, two were drafted by Major League organizations following their senior year of high school: Benito Santiago (38th round, San Francisco) and Zach Warren (23rd round, Pittsburgh),  Two new Vols are joining the roster from junior colleges in 2014, including right-handed pitcher Steven Kane and infielder Jared Pruett.  Outfielder Chris Hall debuts in his first season on Rocky Top following an NAIA National Championship season with Cumberland University. In 2014, Hall served as Cumberland’s leadoff man and led the team for total times hit by a pitch (20).
