THE MONTANA GAME Saturday’s game is the first-ever meeting between Tennessee and Montana, as well as the Vols’ initial meeting against any member of the currently constructed Big Sky conference. The Sept. 3 contest also marks UT’s earliest season opener since 2008 (9/1 vs. UCLA) and earliest home opener since 2006 (9/2 vs. California). UT is 84-24-6 (.763) in season openers dating back to 1891. In the last 25 seasons, Tennessee
is 22-3-2 (.852) in season openers. Of those 27 games, 14 were played against teams not currently in a BCS conference, and the Vols are a perfect 14-0 in those contests. The Vols have been even more dominant in home openers, going 90-18-5 (.819) all-time in the first game at Neyland Stadium each season. Tennessee has won 16 consecutive home openers dating to the 1994 season.
Season Opener The Tennessee Vols begin their 115th season with a 6:07 p.m. kickoff at Neyland Stadium against the Montana Grizzlies. Saturday’s game marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Tennessee is 14-0 in home openers all-time vs. teams not currently in a BCS conference. The Vols are beginning the year against an FCS opponent for the second consecutive year and defeated UT Martin 50-0 in the 2010 season opener. Saturday’s game represents the second year in a row the Tennessee football season will open under the lights at Neyland Stadium and the 31st home opener at night at Neyland Stadium, including the first-ever night game on Sept. 16, 1972, a 28-21 win over No. 6 Penn State (UT was ranked No. 7). The Vols are 28-3 all-time in home openers at night. Tennessee is also opening in Knoxville for the third consecutive year. Tennessee is 84-24-6 (.763) all-time in season openers and 90-18-5 (.819) all-time in home openers. The Montana game begins the second season for Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley. The 2010 UT squad was 4-3 at home and 6-7 overall, including wins in the last four regular-season games and the last two played at Neyland Stadium.
A Tennessee Win Would... Improve the Vols to 85-24-6 (.765) in season openers and 91-18-5 (.820) in home openers all-time. Extend Tennessee’s regular-season winning streak to five games, dating back to a 50-14 win at Memphis on Nov. 6, 2010. Five games would mark the longest regular season winning streak for the Vols since they won their last five to end the regular season in 2007. Improve the all-time record for the Tennessee football program to 790-340-53 (.690). Extend the Vols’ home winning streak to three games. Give Tennessee its seventh consecutive win over an unranked Division I FBS opponent at home, dating back to a 45-19 win over Georgia on Oct. 10, 2009. Mark the 16th consecutive win for the Vols in season openers played in Knoxville, a streak that began with a 35-21 win over New Mexico on Sept. 6, 1986. It would also mark the 17th consecutive win in home openers. Improve UT to 9-5 in its last 14 non-SEC games, dating to a 35-3 win over UAB on Sept. 13, 2008.
See You in September
CONTACT INFO
The Vols are 56-22-2 in September over the last 21 seasons since 1990, but are 7-9 during the month over the last four years since 2007, including 2-2 marks each of the last two years and in 2007, plus a 1-3 September in 2008. A winning September would signal a return to a previous trend in which Tennessee posted winning records in the month in six consecutive years from 2001-06 and in 11 of 12 years from 1995-2006.

TENNESSEE FOOTBALL /// 2011 PRESEASON RELEASE
Next Saturday (Sept. 10), the Vols will host the Cincinnati Bearcats at Neyland Stadium. The two teams will play for the first time since 1992, a 40-0 Tennessee win in Knoxville. UT owns a 4-1 edge in the series, and all five games have been played in Knoxville (1904, 1919, 1941, 1942 and 1992). Tennessee is playing a member of the currently constructed BIG EAST for the first time since Sept. 28, 2002, when the Vols defeated Rutgers 35-14 in Knoxville. The Vols are 15-4 (.789) all-time against current BIG EAST members. Cincinnati’s 18 returning starters are tied for the second-most the Vols will face in 2011. Cincinnati appeared in BCS bowl games in two of the last three seasons, facing off against Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl following the 2008 season and Florida in the Sugar Bowl following the 2009 season.
