Box ELDER COUNTY IN THE LAST HALF OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

'ox Elder entered a new era with the outbreak of World War II in 1941. The war impacted Box Elder County, in many ways, far more than it did most other Utah counties. The aftermath of the war left changes that were felt t h r o u g h o u t the remainder of the twentieth century. War broke across Asia and Europe at the end of the 1930s, and after the attack by Imperial Japan on the American navy at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, the United States was again at war. As with World War I, World War II brought financial benefits along with community challenges, new experiences, and, for some, great family and personal tragedy. This chapter will examine the impact of World War II on Box Elder C o u n t y and look at other major developments in the last fifty years.

Bushnell Hospital The first and largest war-spawned installation in Box Elder was the construction of an army hospital at the south end of Brigham City. As early as December 1941, local newspapers reported that
