NOTING THE VOLUNTEERS The Tennessee baseball team went 2-2 on the week with a mid-week road victory over Lipscomb before dropping two of three at home to Ole Miss. The Volunteers are now 18-6 overall this season, including a 2-4 mark in SEC play. Senior third baseman Matt Duffy paved the way offensively, hitting .500 (7-for-14) with three doubles, a home run and three stolen bases. The Milton, Mass., native continues to lead the league with 28 RBIs and ranks second in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. On the mound, a pair of freshmen collected both of UT’s wins as Carter Watson moved to 4-1 on the season at Lipscomb and Nick Williams picked up his first collegiate win against Kentucky on Saturday. In the triumph over the Rebels on Friday, Tennessee junior closer Matt Ramsey collected his third save of the year by striking out the side in the ninth around two walks. The Knoxville native has now struck out 12 and allowed just one hit in 5.2 innings of work. With nine career saves, Ramsey moved into a tie for fifth all-time at UT with Rich Delucia (1983-86). For the season, he is averaging an astounding 19.06 strikeouts per nine innings. As a team, Tennessee was flawless in the field over the weekend, not making even a single error in the three games versus the Rebels. The Vols are now tied with Mississippi State for second in the SEC with a .975 fielding percentage, behind only Ole miss at .978. Tennessee will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday when it hosts a mid-week matchup against UNC Asheville at 7 p.m. Redshirt freshman Jon Reed (1-0, 4.50) will get the start for the Volunteers on the mound. From there, the Orange and White will hit the road for Gainesville, Fla., as it is slated for a three-game set against top-ranked Florida this weekend. The games on Friday and Saturday will be televised live on CSS from McKethan Stadium. SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS The Bulldogs (9-14) are coming off an emotional weekend as UNC Asheville won a series from defending Big South Conference champion Coastal Carolina for the first time in eight years. The Dogs bounced back from a 13-2 loss on Friday to win 3-2 on Saturday and then edged the Chanticleers, 7-6 in 12 innings on Sunday. The victory on Saturday snapped a 36-game Big South Conference winning streak for Coastal Carolina. The Asheville offense is paced by junior Jordan Lurie who is hitting at a .344 clip with five doubles and nine RBIs. The Bulldogs have just six home runs as a team, but both Patrick Koontz and Cody Buch have two each. Senior Danny Baatz has been the team's top threat on the basepaths with eigh of the squads 16 thefts. Lurie is second with four in four attempts. The Bulldogs picked up a 14-8 road win over North Carolina A&T on Tuesday before making the trek to Rocky Top. Following the mid-week showdown, Asheville will hit the road once again for a three-game set at Charleston Southern.

TODD RALEIGH

Turn up the VOLume

Fourth Season Western Carolina, 1991 Record at UT: 101-90 (.529) Career Record: 358-299 (.545) Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh is in his fourth season at Rocky Top after guiding his alma mater, Western Carolina, for eight seasons. While at UT, Raleigh has had 12 players drafted, including two in 2008 and five more in both 2009 and 2010, and two more sign free-agent contracts following the completion of their eligibility. Nine of those players were drafted in the top-20 rounds, highlighted by 2009 first-round selection Kentrail Davis. In 19 seasons as a collegiate coach, Raleigh has now produced a total of 45 MLB draft picks and 63 professional players. Under Raleigh's guidance, the Vols have steadily moved up in the NCAA RPI in each of the last three seasons, improving from 91 in 2008 to 58 in 2009 and 45 in 2010. Over the past two seasons, Raleigh’s squads have belted out 168 round-trippers (87 in 2009, 81 in 2010), good for the second-most prolific two-year period in school history. During his tenure in Cullowhee, Raleigh’s clubs won two regular-season Southern Conference championships, one Southern Conference tournament title, turned in five top-three league finishes and made a pair of NCAA Regional appearances—reaching the Regional final both times. His 2007 WCU team posted a winning record against teams in the top 35 of the RPI and earned a rare mid-major at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The Catamounts were touted by ESPN’s Kyle Peterson as featuring an “SEC-style offense.” In his 19 seasons as a collegiate assistant or head coach, Raleigh’s teams have finished third or better in their respective league 12 times (63 percent). Raleigh and his wife, Stephanie, have four children: Caleb John “Cal” (13), Emma Grace (11), Carley Elizabeth (4) and Todd Anthony “T” (1).

