THE TINTIC MINING DISTRICT

he Tintic Mining District, located in Juab and Utah Counties, has been one of the most important mining areas in Utah and a key to the economic development of Juab County. Production from Tintic mines, in fact, was an important factor in the economy of the entire state. According to A. Paul Mogensen, geologist and past resident of Tintic, total production in the district has been equal to that of Park City and second only to the wealth extracted from Bingham Canyon. By 1976, total production of base and precious metals from the district was estimated at 16,654,377 tonnes, with a value of $568,620,003 at the time of production. 1 Tintic has also been important for geologists and mining engineers, who have surveyed its mineral wealth and geologic formations. The district is k n o w n throughout the world.

Early Development Chief Tintic, a Ute sub-chief who resided with a small band of Indians in what is now the Tintic Valley, provided the name for this fabulously rich mining area. Tintic in the 1850s led resistence to the 95