The 2011 Opponents Tennessee is set to face six teams in the preseason Top 25 this season: Alabama (2 AP/2 Coaches), LSU (4/4), South Carolina (12/12), Arkansas (15/14), Georgia (19/22) and Florida (23/23) Eight of Tennessee’s opponents earned a bid to play in a bowl game last season: Florida (Outback), Georgia (Liberty), LSU (Cotton), Alabama (Capital One), South Carolina (Chick-fil-A), Middle Tennessee (GoDaddy.com), Arkansas (Sugar) and Kentucky (Compass). The three SEC West opponents on the Vols’ 2011 slate all finished in the top 12 last year: LSU (AP-8, Coaches-8), Alabama (AP-10, Coaches-11), and Arkansas (AP-12, Coaches-12), while South Carolina (AP-22, Coaches-22) is a fourth opponent that finished in the top 25 . 2010 Recap
Tennessee finished 6-7 in 2010, winning four consecutive games in November to earn a trip to the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl, a game in which the Vols lost, 30-27, in double overtime to North Carolina. The bowl berth was the 49th for the Tennessee program, tying the Vols with the Texas for the second-most all-time. NCAA Bowl Appearance Leaders Alabama 57 TENNESSEE 49 Texas 49 USC 48 Nebraska 47
Early Returns Tennessee received votes in both the preseason Associated Press (5 points) and USA Today Coaches’ polls (7 points). There are eight SEC schools currently ranked in the Top 25 in both polls: Alabama (2 AP/2 Coaches), LSU (4/4), South Carolina (12/12), Arkansas (15/14), Georgia (19/22), Mississippi State (20/20), Florida (22/23), and Auburn (23/19).
Starting Lineup
The projected starters on the depth chart for the Tennessee season opener
vs. Montana include seven returning offensive starters: QB Tyler Bray, TB Tauren Poole, FB Channing Fugate, LT Dallas Thomas, C James Stone, RG Zach Fulton, and RT Ja’Wuan James. Additionally, the Vols will likely open on defense with four returning starters: DT Malik Jackson, CB Marsalis Teague, FS Prentiss Waggner, and SS Brent Brewer.
New Faces
Against Montana, the Vols are slated to start two true freshmen at linebacker in Curt Maggitt (pronounced Muh-JITT) at the SAM and A.J. Johnson at the WILL. It is believed that Tennessee has not started a true freshman at any of the linebacker positions in the season opener since freshman eligibility was reinstated in 1972. LCB Justin Coleman is the first true freshman to start in the secondary in the season opener for the Vols since Eric Berry in 2007 at California. If Maggitt, Johnson, and Coleman all start as projected on Saturday, it would mark the first time the Vols have started three freshmen in the season opener since the 2005 opener vs. UAB, when Ramon Foster (LG), Robert Meachem (WR), and Britton Colquitt (P) all started. QB Tyler Bray is the first sophomore to start the season opener at quarterback for Tennessee since Erik Ainge in 2005. P Matt Darr is one of 10 freshmen in Division I FBS who are serving as the starting punter this season.

NFL Draft
Two members of the 2010 Tennessee Vols were selected in the NFL Draft: tight end Luke Stocker by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4th Rd., 104th pick), and wide receiver Denarius Moore by the Oakland Raiders (5th Rd., 148th pick). There are currently 44 former Vols on NFL rosters, covering 25 of the leagues’ 32 teams.
“Vol for Life transforms our young men into men of character, teaching values, human decency and life skills that will create lasting opportunity and happiness.” -Head Coach Derek Dooley Since coming to Knoxville, Vols head coach Derek Dooley created the Vol
For Life program, a comprehensive player enhancement program to develop to person outside of football. Former Vols defensive back Andre Lott is the Vol for Life Coordinator and works with UT’s football student-athletes to further their personal growth through the newly created program that centers on four areas: character education, life skills, character development and spiritual growth.

Four of sophomore wide receiver Justin Hunter’s
UT freshman-record seven touchdown receptions came from 30-plus yards while nine of his 16 catches went for 20 or more yards. Hunter’s 25.9 yards-percatch leads all returning SEC wideouts. His seven touchdown catches also tied him for the most among all NCAA FBS freshman receivers in 2010.
