DAVE SERRANO HEAD COACH
SERRANO LEADS TEAM USA IN 2012

Fourth Season at Tennessee Overall Record: 373-229-1 (.620) Cerritos College, 1985 Trinity College & University, 2003
Entering his fourth season at the helm of the Tennessee Baseball Program, Head Coach Dave Serrano’s efforts to revitalize and return the Volunteers into a nationally elite competitor continue to hold strong. Along with renewing a sense of excitement and optimism among his players, staff and Volunteer Nation, Serrano has brought a winning atmosphere to Rocky Top and in 2014, he led Tennessee to its first SEC Tournament appearance since 2007 with a 31-23 record, the program’s best mark since 2010. Serrano’s energy and passion for the University of Tennessee, combined with his impeccable track record of success, made him the choice to become the 24th head coach of the Volunteer baseball program following a nationwide search after the 2010 campaign. A former UT assistant, he was officially welcomed back to the Big Orange family on June 15, 2011. Since his arrival, the baseball program has witnessed an improved emphasis on recruitment and development, with the head coach and his staff securing four consecutive Top-20 recruiting classes for Rocky Top since 2012. In four years, Serrano has brought Tennessee back into the ranks of a national Top-25 status and now looks to set his team’s sights on the postseason and beyond. The Orange and White’s first campaign under Serrano saw it record wins over half of the 2011 College World Series field, downing No. 16 Texas, No. 10 South Carolina, No. 4 Florida and Vanderbilt. The Vols roared out of the gates, winning their first seven games to get off to the then-second best start in school history. That 7-0 record also marked the best by any UT skipper to start his Tennessee managerial career, topping the previous record of 4-0 last attained over 100 years prior in 1911. Following his first season at Tennessee, Serrano was awarded the honor of serving as the head coach of the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. With the opportunity to coach elite college players from all parts of the country, he led the squad to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal win at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands. When Serrano returned for his second season on Rocky Top, the 2013 Volunteers featured one of the youngest teams in the nation with a NCAA-leading 18 true freshmen on the roster. Nevertheless, UT posted a series victory over No. 13 Kentucky and wins over No. 14 Arkansas and perennial power No. 20 Arizona State. In 2014, Serrano made Tennessee history and led the Vols to their best season start in program history, going 12-0 to start the year. The team stayed the course, jumping into Top 25 rankings for several weeks, to finish with a 31-23 record and make their first SEC Tournament appearance since 2007. A veteran of seven College World Series and one of just 12 coaches to lead two different programs to Omaha, Serrano entered his fourth season at Rocky Top with a career record of 366-223-1 (.621) in ten seasons as a Division I head coach. After leading UC Irvine to the 2007 CWS in his third year with the Anteaters, he moved on to Cal State Fullerton where he averaged 43.75 wins per season in his four seasons with the Titans, including an appearance in Omaha in 2009. Having returned to the site of his first Division I job, Serrano served two seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee from 1995-96, following seven years at Cerritos Junior College. His first taste of Omaha came as a Volunteer as he helped lead a Big Orange squad featuring all-time UT greats Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey to the College World Series for the first time in over four decades in 1995. During Serrano’s first stint in Knoxville, Tennessee posted an impressive 97- 36 (.729) record, including a school-record 54 wins in 1995. Serrano holds a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and University (2003). He and his wife, Tracy, have three sons, Kyle, Zach and Parker.

Following his first season at Tennessee, Serrano was awarded the honor of serving as the head coach of the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team which he led to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands. After opening its training with 10 days in North Carolina where it played a selection of collegiate summer teams and participated in the second annual Prospect Classic with the USA Baseball 18U squad, Serrano then led the Collegiate National Team into uncharted territory as it became the first U.S. squad to travel to Cuba to take on its national team in 16 years. Despite playing a veteran Cuban squad which featured 12 players who have competed in the World Baseball Classic and four who have done so twice, the Collegiate National Team proved its mettle by bookending the five-game series at Latin American Stadium in Havana with victories. That series would continue in the Netherlands where they split two more decisions as the U.S. went 5-2 during Honkbal Week to claim the bronze.

Notes on the Vols... ABOUT LAST YEAR VS. UF
The Volunteers went 1-2 in their last series vs. Florida from May 15-17, 2014, resulting in Tennessee earning a trip to the SEC Tournament. Tennessee entered the SEC Tournament with an overall record of 31-22, finishing 12-18 in conference play. Florida completed the regular season with a 37-19 overall worksheet, including a 21-9 mark in league action.
