WELCOME FROM THE OFFICE OF FRATERNITY & SORORITY LIFE Greetings UTA student and family, On behalf of the office of Student Organizations and Fraternity and Sorority Life we thank you for your interest in joining a fraternity or sorority here at The University of Texas at Arlington. Our genuine hope is that you are able to find an organization that offers you lifetime friendships, networking beyond your undergraduate days, and a place to call home. We are dedicated to assisting you through the recruitment process and beyond. Since 1968, fraternities and sororities have been deeply rooted in the fabric of UTA. These organizations began with humble beginnings as local groups which transitioned to national organizations and later into the UTA fraternity and sorority community. Today this community has grown to include 28 fraternities and sororities with over 800 members. Students come from all walks of life and discover the significance of these fraternal values-based organizations. The process to join a fraternity or sorority may seem overwhelming but we assure you that membership in one of our organizations is worth it. Finding your home in one of these organizations takes some exploration on your part. We encourage you to visit organizations' websites, social media, and meet the men and women of fraternity and sorority life at UTA. Making a decision to join an organization should be based on how you align with the organization's values and the current members that you would eventually call your lifelong friends. When joining an organization you are joining a network of current students and alumni. With these men and women UTA becomes your home. Our Fraternity and Sorority Life staff is committed to fostering a community that cares. We work with our fraternity and sorority community to uphold University policies and successfully manage risk according to their individual organization's risk management policies. We wish you good luck in your time and experience here at UTA, and if at any time you have questions please do not hesitate to reach out to our F&SL staff. You can find us in our office located in the Lower Level of the University Center (suite 160), or find us online at uta.edu/fsl. QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER HELPFUL HINTS FOR PARENTS AND FAMILIES THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND Take the time to find out about the organization(s) your student is interested in. Check out their local and (inter)national website. Be supportive of your student's choice to join a fraternity or sorority. If you have questions, call Fraternity & Sorority Life (F&SL). Encourage your student to attend leadership programs sponsored by the institution and the (inter)national organization. Know the financial costs. Determine who will pay and what limitations these expenses may impose. For many organizations, one-time (inter)national dues are paid during the first year, so expect the first year to be the most expensive. Know names and contact information of the F&SL staff, organization president, new member educator, big sister/brother, and organization advisor. Expect to see many new tshirts, photos, and organization paraphernalia. Encourage your student to get involved and take advantage of all the opportunities and resources on campus.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is recruitment? Rush? Intake? Recruitment/rush/intake is defined as any fraternity or sorority activity that seeks to add new members to a chapter. Some fraternal organizations host recruitment throughout the year, while others recruit during a specified time period each semester or year. Regardless of when it occurs, any organization activity that serves the purpose of adding new members to the chapter constitutes as recruitment and must be in compliance with organizational policies, institutional rules, and state laws. What are the benefits of joining? The benefits include connecting with like-minded individuals and developing a sense of belonging on campus, building leadership skills, support with academics, impacting the surrounding communities, and creating bonds that could last a lifetime. The fraternity and sorority experience is an excellent training ground for aspiring leaders. Many organizations facilitate tutoring programs, host study hours, and offer a variety of educational resources. Some offer scholarships and awards to celebrate members' success. When do students typically join? There is never a wrong time to join a fraternity or sorority. Many freshmen and transfer students will join during their first year. Alternatively, some organizations require that students have a UT Arlington minimum GPA and credit hours before joining. How will joining affect my student academically? Academic success is important to each fraternity and sorority. They organize study hours, schedule student success workshops, and encourage the use of faculty office hours. All organizations have a GPA requirement to remain a member in good standing. Although resources being provided by the organization and our office are easily accessible, it is also important for the student to understand time management. Joining a fraternity or sorority can be very beneficial but it is also time consuming with meetings, events, service, and social activities. Which fraternity or sorority is the best one to join? Each of our 28 organizations provides unique experiences, emphasizing values, community service, philanthropy, and leadership within the community. Who is the "best" is a personal choice and it should be based on where a student feels most at home. What does it mean to be a new member? The new member period is a time for students to bond with other new members and active members and learn about the organization's history and goals. Some new member classes elect officers, hold weekly meetings, organize study sessions, and plan activities.