Start Streaks
Four Vols who started every game last year -Ja’Wuan James, Tauren Poole, Dallas Thomas and Prentiss Waggner -- are all tied for the Vols’ most consecutive starts with 13.

Second Season While head coach Derek Dooley enters his second season at UT, six of the Vols’ opponents have head coaches who will be in either their first or second seasons with their respective schools, including the Vols’ first four challengers: Montana (Robin Pflugrad/2nd season), Cincinnati (Butch Jones/2nd season), Florida (Will Muschamp/1st season), Buffalo (Jeff Quinn/2nd season), Vanderbilt (James Franklin/1st season) and Kentucky (Joker Phillips/2nd season). Of those opposing coaches, only UC’s Butch Jones has additional head coaching experience elsewhere.
Academic Excellence
There are seven members of the Tennessee football team who already have completed graduation requirements: Anthony Anderson, Nick Guess, Austin Johnson, Ben Martin, Tauren Poole, Shane Reveiz, and Daryl Vereen.
We’re Going Streaking!
Sophomore quarterback Tyler Bray threw for at least two touchdowns in each of the 2010 season’s final six games. With a pair of scoring tosses in the season opener vs. Montana, Bray can tie Peyton Manning’s UT record of consecutive games with two or more TDs. Manning accomplished the feat seven times between the 1997 Florida Citrus Bowl vs. Northwestern and the Vols’ matchup versus Alabama during the ‘97 season. Bray’s multi-TD string also tied with Auburn’s Cam Newton as the highest in the SEC last season. Bray’s six-game touchdown streak is also the longest active running in the SEC. O-Line Pride
After entering the 2010 season opener vs. UT Martin with three starts on the offensive line (all from Jarrod Shaw), a much more battle-tested frontfive will open 2011 for the Vols. Ja’Wuan James and Dallas Thomas each started all 13 games last season, while James Stone (eight starts), Darin Gooch (six), Zach Fulton (five) and JerQuari Schofield (five) bring additional experience. However, the projected offensive line starters including a junior in Thomas and four sophomores: LG Alex Bullard (transfer from Notre Dame), Stone, Fulton and James, have a combined 39 career starts. According to a survey of media relations contacts, that ties for the second-fewest nationally in Division I FBS with Southern Miss and behind only New Mexico (14). Chasing History
Senior tailback Tauren Poole’s SEC lead-tying six 100-yard rushing games in 2010 were the fourth most in UT single-season history. With four more 100-yard games, Poole will enter the top five chart for career 100-yard games. Last season, Poole became just the 15th tailback at Tennessee to top the 1,000-yard rushing threshold. He can become just the second UT tailback to do it twice by repeating his performance this season. Johnnie Jones is the only other Vol to rush for two 1,000-yard seasons, recording a 1,290-yard effort in 1984 and a 1,116-yard performance in 1983.