STARTING IT OFF RIGHT
¢ Tennessee’s pitching staff owns a collective 2.38 ERA, seventh-best in the league, while also ranking fourth with a .212 opposing batting average. ¢ Senior righty Bret Marks (1-1, 0.79) matches up against Gators sophomore Logan Shore (3-0, 0.00) in the Friday night opener (March 13) at 7 p.m. ET. - In his last start against Grand Canyon (March 6), Marks had a career night on the mound helping UT to a 4-1 victory. - Marks dealt 7.2 innings, allowing just one run and establishing a new career high with 12 strikeouts. His 12 strikeouts mark the first time for a Volunteer pitcher to reach 10-or-more strikeouts since Zack Godley did so with 13 against Texas A&M on May 16, 2013. - Marks also threw a career-high 7.2 innings in the outing, surrendering five hits to the Lopes. ¢ Junior lefthander Drake Owenby heads to the mound in Game 2 of the series against the Gators on Saturday, March 14 at 7 p.m. ET. - Owenby established a career-high 8.0 innings pitched (0ER) last weekend against Grand Canyon. It’s a lefty-vs.-lefty contest as Florida has named LHP A.J. Puk (3-1, 3.72) their Saturday starter. ¢ •Sophomore Kyle Serrano gets the starting nod for the series finale against the Gators in on Sunday, March 15 at 1 p.m. ET. - Entering competition this week, Serrano’s .115 opposing batters average ranked second in the league, just ahead of Florida’s Sunday starter Dane Dunning (.139).
VOLS ON THE SEC CHARTS
¢ Outfielder Vincent Jackson continues to lead the Vols for the second-straight week with a .400 average, which ranks T-9th in the SEC. His .526 on-base percentage also stands as T-7th among league leaders. ¢ Second baseman and Preseason All-SEC FirstTeam selection Nick Senzel has three triples over 11 games, tied for fourth-best in the league. ¢ Junior outfielder Christin Stewart currently leads the SEC in hit-by-pitch numbers with eight. ¢ Tennessee also has four players among SEC leaders for sacrifice bunts, with shortstop A.J. Simcox’s five sac bunts T-1st. Junior Jeff Moberg ranks seventh with four while Derek Lance and Parker Wormsley are all tied for eighth with three sacrifice bunts.
FLORIDA TIES
¢ The Volunteers have two Florida natives on their current roster in true freshmen Benito Santiaigo and Aaron Soto. ¢ Catcher Santiago attended Coral Springs Christian Academy in Pembroke Pines, Fla., where is was listed as the No. 2 catcher in the state of Florida and earned All-Broward County honors. ¢ Left-handed pitcher Soto was a two-year letterwinner and captain at powerhouse Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, Fla. He also earned All-Broward County honors and led his Mavericks to a Florida State Championship as a junior in 2013.
Tennessee’s righthander Hunter Martin threw 5.0 innings in his first home start of the year, allowing no earned runs on three hits in the outing. The Vols then went to right-handed pitcher Steven Kane in the sixth. Despite allowing one run, Kane held the Bucs to three hits over his 2.0 innings of work to earn the win. VOLUNTEER PRESEASON HONORS
Junior outfielder Christin Stewart garnered major national attention this offseason, collecting four Preseason All-American nominations (Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Perfect Game, Baseball America and D1Baseball.com). In February, Stewart was also named to USA Baseball’s Preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List, a list of the country’s Top 50 players as voted upon by USA Baseball, sponsored by Major League Baseball. Tennessee junior shortstop A.J. Simcox, junior outfielder Christin Stewart and freshman righthanded pitcher Kyle Serrano were recognized as Top 50 players in their classes by Perfect Game prior to the start of the season. The organization tabbed the highly-touted Serrano 10th on its list of sophomores. PG also tabbed the right-hander as the No. 16 draft prospect for the 2016 MLB Draft. Last season, Serrano also ranked as the No. 1 freshman in the SEC and the No. 4 freshman right-hander in the nation. The Southeastern Conference announced its 2015 Preseason All-SEC teams, chosen by the 14 head baseball coaches within the league. Outfielder Christin Stewart received First Team honors, while 2014 Freshman All-American and All-SEC player Nick Senzel was selected as a Second Team Preseason All-SEC player.