Who is in charge of the fraternities and sororities? Students elect their own officers to manage the day-to-day operations of the organization. These officers are assisted by members serving on committees and alumni who serve as advisors to the officers and general chapter members. Each chapter is governed by its (inter)national headquarters and governing council on campus. Additionally, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life staff supports and advises the governing councils, chapter officers, and advisors.
UTA IS A COMMUNITY THAT CARES HAZING PREVENTION AND RISK EDUCATION RESPONSIBILITY There are online modules, workshops, and training sessions provided by the (inter)national organizations that prepare members to be responsible and make decisions in a manner that reflects their organizational values. In additional to (inter)national organizations' educational requirements, the Fraternity and Sorority Life office holds required training and advises chapters one-on-one on various topics.
INCIDENTS AND CONCERNS The safety and wellness of students is our priority. If you hear of incidents of hazing, sexual assault, alcohol abuse, injury, bias, or have a concern, please report them. A report can be filed anonymously through a variety of channels. WHAT IS HAZING? The University of Texas at Arlington defines hazing as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act, occurring on or off campus of an educational institution, by one person alone or acting with others, directed against a student, that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of pledging, being initiated to, affiliating with, holding office in, or maintaining membership in any university student organization, group, or team whose members are or include students at an educational institution.

The fact that a person consented or acquiesced in a hazing activity is not a defense under the law. If you are hazed you must, according to state law, report it to the Office of Community Standards at conduct@uta.edu or submit a F&SL Standards Incident Report. ARE YOU PREPARED? EXPECTATIONS OF MEMBERSHIP TIME COMMITMENT AND ACTIVE PARTICIPATION The time you will need to commit to a fraternity or sorority is easily related to adding classes to your schedule. Between new member education, chapter meetings, philanthropic/service events, and educational programs you may easily need to commit at least six hours a week to fully engage.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS Each fraternity and sorority has a minimum GPA and credit hour requirement that all members must meet each semester. The Fraternity and Sorority Life office has a 2.5 UTA cumulative GPA requirement to join an organization. If you are a first semester freshmen or transfer you are still eligible to join, however your high school or transfer GPA may be considered by individual organizations. As an active member, falling below the minimum GPA requirement could jeopardize your membership status in the organization. Fortunately, many organizations provide resources such as designated study hours and keeping a list of members' majors so you know who to contact if you are in need of a tutor.
FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS An important consideration in deciding to join a fraternity or sorority should be if you are able to meet the financial requirements of membership. Membership is most expensive the first semester you join due to many one-time fees. Many of the organizations have the ability to work with each member individually through payment plans to meet the financial obligations of membership. During the orientation and informational sessions, we encourage you to ask questions regarding finances.
GOOD QUESTIONS TO ASK EACH ORGANIZATION What kind of support does the chapter provide academically? Do members spend time together outside of meetings and mandatory events? What makes your chapter's brotherhood/sisterhood strong? What philanthropies do you support? What are the time commitments as a member of your organization? What are the financial commitments for a member of your organization? Do you have payment plans available if needed? What are the advantages of membership in your organization? What made your organization stand out to you? What leadership opportunities are available in your organization? How were you sure this was the right choice for you? What made you decide to join a fraternity/sorority in general?
YOU SHOULD ALSO CONSIDER...
08
What do you hope to gain from joining a fraternity or sorority? What concerns do you have about joining a fraternity or sorority? How does joining a fraternity or sorority fit into your priorities at UTA? How will you manage the time commitments of joining a fraternity or sorority? How will you meet your financial obligations of members? What resources are available? Members are expected to hold themselves to high standards or personal and moral conduct. What are the behavior expectations for members? Are you willing to meet that challenge? Will you be able to meet all obligations throughout your college career and post-graduation? How will you stay connected to your friends who don't join or who join other organizations/chapters? How do your family and friends feel about your decision to join? What expectations should a fraternity/sorority meet before you consider joining?
NETWORKING As a member of a fraternity or sorority, students are granted access to an international network of successful and connected individuals. These connections allow students to interact with alumni who have been through similar experiences and have succeeded in similar fields, and can lead to internships that may lead to full-time employment.
MEMBERSHIP FOR
A LIFETIME The friendships you make in
college will continue to grow well beyond your college years. Your brothers and sisters will always be by your side, and they will be an integral part of your life beyond UTA.
"My involvement in sorority life set me up for success in both graduate school, and my career, in many ways. My time management skills allow me to do my job in a fast-paced environment without feeling overwhelmed. My leadership skills give me the confidence to take charge when I need to lead crews in the field, and resolve issues as they arise."
ELIZABETH HAHN UTA GRADUATE, 2013
ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT As lifelong members of a fraternity or sorority, there are opportunities for you to remain active no matter where you live. These include interactions with collegiate chapters as advisors, involvement with alumni chapters, or with inter/national headquarters as a volunteer. You are always welcome, no matter how long it's been since you were involved. Alumni members also engage with UTA through events like Homecoming, coming together to celebrate their collegiate days.

"I feel like I’ve been able to step out of my shell and do things I’ve always wanted to do but never really had the courage to do so. Being a part of a fraternity or sorority organization isn’t comparable to any other. These are the people you go through the most with. The brothers or sisters you gain once you join will be the ones to never give up on you, never let you down, and will always help you back up if ever you may fall."
