On the 4th Horse racing took place just out of town about 4 or 5 miles, or as some expressed it, the After Conference. On the 7th the Relief Society met in a general monthly meeting. . . . T h e Relief S o c i e t y w h e a t w a s u s e d w h e n c r o p s failed; s o m e w a s s e n t t o S a n F r a n c i s c o after t h e e a r t h q u a k e in 1906, a n d s o m e w a s even s e n t t o C h i n a t o h e l p in t i m e s of f a m i n e t h e r e . Federal Prosecution of Polygamists After the Civil War, the issue of the Mormon church's practice of polygamy aroused increased attention from United States government officials and put the territory in a state of confusion. A series of increasingly strong anti-polygamy bills went before the U.S. Congress—the Morrill Act of 1862, the Cullom Act of 1870, the