After being hired as Tennessee’s 22nd 2008-09 Louisiana Tech Head Coach/Athletic Director Tennessee Head Coach head football coach on January 15, 2010, 2010Dooley had less than three weeks to assemble his staff and put the finishing touches on his first of two consecutive recruiting classes ranked in the top 12 nationally. The momentum generated during those early weeks continued to build throughout the 2010 season, as Dooley piloted the Vols to a bowl game, redesigned the now under construction $40-million, state-of-the-art football training facility, established a new academic accountability system and developed the Vol For Life (VFL) comprehensive player support and character education program, a four-year curriculum that focuses on the often-overlooked personal growth of the student-athlete. This increased commitment to excellence in all facets of the program provided the framework that helped the Vols exceed expectations on the field in Dooley’s first season at the helm. Despite serving as the third head coach of the Tennessee football team in a 15-month period and competing roughly 15-20 scholarship players below the established scholarship limit of 85, Dooley led his first Vols squad to four consecutive November wins, an appearance in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl against North Carolina, and a 6-7 finish. Dooley was the head coach at Louisiana Tech during the 2007-09 seasons and also doubled as the school’s athletic director from 2008-09. As the head coach of the football team, Dooley’s tenure was highlighted by an 8-5 mark in 2008, including the school’s first postseason victory in 30 years at the Independence Bowl and only the third bowl game since 1989. Dooley played college football at Virginia, catching 41 passes for 604 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Cavaliers to three bowl appearances and the 1989 Atlantic Coast Derek Dooley enters his second season as UT’s head Conference championship and graduating in 1990. TENNESSEE FOOTBALL /// 2011 PRESEASON RELEASE
Tennessee only made one coaching staff change after the 2010 season. In February, the Vols named Peter Sirmon as linebackers coach and moved Lance Thompson to defensive line coach, replacing Chuck Smith. Among all coaching staffs in Division I FBS, the Vols rank 11th in total NFL experience (coaching or playing) with 32 years. The UT staff also ranks 9th in NFL coaching experience at 23 years. Both totals rank second in the SEC, trailing only Florida. In terms of individual NFL coaching experience, only five college coaches have more NFL coaching experience than Tennessee associate head coach/ receivers coach Charlie Baggett, who coached in the league for 13 seasons.

CAPACITY /// 102,455 The Best Just Got Better The Home of the Vols got a makeover, transforming one of college football’s meccas into an aesthetic masterpiece. The concrete walls that used to hold up the west side were replaced with brick. Below the press box, six new panels display some of the finest to ever don the Orange and White-- Al Wilson, Gen. Robert R. Neyland, Reggie White, Peyton Manning, Johnny Majors and Doug Atkins. Most noticeable from the outside are the approximately 700,000 bricks that totally transformed the look of the stadium’s north and west sides. Standing in the middle of that transformation is the majestic Gate 21 plaza area. Six lofty archways dominate the entrance, which doubles during the work week as a key campus transportation hub. No doubt the traffic on game days is just as hectic. Adjacent to the Gate 21 plaza is another change, the new amphitheater at the corner of Phillip Fulmer Way and Andy Holt Avenue. The Vol Network’s Kickoff Call-In Show takes place there, sporting spiffy new digs after spending years on a make-shift platform in front of a worn down hillside. Just inside Gate 21, the Tennessee Official Team Shop is open for business six days a week under management of the UT Bookstore. Four other souvenir locations are located throughout the stadium, including one in an exclusive new seating area.

It starts with the Vol Walk down to the stadium, and the energy just builds and builds until you run through the ‘T’ for kickoff.” -- Jerod Mayo, Former Vol and New England Patriots LB “I’ve been to LSU, Florida State and Texas and almost every place that could be considered one of the toughest places to play. But we went down to Knoxville for a night game, and that Tennessee crowd was the most impressive that I have ever faced. Neyland Stadium was just electric.” -- Bob Davie, ESPN game analyst and former Notre Dame head coach “It’s static noise. You can’t hear anything. You go up and down the line -- your wide receivers, your running backs, your tight ends -- nobody can hear. Nobody.” -- Nate Longshore, Former Cal quarterback (2006) “That night in Neyland Stadium -- with the Orange and Rocky Top -- that’s my favorite.” -- Lee Corso, ESPN College Gameday
The General The Proverbial, Perpetual Yardstick One of the greatest coaches in the history of the game of football, Gen. Robert Reese Neyland is still, and will most likely always be, the yardstick by which all Tennessee football coaches are measured. For 21 years, he led the Big Orange to win after win and championship after championship. His 173 wins, seven conference titles and four national championships set the bar at one of the nation’s finest football institutions. According to UT legend Gus Manning, no one summed up Neyland and his coaching ability better than Wallace Wade: “He could take his and beat yours or take yours and beat his.” -- Wallace Wade, Alabama and Duke head coach and Neyland rival.
Gen. Neyland’s Maxims of Football 1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win. 2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way -- SCORE. 3. If at first the game or the breaks go against you, don’t let up -- put on more steam. 4. Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game. 5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle -- for this is the WINNING EDGE. 6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made. 7. Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes.

