At the beginning of the 1894-95 school year, the local school board found they were short a teacher for the eighth grade. Many older students had returned to school for advanced instruction. Elizabeth Schofield Adams was now principal of the Central School and also taught the eighth grade. W.I. Brown was hired and placed in charge of the advanced students. At the end of the year Adams retired and Brown became principal. 46 Some of the students Brown had been teaching expressed an interest in having a high school in Nephi and he told them that he would be willing to teach them high school courses but they would have to gain the support of the townspeople in this endeavor. The matter was placed before the school board, who presented it to the people. The majority voted in favor of the proposal, and in 1899 Nephi High School became the third high school in the State of Utah. The graduating class of 1899 consisted of Elva Bailey, Claude Bryan, Frances Ellison, Will Latimer, Allen McPherson, Jane McPherson, Hattie Scott, Willard Sells, and Kate Wilson. On 11 May 1900, graduation exercises for Nephi High School were held at the Iuab LDS Stake Tabernacle. With the motto, "The End Crowns the Work," the
