THE STORYLINES LAST WEEKEND

• Tennessee opened its 36th season of women’s tennis last weekend at the National Tennis Center in New York against No. 9 Virginia (L, 4-3) and No. 4 North Carolina (L, 5-2). • With senior Natalie Pluskota limited to doubles, Tennessee played with just five in the singles lineup during each match, leaving the Lady Vols shorthanded, causing each player to move up a spot and automatically giving up a point. • UT won the doubles point in both contests, taking a pair of matches against the Cavaliers and all three versus the Tar Heels.

SEEKING 600

• All-time, the program record rests at 599-356 (.627). The Lady Vols can reach the 600-win milestone with a victory this weekend.

y SCORING SYSTEM

HOME OPENERS

• Tennessee has been extremely successful in home openers under co-head coaches Mike Patrick and Sonia Hahn-Patrick, posting 13 wins in 14 tries (.929). Additionally, since Patrick arrived in 1988, the Lady Vols have gone 23-1 (.958) in their first match at home.

SCOUTING UC DAVIS

• Friday’s meeting will mark the first all-time between Tennessee and the Aggies. UC Davis opened up the season ranked 59th nationally, before moving up one spot to 58 in the most recent ITA poll (Jan. 24). UC Davis will mark the 106th school UT has played in its history. • UC Davis is 1-1 after blanking Northern Arizona, 7-0, and battling No. 19 Arizona State, 4-3.

New to the college game? All that matters is which team gets to four points first. In dual matches, teams first play a best-of-three doubles competition. Whichever team wins two of the three matches earns one point. Teams then play six singles matches, each worth one point. The team that takes four of the seven total available points wins the match. (Note: Doubles matches are eight-game pro sets. Singles matches are best-of-three sets.)

MORE NOTES: ITA KICK-OFF

• This weekend marks the fourth consecutive weekend in which the Lady Vols will compete in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. • Overall, Tennessee boasts a 5-1 record in ITA KickOff matches, its lone loss coming in 2009, a 2-5 setback to Miami (Fla.). • Since then, UT has won four consecutive ITA KickOff matches and has never lost an ITA Kick-Off contest in Knoxville.

SZEKELY’S START

• Junior Kata Szekely was the only Lady Vol to escape the season-opening weekend undefeated in both singles and doubles. • Szekely opened the season with the highestranked win of her career Saturday, defeating No. 30 Lindsey Hardenbergh, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (6). She then topped that feat with a straight-set (6-3, 6-2) victory over UNC’s No. 16 Lauren McHale.

DOUBLE THE PLEASURE, DOUBLE THE FUN

• Tennessee has been stellar in doubles action thus far, winning five of its six overall matches. The Lady Vols won the doubles point in each contest last weekend. The duos of Brynn Boren and Sarah Toti, and Kata Szekely and Joanna Henderson are both 2-0 in dual-match play. • The Boren-Toti combination is UT’s only mainstay from last fall, while the other two duos are playing together for the first time. Dating back to Nov. 11, Boren and Toti have matched their career-long winning streak together with five consecutive victories. They’ve done it against the best too, winning five of six matches in 2011-12 against ranked competition.

CAITLYN’S DEBUT

• Spending the fall rehabbing from shoulder surgery, Knoxville native Caitlyn Williams made her long-anticipated singles debut against Virginia. She knocked off No. 75 Erin Vierra, 6-1, 6-4.