SEC Instant Replay 2011 The Coaches’ Challenge The head coach may challenge the ruling of any reviewable play. He retains a challenge if his initial challenge is successful and thus results in a reversal by the replay official. The head coach will then have a single challenge that he may use anytime during the game if his team has not used all its timeouts. Thus a team may have a total of two challenges in the game, but only if the first results in a reversal of the on-field ruling.
The Source All reviewable video comes direct from either the television network broadcasting the game or other TV production facilities that meet established conference standards. The SEC has used instant replay since 2005.
The Plays Reviewable 1. Plays governed by Sideline, Goal Line, End Zone, and End Line: a. Scoring Plays, including the ball in possession of a runner breaking the plane of the goal line b. Runner/receiver in or out of bounds c. Recovery of loose ball in and out of bounds 2. Passing Plays: a. Pass ruled complete/ incomplete/ intercepted in the field of play and end zones b. Touching of a forward pass by a player or an official c. Illegal forward pass or illegal handing off beyond the line of scrimmage d. Illegal forward pass or illegal handing off after change of possession e. Forward or backward pass thrown from behind the line of scrimmage f. Quarterback (Passer) starts arm forward, ball comes loss and play is ruled incomplete (if ball is quickly recovered) g. Quarterback (Passer) throws incomplete swing pass that is close to being forward or backward, and pass is ruled forward (if ball is quickly recovered) 3. Miscellaneous: a. Runner ruled not down. b. Runner ruled down (when ball carrier is judged down by rule and the ball is fumbled, play may be reviewed if recovery of ball occurs in the immediate action following fumble and is prior to any official signaling ball is dead. Also reviewable when runner is ruled out of bounds near goal line.) c. Forward progress with respect to first down d. Touching of a kick e. Number of players on field f. Clock adjustments (in conjunction with reviewed plays) g. Fourth-down/try fumble plays h. Field Goal Attempts (only when ball is ruled below or above the crossbar, inside or outside the uprights when it is lower than the top of the uprights.)
i. The game clock expires at the end of a half. If at the end of the game, the time may be restored to the clock only if the score is tied or the team that would next snap the ball trails by eight points or fewer. Not Reviewable 1. Fighting participants 2. Off-sides/Encroachment 3. Pass interference 4. Roughing passer/kicker 5. Illegal formations 6. Taunting/Other unsportsmanlike conduct 7. Face mask 8. Taunting 9. Illegal blocks 10. Holding 11. Personal fouls
The Process Each SEC football stadium has a secured replay booth equipped with the HD Instant Replay system provided by XOS Digital. Three individuals work in the booth for the duration of the game: 1. Replay Official, 2. Communicator, 3. Technician. The Replay Official and the Communicator are selected and assigned by the Conference. A live HD video feed is sent directly to the replay booth from the TV truck. The Technician watches the feed on an input monitor while recording it into the XOS Digital Replay System. The Technician also marks the beginning of each play while the Communicator marks all incoming replays. Each play and subsequent replay then appears on a touch screen in front of the Replay Technician. As the Technician and the Communicator mark the incoming video, each view will appear as a small picture on the computer touch screen. At any time, the Replay Technician can touch the thumbnail and immediately send that play or replay to the Replay Official. With the Communicator’s assistance, the Replay Official can quickly jump between replays while playing back the video. All replay video navigation is done via a jog shuttle remote controlled by the Replay Official. All video is viewed on an HD monitor that sits in front of the Replay Official. The touch screen is only used to select the replays and to log specific play data in the event a call is overturned. While all plays are reviewed between the whistle and the beginning of the next play, the Replay Official can stop play on the field by using a pager system. Five onfield officials wear pagers. If play is stopped the Referee announces on the stadium PA microphone that play has been stopped so the previous play can be reviewed. The Referee then proceeds to the sideline headset, which provides direct communication to the Replay Official in the booth. Once the play has been reviewed, the Replay Official notifies the Referee, who then announces the decision on the stadium PA system. FOLLOW ON TWITTER @VOL_FOOTBALL /// WWW.UTSPORTS.COM