POSITION TRANSITIONS
The Volunteers’ pitching staff has witnessed a fluid shifting of roles in 2015, with several starters now serving in relief roles and vice versa. Junior lefty Drake Owenby has served as the Vols’ Saturday starter to start the 2015 season, while he led the team’s staff with five saves last season. Owenby has seven career saves for the Vols, which ranks T-9th for the most in school history. Fellow lefthander Andy Cox began this year as Tennessee’s go-to reliever, despite having led the Volunteers with 70 strikeouts as a member of the starting rotation in 2014. Cox is expected to work back into a starting role while recovering from an offseason setback. Second baseman Nick Senzel moves into his permenant home in the infield, having been UT’s primary designated hitter in 2014 as a true freshman. While working behind currently Detroit Tigers minor leaguer Will Maddox at second, Senzel managed a .315 average with 14 stolen bases and a .419 OBP, earning Freshman All-American and All-SEC honors. With the addition of freshman Brodie Leftridge, Tennessee has also experimented with outfield positional switches, putting Leftridge in center and junior Vincent Jackson in right field.
A BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD By recent Perfect Game reports, Tennessee’s 2015 signing class is now ranked 12th in the nation. Earlier this month, the Vols’ 2014-15 recruitment class was ranked 13th in the nation by Perfect Game. The previous season, Baseball America listed Tennessee’s 2013-14 class as No. 15 overall, while Serrano’s first recruitment class was ranked 20th overall by Baseball America in 2012: - 2015 Class: Ranked No. 12 - 2014 Class: Ranked No. 13 - 2013 Class: Ranked No. 12 - 2012 Class: Ranked No. 20
FIRST-YEAR PLAYER NEWS
Tennessee’s roster boasts 10 true freshmen, two of which were ranked as Top 100 in their class by Perfect Game this offseason: catcher Benito Santiago and left-hander Zach Warren. Of the Vols’ 10 true freshmen in 2015, two were drafted by Major League organizations following their senior year of high school: Benito Santiago (38th round, San Francisco) and Zach Warren (23rd round, Pittsburgh), Two new Vols are joining the roster from junior colleges in 2014, including right-handed pitcher Steven Kane and infielder Jared Pruett. Outfielder Chris Hall debuts in his first season on Rocky Top following an NAIA National Championship season with Cumberland University. In 2014, Hall served as Cumberland’s leadoff man and led the team for total times hit by a pitch (20).
A VOLUNTEER CAST
¢ Fourth year Head Coach Dave Serrano and the Vols return 19 total letterwinners, including all five positional starters, from a team that went 31-23 overall and 12-18 in the Southeastern Conference last season. ¢ Tennessee welcomes 16 newcomers to Rocky Top in 2015, including 12 freshmen, one redshirt sophomore, one graduate transfer and two junior college transfers.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
The Volunteers have witnessed six true freshmen make their debuts for UT in 2015, including outfielder Brodie Leftridge, infielder Brett Langhorne, catcher Benito Santiago and pitchers Zach Reid and Jacob Westphal. Lefty Zach Warren also made his first official collegiate start on Wednesday against Morehead State (ND). Redshirt freshman Andrew Plunkett has also made an impact through Tennessee’s first eight games, having started three games in the designated hitter spot of the order and blasting a tworun homer as part of a 12-10 victory over UC Irvine on Saturday, Feb. 28.
FATHER/SON-COACH/PLAYER DUOS With sophomore right-hander Kyle Serrano, who’s expected to start on Sunday, returning to join his father and Vols head coach Dave Serrano at UT, they remain just the third father/son-coach/ player duo in program history. Since 2012, Tennessee’s current batboys are also the sons of Associate Head Coach Greg Bergeron (Brooks), Assistant Coach Aric Thomas (Brett) and Head Coach Dave Serrano (Parker). Playing for his father during his freshman campaign last season, Kyle Serrano appeared in 19 games, including nine starts, and threw 4.0 scoreless innings in the Vols’ SEC Tournament game against Vanderbilt (May 22, 2014). From 2006-07, Tony Delmonico - another Farragut grad - played for his father and longtime Tennessee coach Rod Delmonico. An infielder, Tony hit .329 with 142 hits and 85 RBIs over his career. Rod Delmonico coached the Vols for 18 seasons (1990-2007), amassing 699 wins and three College World Series appearances. The program’s longest tenured coach at 18 seasons (1963-1981), Bill Wright coached his son Barry Wright from 1979-80. A designated hitter both seasons, Barry hit .280 with five home run and 15 RBIs in 1980.