““There is not another person that puts higher expectations on myself and this program than I do,” UT Head Coach Todd Raleigh said. “There is no doubt in my mind that we have this program headed in the right direction, especially this season. Everyone is on the same page in terms of coming to work every single day with the mindset of getting better. In the long run, that is really the only thing we can control.” — Head Coach Todd Raleigh

“Since I got here in the fall of 2007, we have improved every aspect of this program, from the facilities, to the Academic Progress Rate to the NCAA RPI. The last piece of the puzzle is putting it all together on the field and getting to the postseason. Has it happened as fast as we would have liked? Most certainly not. I understand the expectations of our fans, and this may sound odd, but I like the fact that some of them aren’t too happy right now. I love that they expect greatness, just like I do. Have there been some extenuating circumstances that have slowed us down a little? Sure, but our goal from day one has been to build a program, not a team. I have no doubt that that stuff is in the past and we are moving forward. We are going to be a national power, no question about that. I am confident that we are headed TODD RALEIGH NOTES in the right direction and cannot wait to get this u The Vols have steadily moved up in the NCAA RPI in each of the last three seasons, improving from 91 in season started.” — Head Coach Todd Raleigh 2008 to 58 in 2009 and 45 in 2010. “Ash brings a lot of energy and great ideas to our staff, especially with his insight on base running. “We have been working on a lot of small ball stuff. We don't have as many power guys, so we have to get back to the basics. A lot of bunting, base running and just small ball stuff. It's not a traditional team like we have had in the past but we are getting use to it. Top to bottom, it's just a group of scrappy guys. We are going to score runs in many different ways and put pressure on the other team to make mistakes." — Senior First Baseman Josh Liles “Our attitude is one of high intensity. That is one thing that we have focused on in our practices and scrimmages this fall and leading up to the spring. The chemisty on this team is definitely improved over what it has been in the last couple of years. We have a close-knit group and a group of seniors to lead us. We've set the bar high from the very beginning. The SEC Tournament is a bare minimum." — Junior Catcher/Closer Matt Ramsey

NORFORK NOTABLES uHas at least one hit in all but two game this season. Opened the year with hits in eight straight contests before going on a career-high 12-game run, during which hit .560 (28-for-50) with 14 RBIs, nine doubles, a triple, one home run, eight walks and seven stolen bases. uHas 14 multi-hit games in 24 contests. uNeeds just five more hits to match his total for the entire 2010 campaign (47). uReached base safely in each of the first 21 games of the season. uHas been spectacular at getting on base to start off an inning, reaching safely in 21 of 39 leadoff opportunities for a stunning 53.8 percent success rate. uIs hitting .531 (17-for-32) with two outs and has a team-high 13 two-out RBIs this season. uJunior college transfer from Jackson State Community College. uHit .261 with three home runs, 25 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in his first season as a Vol. GRUVER SETTING THE TONE ON THE MOUND Junior starting pitcher Steven Gruver has done a fantastic job setting the tone for a UT pitching staff that looks much improved over recent years. In his first three starts alone, he led the Vols to a pair of shutouts before tossing a complete game in his fourth start. So far this year, he has struck out 45 and walked just six in 42.0 innings of work. He went six scoreless against Milwaukee on Opening Day before shutting down Canisius for seven frames on Feb. 26 when he posted a career-high 10 strikeouts. He has now pitched 6.0+ innings nine times in his career. In those nine games, he is 5-2 with a 2.18 ERA and 62 strikeouts to just 10 walks. GRUVER'S 2011 STATS

DUFFY PICKING UP RIGHT WHERE HE LEFT OFF After a slow start in 2010, his first at Tennessee, Matt Duffy picked up the pace at the end of the year, leading the Big Orange with a .348 batting average in SEC play. The transfer from Vermont has picked up right where he left off as he is currently hitting at a blistering .410 clip (34-for-83). A native of Milton, Mass.,

