SCOUTING SAMFORD ¢ Samford is coming off a strong 2011 season in which it went 14-6-2 with an NCAA Tournament appearance. ¢ The Bulldogs return 8 starters and 14 letterwinners from its 2011 squad, which also swept the Southern Conference regular season and tournament titles and had a program-best 9-0-2 mark in conference play. ¢ Samford has two major roles to fill in 2012. The
Bulldogs graduated leading scorer Sarah Wilkinson (eight goals, 16 points) and starting goalie Alyssa Whitehead (started every game, 0.82 GAA, 120 saves). ¢ The Bulldogs registered an 0-0 tie in their home exhibition against Georgia State on Aug. 9. They outshot GSU 14-4, but only four shots were on goal. Freshman Jessica Perry got the start in goal and was hardly tested, registering just one save.
THINGS TO KNOW R. WILKINSON, NAULT FIRST UT ALUMS TO MEDAL
¢ Tennessee alums Rhian Wilkinson and Marie-Eve Nault anchored fiesty Canadian national team’s back line during the 2012 London Olympics. After a thrilling semifinal game against the United States, Wilkinson, Nault and the Canadians earned bronze with a 1-0 win over France.
H. WILKINSON IS ON HER WAY!
¢ Incoming UT player Hannah Wilkinson was in the international spotlight as well this summer, representing New Zealand at the 2012 London Olympics. Wilkinson will be playing for New Zealand in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Japan from Aug. 19 through Sept. 8, but she’ll be sporting the Orange and White soon after!
BIG ORANGE OFFENSE
¢ From the spring through summer preseason practice, the Lady Vols have been hard at work adapting to Brian Pensky’s aggressive attack. With various drills on ball possession in crowded spaces and attacking styles to push the ball up the field fast, expect a high-octane UT strategy this fall and hopefully boatloads of goals!
EXPERIENCED TRIO OF TRANSERS
¢ Among Tennessee’s 11 newcomers are three experienced transfers in juniors Katie Lenz and CC Cobb and graduate student Ashlee Burt. All three
have been to the NCAA tournament with their previous schools. ¢ Lenz comes from a tough West Virginia team that qualified for the NCAAs last year and made it to the Sweet 16 in 2010. Cobb made the move up from Florida State, a team that went the the 2011 College Cup and the 2010 Elite Eight. Burt arrived in Knoxville this summer after a graduating from Miami, a team enjoyed its finest season in program history in 2011 with a trip to the NCAA Tournament’s second round. ¢ Cobb and Burt, both hailing from ACC schools, are no strangers to Pensky’s coaching style as their respective teams faced his Maryland teams every year.
TWO NEW WRINKLES OFF THE BAT
¢ Fans who knew the team well from last year should be able to spot at least two noticable differences in the first game. ¢ After Emily Shore graduated last spring, UT needed to find someone to take over the bulk of the set pieces. One of the leading candidates in training camp was senior midfielder Kylie Bono, so expect to see No. 8 making her way down the line for corner kicks! ¢ Another noticable difference should be the even more varied use of Tori Bailey. The junior midfielder/ back provided pesky defense for the Lady Vols’ back line last year. This season, the coaches decided that her quickness and superior dribbling skills would be best used all over the field. So, don’t be surprised to see Bailey going end-to-end!