Duffy also has the most RBIs of any player in the SEC with 26, holds the team lead with five home runs and ranks second in the league in batting average, slugging percentage (.711) and on-base percentage (.545). He also tops the SEC with 10 HBPs. CATAPANO = WINNER Including his two seasons at North Carolina, Tennessee senior and Knoxville native Rob Catapano has started 15 collegiate games. The team he has started for has won all 15 contests, including all five of the games he started in 2010 for the Big Orange and all three of his starts so far this season. BENNETT OFF TO STRONG START After hitting 27 home runs as a senior at Farragut High School, UT freshman catcher/DH Ethan Bennett has wasted little time adjusting to the college game, as he is tied with Matt Duffy for the team high with four home runs and is hitting .327 (17-for-52) with 19 RBIs through his first 15 games at Rocky Top. After missing the first two weekends with a hamstring injury, Bennett exploded onto the scene with four home runs in three games. During that stretch, he hitting .583 (7-for-12) with 19 RBIs and six runs scored. Bennett's talent isn't limited to the baseball diamond though, as he is also an accomplished musician with the ability to play the guitar, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin and piano. VOLS OFF AND RUNNING Prior to the season, there was quite a bit of talk about Tennessee implementing a new, more aggressive baserunning philosophy. The Vols have walked-the-walk so far in 2011 as they have already recorded an SEC leading 60 stolen bases in the first 24 games of the season. By comparison, it took UT 46 games to reach that mark in 2010 and never got there in 2009 when it had just 39 thefts in 55 games. The new baserunning program was on full display on Feb. 27 against Canisius, when the Big Orange was a near-perfect 9-for-10 on the basepaths, including a pair of double steals and three thefts of third. The last time a Tennessee team had nine stolen bases in one game came against Morehead State on Feb. 8, 2003. UT had been successful in 20 straight stolen base attempts and 29 of 30 tries before having a runner thrown out on March 9. With 19 thefts, senior Khayyan Norfork is first in the league and has as many or more stolen bases than three different SEC teams (Auburn, S. Carolina, Alabama) by himself. Not far behind Norfork is speedy freshman Andrew Toles who has the third-most stolen bases in the SEC with 13 in 16 attempts. That already bests current Texas Ranger centerfielder Julio Borbon for

the fifth-most by a Tennessee freshman. SAVING THE DAY One of the most eye-popping stats for Tennessee this season has come from the back of the team's bullpen. After recording four saves over the course of the entire 2010 campaign, the Vols already have 10 saves in the first 24 games this season, with seven different pitchers doing the honors no less. Matt Ramsey has three and Zack Godley has two, while Nick Blount, T.J. Thornton, Levi Dean, Nick Williams and Drew Steckenrider each have one. With nine career saves, Ramsey is currently tied with Rich DeLucia (83-86) for the fifth most in Tennessee history. RALEIGH REACHES CENTURY MARK AT UT With a 7-3 road victory over Lipscomb on March 23, Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh collected his 100th win at Rocky Top. In his fourth season with the Vols, the UT skipper is now 101-90 (.529). Raleigh becomes just the fourth Tennessee coach to reach that mark in Knoxville, joining John Whited (145 wins/1982-87), Bill Wright (408/196381) and Rod Delmonico (699/1990-2007). SHUTOUT STREAK Prior to its 4-0 victory over Milwaukee on Opening Day (2/18), Tennessee's last shutout came on March 10, 2007, a span of three years, 11 months and eight days (209 games), when James Adkins and Ryne Simpson combined to blank Siena, 5-0, in Knoxville. It didn't take the Vols to pick up another shutout as they accomplished the feat once again just a week later against Canisius (2/25), also by a 4-0 score. UT picked up another on March 9 with a 14-0 blanking over New Orleans. Longest Time Between Shutouts 1. 209 games 3/10/07 (Siena) - 2/18/11 (Mlwaukee) Three years, 11 months, 8 days (1441 days) 2. 84 games 4/30/88 (Auburn) - 3/22/90 (Tusculum) 1 year, 10 months, 22 days (691 days)

NORFORK EXCELS ON OPENING DAY...AGAIN For the second straight season, Vol second baseman Khayyan Norfork opened the year with a bang. After going 4-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base in his UT debut against Xavier in 2010, Norfork kicked off the 2011 campaign with a 2-for4 effort, knocking in three of the team's four runs against Milwaukee in its 4-0 victory.
